No Lock 442
When I got the email about a "sale" I resisted. I watched as the inventory on hand dropped to 1. Weakness overtook me. I hit the buy button on a no-lock 442. $339 plus free shipping. I really didn't need another carry piece.

Good price and a great light weight carry piece. You can't go wrong with that.

The price was the bait, being a no-lock was the hook. I think that it was a few dollars cheaper than my used 642 cost me and it has the lock.

Yes, you did. Can never have enough carry pieces. Wear/repair, placed into evidence (please not this!), the list goes on.
I remember an old gun magazine article directed at merchants listing the 4 reasons for retail purchases. "NEED" was at the very bottom of the list.
Enjoy that wonderful gun.

That's a great looking revolver for that price! From the photo, it looks like it doesn't have a blast shield installed. I thought I saw that, as a general rule of thumb, the blued Airweight's used scandium and also a blast shield as a result. My 360J, which I paid more for, used, than yours, has the shield.

The standard 442 is not a Scandium design and does not have the blast shield ("With the blast shield down, I can't even see!"). My 340 M&Ps are Scandium-framed and have the shield.

Hopefully TNZ71 won't yell at me for going off-topic! My 360J is the first alu revolver for me in many years. Is the whole blast-shield concept a big deal as far as longevity of the revolver? A tiny bit more off-topic - I've noticed that the rear cyl locking pin is digging quite a gouge into my 360 - noticeably more than my more-used Ruger LCR ...
Added: looked at the LCR again, in fact, there is no gouge on the LCR recoil shield. One small right spot can be seen. Looks like (speculation here) Ruger uses a different/harder coating/anodizing on the LCR.

Reason: Hopefully fixed grammar ... ;)

Congrats the fresh acquisition! The 442 was my first CCW gun. I've since bought an M&P 340 but, I can say it certainly isn't twice the gun compared to a 442 (even though S&W like to charge for like it is). Great price on that 442 and it will last you a life time.

Congratulations on getting a great gun at a great price! I'm thinking of buying a used 642 that I've seen listed at a gun store for $295, so I like the way you think!

Which is exactly why there is one on my 2017 target acquisitions list. For now, my preferred local shop can't quite hit that price point but he is still searching and trying. Yes, I could just have him transfer one in and give him the transfer fee alone... but I can wait.
Only sad part is that I could have had a "like-new" used one for a song (and I do mean really, really a song). Just another one that got away because I momentarily hesitated.

Nice! I have never seen a 442 for sale at a gun shop in my area and I don't know why. You would think the black finish would be equally if not more popular then the silver finish.

That's a good price. When I bought my 642-1 new six years ago I paid right around $400 shipped.

Agreed. I had one 642, until it broke about a year-and-a-half ago. S&W replaced it under warranty, but I was without a gun for a couple of months. I now have a second 642 (a no-dash) as a back-up.

About 18 months ago, I went into the LGS/range to be greeted by a sign reading "Smith & Wesson Factory Sale" with an arrow pointing at one of the classrooms. Lotsa S&Ws at pretty good prices with the 442s and 438s being marked $399.95. In between them, the 642-2s were marked $329.95, and the factory guys were saying how Eric had mis-marked them. Well, Eric wouldn't come down off the prices for the 442s or 438s, so I bought a 642-2. There was a $100.00 off store coupon in the box, so I got my 642-2 for $229.95 ($249.54 OTD!).
Yeah, I'm that guy.

Mine just falls in my jacket pocket every day. A perfect fit. I paid $355 a couple years back for my new no lock 442. You did very well. Enjoy!

I'm fairly new to the revolver game and had been holding out for a 640 as my next revolver, but this past Monday I came across a deal on a no lock 442 for $300. Guy bought it and it went right in his safe. Never carried or fired other than the test round at S&W. So this sounded like too good of a deal to pass up. Needless to say she's not a virgin anymore.
