6" 617 ND
Just left the LGS where I saw a 6" 617 no dash in darn near perfect condition.
Not a fan of the 6" part, but it was marked $725 + DROSS and tax, so I made an offer - $700 OTD.
Don't know and really don't care if there's a box or paperwork.
This price sound reasonable to you?
I'm in California, our prices are generally goofy due to the roster of "safe" handguns, so you don't see these too often.
They told me no way, no how, so I walked FWIW.
I can always go back.

No-dash 617s are in high demand these days and with each passing month, fewer nice ones remain available for purchase. Accordingly, I would suggest that if you really want it, buy it. It WILL appreciate in value so if and when you might come across the barrel length you prefer (now), you will likely be able to sell it for no less than you paid for it.

If it has the combat grips I'd go back and get it for asking price, the grips alone go for $250-300 if they are in great condition. I have a 617 no dash, silly accurate gun, great action, probably the finest stainless 22lr revolver ever made IMO.

If I buy it at their price I'll spend just north of $800.
$700 OTD is what I think it's worth or at least a reasonable deal, but $800 seems a bit high.
Target grips, 6 shot version.

Looking for a little help on this.
Anyone?
Would you go $800 on this deal?

I'm not much help twig but you mentioned target grips, I think most ND's had combats. Not a deal breaker but it would make a difference to most buyers.
ETA:
You mentioned not caring about box/docs but it does enhance the value IMO. If it's just the gun without original grips and you wanted it, I'd probably offer their asking price but they pay the tax, etc. And depending on how bad you wanted it, negotiate from there.

Even if you don't care about the box and paper work they still have value to the market place. Same goes for the original grips.
It's a detached mathematical calculation, not an emotional preference.
I'd ask for a $50 deduct for no box, and at least $150 if no Combats. They both represent value and money on the table.

Thanks for the help!
That was my thinking too.
I offered $700 OTD on a marked $725 + Dross and Tax which would be a bit more than $800.
K frame target grips, not combats, box and papers in question, but I doubt they are included.
I might go back and offer $750 OTD, see if they bite.
This is the only 617 I have ever seen in person, so it might be worth it to come up a bit - and it's a no dash.

I paid that much for a like new one with box etc a few years back. From what little I see about California prices, I would think their asking price is not terribly out of line and may even be a good deal. If it is like new, even better. And I live in Missouri!

Stole this one for $599 earlier this year. Gun shop didn't know what it had.
Here it is with a few other things on the way to a range trip.

I was cruising past a pawnshop in a town not far from me about a year ago and I popped in and found this one. 6"ND with factory combats. It needed a little work inside and out, but I got it for a smokin' price. If yours is in real good shape, it's probably easily worth $750-$800 in my area.

So...
I went back last evening, minutes before they closed and the guy that wouldn't negotiate with me was there. I talked to a friend that works there and asked that they pass on my desire to buy the 617 to the other owner.
I was told to come back in the morning and he'd be in and I could work with him.
I was parked in front when they opened up and walked in to find...
Someone had poached it.
Sometime between closing last night and opening this morning it had been sold.
Smells very fishy indeed.
In any event I am upset with myself for not buying it outright, but as prices jump all over, I asked for help on pricing and that, by my decision, delayed my action.

I feel you pain as I have missed a couple prime guns by waiting to see if the price could be negotiated.
Any 617 is worth owning, so don't focus on the no dash! I have an 8 3/8ths ND I bought new back in 1990 and a -6 4 inch purchased used in 2010, both are silly accurate and are permanent members of my shooting stable.

If you just want a 617, you could probably buy a brand new one for that price and be happy. I am happy with mine and it is also a 6".

Hmmm, could be. But there will be another.
At least now you have an idea what the value is on similar models in your area.

You know, I am one of those oddballs who does not like to dicker on price. If the asking price is something I can afford without feeling taken advantage of, I pay it. I will occasionally - in the case of cars, for example - remind the sales manager that I am paying their asking price and in return expect very good service in the future. That practice has never let me down. Once, in a case where there were no loaners cars available and something happened that I needed addressed quickly, a visit to the sales manager got me the keys to his company car.
I just feel as though I am insulting someone when I in effect tell them they are asking too much for their goods or services. In this case, trying to save $100 on a gun that you know will appreciate in the future kept you from owning something that it seems you genuinely would have liked to have. If not spending that extra C-note was more important, you took the right action.
If not, well...
Ed

Thanks Ed.
If you knew this LGS, you'd question the price too.
I bought a 65-5 Ladysmith with an action job by Mag-Na-Port, refinish by them, holster, speedloader, premium ammo etc, for $750 just a couple years back. It was bought "early" as it were.
Just one of many.
I knew the value and paid the extra.
617... didn't know the value, so I asked. Checked Gunbroker too.
Believe it or not, I also knew the margin the LGS was working with, so my offer was actually very good, but I was willing to pay asking price when I returned.
So, thanks for the input on not being a cheapskate.

You will think about that 617 ND often between now and the next time you see one.

Honestly, I wasn't actively seeking one, but I always check the used section of the LGS's.
I would have been very happy to get it and I feel a sense of loss of course, but in life there are wins and losses, so now I know their value and learned a lesson.
