Sold off a number of my Smith revolvers over the last year or two, paring down the collection and concentrating on a few select quality models. I did keep my 625 Model of 1989 5". I absolutely love that gun and it is staying. I've had a hankering for a 3" stable mate for the 5". Haven't been hunting too hard as I knew it would cost me. A recent thread on the 3" Big Bores sent me over the edge. Last week, I click on the Forum "Guns For Sale" section like a fool. Oh no, there it is!! 3" Model of 1989 with box and goodies. Not your everyday offering. I kicked it around a bit and came to the conclusion that you only live once and these gems aren't going to get any cheaper. Cost me it did but "I'll take it".

Thanks to member Flintsghost for the smooth transaction. Great communication and fast shipping. He tossed in a some extras that included a bag of auto rim brass and a pile of moon clips.

Gun arrived Wednesday but didn't have a chance to pick it up until this morning. While at the gun store they had a box of new old stock PMC auto rim 200 gr jacketed SWC. Grabbed those to shore up the auto rim brass pile. Rushed home and tore it down for the obligatory cleaning and lube. Gun is spot on. Trigger is smooooth as butter.

Grabbed a set of flat side combats from member DOTdsd334 to dress it up. Thanks Dan. Mandatory pic. A great match to my 5". It's only money.....life is good.

That 3" 625-3 is a beauty.Take good care of it and shoot it often.

I found an excellent condition 625-2 5" a while back with box,papers and tools at a fair price.It's the most accurate revolver I've ever owned and I've owned many.

I shoot mostly my 45 Auto Rim reloads in Starline Brass cases using a 200gr plated SWC over 4.0gr of Bullseye.An OAL of 1.235" works for this gun with this load.I'll use Federal GM Match LP primers until my supply is exhausted or replenished.

One can never have too many .45 cal Wheel Guns

Very nice 625 3". I saw that one for sale & I don't think you paid too much. You don't see them up for sale often. My 625-2 1988 model came with factory Combats but they were too large for my hands so I sold them. Those flat side combats look great are they any smaller than the other Combats?

Two most excellent 625's, and nice presentation. Spending fiat money on something like that is a winning formula.

Here's my 625-3, I'm not half the picture taker you are, Mike. Came in box with factory rubber and paperwork. I've been meaning to get a pair of Spegels for this one.

Those are a nice pair of 625's. I, too, am enamored of the 625 Smiths. My two are a Model of 1989 625-6 with 5" barrel and a 4" 625-8 Jerry Miculek Special. I have shot those a LOT! My target load is a Mihec molded #68 H&G 200 gr. SWC ahead of 4.0 grs. of Bullseye or equivalent.

The same bullet loaded to 1000 fps. (7.0-7.5 grs. of Unique) is a FINE field load.

My heavy bullet load is a NOE Lyman 452424 (250 gr. Keith) with 7.0-7.5 grs. of Unique. It is another fine field load (should take deer and hogs at reasonable ranges without issue).

The traditionalists will prefer the original combats. I have a large sized hand and the originals never worked. My pinky would always be on the bottom hump. The flat sides are smaller with correct spacing of the finger grooves. They are excellent for shooting. Usually priced a bit cheaper than the originals also.

As I've previously posted, Elmer Keith wrote that the .45ACP DA revolver concept was smart emergency engineering, and not practical engineering. This concept came about due to the shortage of 1911 pistols in WWI. 100 years have now elapsed, and IMO, I think it's wonderful engineering!

The .45 ACP revolvers are quite a blessing to people like me who are rather old and infirm. I enjoy shooting. 45 but not chasing valuable brass to reload. I had a 625 Model of 1988 that I bought in 1989. In my younger days, I didn't see the value of a big, heavy wheelgun that only held six rounds and required those abominable clips or the oddball auto rims to avoid plucking out hot brass. So, I traded it. I regretted that as the years passed and a few years ago, I traded into a 625 Model of 1989 4". So, my revolver splits the difference between 5" and 3". Since I don't use any of my N frames for concealed carry, the difference between 4" and 3" is nil in any practical sense for my needs...On the other hand, there is just something indefinable about a 3" N frame that makes them special. That is a fine looking gun and beautiful stocks on it. Maybe I could saw mine an inch shorter...Well, maybe not.

A few months ago, I referred to the "odd ball" revolver I had just purchased. It was "odd" to me because since the 1950's, I have had nothing but J, K, L, and N frames shooting .22, .22 mag., .38, .357, .44 spl., .44 mag., and .45 Colt.

The "odd ball" was a 625-2 Model of 1988 in .45 acp in 5 inch and my very first revolver in .45 acp.
Four sessions with it since have pushed it to the top of my favorite Smith revolvers, and believe me, I have handled and owned 100's of them. Recently, using my newly loaded .45 Auto Rim shells, this revolver either out-shot or kept up with my long barreled .45 Colts, .44 Specials, .44 mags, and .357's in accuracy.

Posting this gun here when I bought it, several said "You will LOVE it." I do !!!!

I saw this gun in my friend's pawn shop here in Western NC and kept asking him to pull it out so I could drool on it. I decided this "odd ball" was a great investment and certainly one of the most fun to shoot. I am told the grips are not original, but I would not have it any other way. Besides, the grips are worth at least a third of what I paid for the gun, near new in box.

Yes 3 inch guns are attractive but there are fewer 4 inches than there are either the 3 or 5 inch gun......we are in the minority.

I've done a lot of stupid moves in my life but one of the stupidest was selling that 5'' Model of 1989.If only I could have it back!!!

I have one of the original four inch 625-3's, bought new in 1990, if I remember right. It would be the last gun I would give up. Very accurate.
When growing up in Roseburg, OR in the 50's and early 60's, I remember seeing in gun shops a few 1917's with the barrels cut down to the end of the ejector rod lug and new front sights fitted. Made a pretty good big bore carry gun, I imagine.

I am a a huge fan of of 45acp revolvers, owning two 1917's (S&W and Colt), a 1950 (pre-26) and 1955 (pre-25). I really prefer the old ones for many reasons, and really never considered a 625 until one presented itself to me about a year ago. The price was really good so I took a flyer on it, knowing I'd be able to get my money out of it if it wasn't for me. It's a 625-2 (model of 1988), and it quickly became one of my favorites. It balances great in my hand and is very accurate. Those 3" models look great, and the 5" models make for great shooters. The 625 is a great addition to any collection.
