Default BIG N frame grips

Hey,

So I have a N frame smith model 29, and I wanted to get some big target grips for it... the factory grips are really small and thin, and I was looking for something like the BIG hand filling target grips. Most of the grips I see are 150+ bucks. Are there any that are fat target grips like the old ones smith used to make? Any recommendations? Thanks

A company named Mustang used to make very large wood stocks for N frames, and another type is called the Jordan Trooper. If you have a round butt grip frame be sure the stocks you are looking at will fit your gun.

My N frame is a new one. 29-10. Square butt, and I believe old square butt grips will fit it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If is has a SB frame, any vintage Target stocks should fit.

I only saw pairs that were 150+ bucks. I checked on Fleabay and saw a set of SW factory target grips for 59 bucks and grabbed them. Stamped 1991. They're on the way! it should tame the factory grips on my 29-10 with full house loads...

Congrats on the 29! I have a 25-15 (45 Colt) that had the same issue. I replaced the factory Altamont stocks with 80's S&W genuine target stocks. Feels great, and I shoot it better. I think the max price I have paid for stocks on ebay is around $50. You must be patient. Look at gun shows, and try classifieds here. Herrett Target Stocks are nice too. I have them on a 28 no dash. Good luck on your hunt. It should be worth it! Bob

Take a look at Altamont or Ahrends. While these are new grips, they have the look of older ones. All are under $100.

38splfan and others on the forum;

Moderators: I apologize if I am violating rules by posting seller and site info, so if need be please delete.

I would really like to know when you get your stocks from that guy on E-Bay whether they actually fit or not.

I too am looking for N Frame Targets, preferably football cut-out for my Model 25-2 in .45ACP.

I saw the same ones you evidently did yesterday on Ebay and first thing I noticed was they were "new", not new old stock, but new, and he had 10 sets available, tonight it reads 5 available, 5 sold. If this is the same guy (Chris something out of Hemosomething Fla) please check his negative feedback...both had to do with "new" stocks for S & W, one negative for the N Frames that didn't fit.

The other thing that didn't look right was the sellers caveat for you to be sure the part will fit your gun.

I was just totally hesitant.

I saw, like you that real originals were going for $150 and up (way up....some bids had already passed $238.00)

Again.......it is not my intent to crank anyone off especially a possibly good seller, so please let me know via PM if need be if those guys for $59 plus $5.96 or so for S&H really do fit. They really look good, but he doesn't say what wood, or where made and I did buy some real cheapo's years ago that actually cracked in my hand trying to just fit them to a Colt so I could save the originals.

Forum;

Charlie B here again.....I didn't think (brain drain) that maybe 38splfan didn't even buy from the e-bay seller I just posted about so I apologize to all for maybe stirring up a ruckus's for nothing.

With the N frame guns you may also look at fitting the X frame grips as I have read that some folks with the 329 Scandium frame 44's use the X frame grips to help soak up recoil from the lightweight N frame 44's. Good luck.

Hey,

I have bought grips from that guy in FL before for my model 657. They fit really well, and have no problems. I would buy them again at that price.

These Nills grips from Germany are definitely big. These are rosewood. The quality is among the very best.

I like ahrends's grips, but don't have particularly large hands. However, you could call and speak with them, as they are nice people and will try to help size your grips. Nills are a bit cheaper (10%?) if you buy from their US importer (can't remember who that is, but google it and you will find them)

Pachmayr Presentation grips are huge and being rubber will help absorb recoil. I have huge hands and they fit great.

Herretts will fit stocks to the size of your hand. If you want it right, sometimes you have to pay for it. The good thing is, you can use them on like framed guns. I have a set of their Jordan Troopers on my model 29, but on occasion I use them on other"N" frames. Very high quality with great fit and finish.

I just bought a set from that guy (Al) in Florida. They are absolutely gorgeous and fit my M29 and my hand better than the factory grips. The medallions are a tad "bright" for my taste, but other than that, I can find no flaw with these grips. Considering they were $65 including shipping, I'm especially pleased.

There is another thread on the forum talking about stocks from Thailand. I have had excellent luck from there. I am seeing stocks like you are looking for for less than $50 on eBay. You might go take a look.

There is a current thread about Thai grips. Here is the link to that thread: Thai Grips There were three vendors on E-Bay that several of the posters spoke well of. Their grips sell from $28 to $46, you might want to check these vendors out on E-Bay:

Jaruwan.p

Reddkultt

8guns

Jaruwan and Reddkultt have a broader range of styles. How you feel about E-Bay might influence you. Personally I have never discovered why many have such a problem with them!

Cullina makes a larger grip than the factory targets. IIRC his grip is called magnum.

I bought some Altamont targets for a 25-5 but they ended up being slim just like the grips on the new 29's. Someone mentioned their Coke's, can anyone confirm/deny if they are slim or correct?

I did this and couldn't be happier. They aren't target grips per se but if you have a larger hand they fit great. They really tame the recoil. With the wood 329 grips it was painful to shoot more than a cylinder, now a box is a good afternoons worth.
