Model 69
Hi y'all.
I'm new here.
I have a Model 69 (44 mag 5 shot Stainless) and I love to shoot it. The issue I have is after a little while the trigger guard beats up my middle finger and it becomes painful to shoot and I start to flinch. I am looking at changing the grips to something that will either reposition my finger below the trigger guard or move it back away from the trigger guard.
Does any one else have experience with this problem?
Any Suggestions?
I suppose I could wear some sort of glove, but that may not always be an option.
Thanks for any thoughts on this
John.

Get a pair of the X-Frame grips from S&W and I think you will be a happy camper. I can shoot my 69 all day with the X grips.

Hi John, welcome to the forum !
The M69 is a fine revolver, and is IMO greatly improved by installing the Hogue X-frame grips from the Model 500 and 460 guns. They can be purchased directly from S&W, or sometimes from Bud's.
The extra padding behind the frame cushions the recoil better than the stock offerings, but may also reposition your hand into a less-painful spot.
Good luck, and please feel free to post up pics - we love 'em here!

Another X-frame 500 grips lover here. They really tame the recoil for Magnum rounds.

Trying the different grips can help reposition as mentioned. Working on your grip with the existing grips is worth while too. I recently came back to shooting DA revolvers after shooting SA autos for a while. It really took me a while to get the factory grips on the 69 figured out, I needed to go back to some old training materials, watched some Miculek videos, etc.....
I went through a range session with some 90% magnum loadings (light enough I could go through a couple hundred rounds, heavy enough to know I wasn't shooting specials). Eventually got my grip to where I wasn't getting stung anymore, then ratcheted back up.
Love the gun though, it's really what I was looking for when I sold off my GP100 and Redhawk.

I initially had problems with a 6" 629 and came to conclude it was the Ammo!
Tried 500 x frame Grips. Didn't work. Recoil was still there. Made length of pull with index longer. And that I didn't like also.
Shooting "black bear and deer load" and anything heavier, will be significantly great in recoil- especially in a 4"!
I recommend finding loads for it, or developing your own. I did with mine and now I'm happier with it.

I was shooting some pretty light loads. The trigger guard just beat the hell out of my middle finger. Tried changing my hand position. It didn't help much. Worst comes to worst I'll try some sort of pad, either on my finger on or the trigger guard.

Everyone's hands are different.
Luckily the factory stocks on the 69 work fine for me.
The K/L frame RB targets also give plenty of knuckle clearance.
Another possibility is contacting Herrett's, the custom stock makers.
Phone them and discuss your needs with one of their custom stock makers.

I'm using Herrett Jordan Troopers on my M69. No knuckle busting with regular 240gr magnum loads, and it makes my mid range handloads feel like specials. Best $134 I spent in a long time

If that's what is beating you up, also check out the Hogue sq butt conversion monogrips. They give you more grip below the guard and help push your grip down. I go back and forth between those and the factory grips. The backstrap is exposed, but with my grip, I'm not really taking as much of the recoil directly from the metal as I expected at first. And if you are doing a two handed grip, I like the conversion grip quite a bit better.

I had the same problem. I put a set of Hogue's on mine and it dropped my middle finger below the trigger guard and it cured the problem.

Put new500 X frame grips on. Justs came in from shooting. They worked for me. No bruised knuckles. Got about 3/8" Clearance between the trigger guard and my knuckles, the factor grips were touching.
Thanks to everyone for the replies. : )

WOW----I WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THESE BEAUTIFUL HERRETT JORDAN TROOPERS.....
IMHO--IT APPEARS THAT THEIR SOMEWHAT UNIQUE SHAPE, WOULD MAKE IT NEAR TO IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOUR FINGER TO BE SMASHED, IN RECOIL.......

You are correct. We shoot everything from 44 special loaded with Trailboss, to my Unique loads, through Buffalo Bore with no finger smashing. If I have a go to gun other than a 1911, I always reach for my M69. It was worth the money and the wait for the grips.

I've got the same problem. With my model 29 the middle section of my middle finger bumps right up to the trigger guard. The first few rounds aren't too bad but 10 or so rounds later I have to put the gun away. I tried gloves, vet wrap, etc., nothing helped. I threw on a set of NOS Pachmayr Presentation Grips (size Large) and no more trouble. The Pachmayrs fill in the little space S&W leaves so my finger doesn't sit there. I get them off Ebay for $10 to $20.
