Default S&W 629 Deluxe

I ordered this Revolver last week and it came in friday. There is a problem that has bothered me all weekend. The Revolver has a lot of fine scratches on the flat areas between the trigger top and the cylinder bottom back to the grips. If you look down the barrel on the right side about 1/4" from the front end of the barrel, there are more than 3 gouges that are to deep to call scratches. That was the first thing I saw when handed to me.

How can this be called NEW in this condition. My friend, the dealer said he can't send it back for another one. Can someone get me some options. The price out the door is $993.00. Why would someone (wholeseller) send a gun looking like that and say they won't take it back.

I think it was a Display gun or something like that. Also think thats why it was sold. I just bought 2 other new revolvers and not one scratch.

Anyone in the gun business have any options.

The gun has been registered in your name now it can't be replaced by the seller with a different gun
If it's new contact the manufacturer

There's a good chance that the distributor won't take it back without a restocking fee.

If the dealer isn't doing anything, call S&W. They might.

Well, your friend is trying to push a $1000 gun on you with serious condition flaws in your opinion. I too would have issues paying that kind of money for a new gun that looks like it skidded across a concrete floor. I would hope he would hear you out and try to help. I would think/hope he would be concerned about his reputation.

If he won't take it back you don't owe him to be his friend or customer afterwards.

Right now you are in the best position you are going to be in, you don't own the gun, you didn't pay for it, it's not registered to you. Once you buy, and pay and register , it will instantly become your problem. You then have to deal with, S&W, the dealer and the shipping. I say run Forrest run.

I bought a 3" 629 Talo from Buds Guns in December. MSRP was $999. I paid $793. It was sent to my lgs where I am free to inspect it. If I don't like it, they take it back and send you another. There is no shipping fee or sales tax. You should never pay MSRP again. I just bought a Kahr CM 40 from them today. Almost $200 below MSRP. Friend is no friend, I wouldn't except that gun.

Any time you take possession of a gun it's yours to deal with. I don't deal with gun shops that won't help me if I have a problem. I've learned from dealing with box stores that it can be a real hassle to get a problem fixed no matter what they promised you. I bought a shotgun from Gander Mtn. once. I didn't notice there was a problem with the carrier follower. They gave an extra year's warranty on the guns they sold at the time. They even had an in-house gunsmith to fix any warranty issues. I like to never got them to fix that problem and I told them about it within a week of buying that gun. Look close before you buy unless you can trust your dealer. Still look close but you can worry less.

I think you should pass, and tell your friend he's free to sell it to someone else. His response will probably be "you have to buy it, no one else is going to pay $993 for it in that condition."

Default 629 Deluxe

Well, I went to the Gun Shop and told my friend I had a bad weekend. He asked why, I told him that I had to make a decision on the 629. He asked what decision did I make, I told him I couldn't buy the gun in that type of condition. He said it was no problem, he would just take it home, but he would not order me another one. I asked why and he said for the same reason as the first 629, "Condition", if it was bad he would end up with two guns.

He told me the supplier and him don't really get along. I asked him if there was a restocking fee and he said he didn't know.

Anyways about one hour later, my friend called me to tell me he called the company that sent the gun to him. They asked for some pictures, so he sent them a few. He said he would keep me informed. (tic, toc, tic, toc)

Gee whiz. So because the company he buys from treats him bad he thinks he should do the same to you? What's with the pressure to buy it anyway which is what I'm sensing? If he can't return his merchandise he's in the wrong business. I've never had trouble like that from a dealer. The LGS's where I am from all give me a 30 day trial usually. Sometimes it's only a week depending on what they have for sale like if the gun is going out of production they can't let me return it a month later. They have to return it while they can. But they have never gave me any guff over looking at something then not getting it. Even after I've owned the gun a while they will send it back to the factory for me. And gun companies as good as S&W generally let customers return guns even if they didn't buy them new and they are out of warranty. I've never been stiffed by a dealer. I've never had one even hint at something like your friend did. Maybe he just doesn't know other people don't do things that way. It sounds like he's working his way through this. Could be he's just new to the process. I'd go around the distributor if I was him and then find a new distributor.

Default Update

My friend "Dealer" came to my house today with somone who wanted to buy my 1977 Corvette. Well, I sold the vette and when they were leaving my friend told me my 629 Deluxe had shipped. He said to stop by tomorrow. He said the pictures he sent them of the gouges and scratches was enough to convince them and I'll have my gun tomorrow. Two wins in one day. WoW

Good deal. I'm glad there are still some things a person can count on and a S&W revolver is one of them.
