It is marked Model 27-8 and has a serial # of RMC0038.
I have attached a few pictures (not the best quality) that show what I have. But the gun if much nicer that the picture show.

I looked in the SW Std Catalog, 4th Edition, but could not find any dates related to a 27-8 with such a Serial No. Hopefully one of the experts can take up the torch!

Beautiful gun!

Could this be a 2007 Model 27-8 "Registered Magnum" model from the Performance center? Sure looks like it. Wowza..

There was similar 5-inch gun that was called a Registered Magnum. It was a 4-screw, 8-shot, nickel M27-8. It had the s/n of RMD, a product code of 170309, and shipped in July - September of 2007.

Based on the s/n, your 4-inch (3.5-inch?) gun is probably related. The RMD was a Lew Horton gun, so you might be in luck. Just contact LH and they'll send you a provenance letter with all the details -- like how many were made, when it shipped, type of stocks, etc.

The 170309's came in a PC fancy aluminum cases. Did you get the case and/or sleeve for this RMC? If so, on the label, what's the Product Code (sku) and Spec. Ord. number (a 4-digit number that likely begins with "7").

Regarding value, I'd say around $1,000, give or take. It's hard to price limited run guns like this, because there are few pervious sales to use for comparison.

Kernel,

I purchased this gun from a friend that was selling them for an estate. The good news is that I did get the aluminum case from the Performance Center but I was not sure if it was for the gun or not. The bad news is they did not know the combination for the case so the pried it open to see what was inside.
They did not totally destroy the case, but it will not currently latch closed and I don't know the combination.
Thank you the information and I will try to track this down with what you have given me to work with. :

The Product Code and Spec. Ord. number can be found on the paperwork that shipped with the gun. Sometimes spare box labels are stashed under the case/box foam lining.

Would appreciated if you could share those two numbers.

When you get your Lew Horton letter take a picture of it and post it here.

This is a gun that has never been shown or discussed in any detail on this forum. We should make some effort to document it, so it's information is searchable in the future.

They were the PC Classic Registered Magnums. They came in blue and nickel, 3.5" and 5". There were limited runs of each. They actually came with a certificate. I think there were maybe 300 blues in each barrel size: maybe less. I think there were less nickels, but I cannot remember. Have a certificate if I can find one.

Not currently available. Figured I put it up somewhere...

Anyway, the one I shot printed tight groups and I was much surprised. Nice gun and good find.

I'll be putting one of these on my radar screen. Very impressive revolver. Last gun show I attended there was a PC aluminum case for sale cheap. Almost bought it. I'm learning.. I would "letter" your Registered Magnum.

Hello,

I am attaching several pictures that I took this morning of the case that I got when I purchased the revolver. To tell you the truth I don't know why I had not looked under the foam for any related items when I first got it.
That being said, I did find some pretty cool items that belong to the revolver. The only thing that I was hoping to find was not there and that was a letter or some kind of certificate about it.
As you will see in the pictures I did find several things including the keys for the gun, speed loading clips, factory test fire casings, lock and a few other items.

In the paperwork there should be a piece of paper with the Product Code and Spec. Ord. number written on it.

What are those two numbers?

(Spec. Ord. number isn't that critical, now that you showed the fired case envelope).

There will be other writing on that piece of paper, so you will have to look for those two numbers. I've seen lots of these presentation case guns and the numbers are mixed in there with all the rest of the paperwork.

Here is what Earl Minot had to say about my 27-8. Those are not the original stocks

Its funny that my RTD serial number was test fired in February. Possibly the blued Registered Magnums were made first?

I don't guess the original owner wrote down the lock combination and left it in there !
The case doesn't appear to be damaged too much by the forced opening.
Extremely nice revolver , gone to the range yet ? I bet it's a sweetheart .

Welcome to the Forum

Congratulations on acquiring a fantastic revolver.

There have only been 6 variations of the 8 shot, model 27 ever produced

All 6 in this set are the same serial number with a different prefix

The 4" and 6 1/2" blue models were manufactured in 2000
The 3 1/2" and 5" blue models were manufactured in 2006
The 3 1/2" and 5" nickel models were manufactured in 2007

These are some of my favorite model 27s

Did you go to the gun show in Evansville last week?

No, I did not get to make it to the show in Evansville, I was a little under the wheather. :-(

Gary,

I have looked on everything for the combination but have not found it. And I have not made it to the range yet, but this thing feels like it will be sweet to shoot. It is as smooth as butter, and has a fantastic trigger.

I noticed the letter stated all had the gold bead front sight. I handled maybe a dozen of these, and that is a mistake. I never saw a gold bead on the shorties. They were not offered that way: only the 5" versions had the gold bead.

Good catch. The OP's 3 1/2-inch has a black ramp.

His letter from Lew Horton says RCM0038. Your serial number is RMC 0038. One of you has transposed the letters MC to CM.

One of you has transposed the letters MC to CM in the serial number. The Lew Horton letter says RCM0038 and the gun has RMC0038

I am pretty sure that I gave him the correct serial number but I will have to double check when I get back to work on Monday.

Each CRM was shipped in an aluminum PC case, but there was an envelope that had a certificate to be filled out by the seller to the buyer. This is my only copy left.

There were only 250 each of the blues, and only 100 each of the nickels.

Don't sweat damage to the case.Nothing special-just a cheap Chinese import. You probably got a bargain, even with it not considered.
These are nice guns.I had a blued 5 incher.

I had never heard of this model until I was reading this thread yesterday. This afternoon I was checking over my list of firearms dealers, up here in Canada, and right there in front of me was a 5" nickel 27-8, in excellent condition. I asked for the serial number and sure enough, RMC0070. It doesn't have the case or paper work, and isn't a safe queen. It should be here in a week or so.

Default Letter from Lew Horton

Forum,

I had mistyped the serial number when I sent my email requesting information on my S&W model 27-8. Below are copied of the information that Earl Minot from Lew Horton was kind enough to send me.
One is the letter talking about the revolver and the other is an ad from 2007 when Lew Horton was selling these.
I would like to say "Thank You" to all of you for your help and information.
Now I need to get this thing to the range and see what she can do!

Best Regards,
Darryl

A quick google search for brief case lock assemblies turns up several similar looking locks, not sure which one you have a close at the lock assy. may provide a vendor.

Thanks Silentflyer,

That is a great idea, and it would made it look much nicer that it looks now!
And the installation looks as it would be very fast and easy.

It has arrived. Great condition overall, a few nicks in the finish on the stocks. I got my letter from LH, one of 107 made, one of 10 shipped to Canada.

Great gun. Original stocks, as was the 3 1/2" shown earlier. Targets on the 5"; magnas on the 3 1/2". Think all the nickels received rosewood.

Think the default setting on the cases was all zeros, though they may have been changed by the purchaser.

PM me a mailing address or PO box if you will. I have a set of those stocks to send you. Allow the forum to help make it look better. They were not numbered to the gun. We'll need a new picture when you get them, though. Great to be a member here.

Got it!

If I remember correctly, retail on those 27-8s was about $1500.

Regarding the Performance Center cases, it is all too easy to inadvertently change the combination and therefore not be able to open it.

Here's another 27-8 3.5" that made it across the pond - s/n REM0088. The deep blueing and rosewood magna grips make for a great colour combination as seen here.

Sorry to take so long to get back to this thread. Here is another shot of my 27-8 wearing its brand new stocks, generously donated to the cause by member Be Still, makes it look like a million bucks.
I also recently picked up a S&W knife, BNIB, makes a nice combo.
