Default Just bought my first Nickel Smith - 442

A local gun store had a Nickel model 442 no dash for sale and I decided to get it.

Sitting in the jail, but I'll post a picture when it comes.

I didn't even realize there were 442's made in Nickel.

It's sort of a satin finish on the frame, and the barrel and cylinder are shiny Nickel.

Seemed to have a nice trigger and no crack under the barrel.

I had them take the grips off so I could see that the big "N" was on the grip frame.

The serial number starts with CAC so it's probably from around 1996 -- near the end of the no dash period.

Does anyone else have a Nickel 442? How rare (or not rare) are they?

Does anyone have a feeling for the durability of the finish on the Nickel plated 442's?

How does it compare with the durability of (or lack thereof) the finish on modern 642's?

I bought a brushed nickel 442 around 1994. My son talked me out of it about 5 years ago to carry as a BUG, he is a LEO. The finish has held up well. I replaced it with a 642.

Sounds like a product code 102812 with a Satin Nickel (matte) finish. Something S&W offered for a short while.

I have a M38 no dash with a Satin Nickel finish, c.1996, an it's one of my favorite carry pieces. The whole gun is a uniform dull matte. Cylinder, frame, and barrel. It looks like "vapor hone" or "bead blasted" stainless guns from the Performance Center.

The flat nickel finish seems very durable. No flaking or any scratches yet. I actually prefer it to my stainless M638, which clearly has an anodized frame that's a different hue and shine from the stainless barrel and cylinder..

S/n prefix says your M442 likely shipped in.......
April of 1995.
But it could of been a few months earlier into 1994.
