Default My newest Valentine, S&W 686-5 7 shot 3"

Just picked this one up recently, LNIB, was an impulse buy but turned out to be a great buy. S&W 686-5 7 shot with the box, got a set of combats that are going on it.

Great find there. There is something special looking about the 3" 686. Don't forget about the range report once you take it out.

What's nicer than a 686? One with extra holes! Matte finish looks right. Nice!!

The 104190 is something of a mystery gun. Nada in the SCoSW 3rd Ed. Don't know about the 4th. There's not all that many of them.

I stopped buying gun, I got plenty... but if i saw this one... yes out my cash would come. A beauty! How much did it set you forward?

Oh yes I want more guns, 3" 686 plus, 5" 686 Plus Talo, a 41 Mag to shoot my stock pile of 41 mag ammo, and a few others, but no, I have enough.

This is part of my 586 and 686's:

Interesting gun. Would you say the finish is factory glass beaded? That would make it a little odd right there. I'm curious because I found another 686-5, 7 shot but with a four inch barrel and it was (what appeared to be) glass beaded from the factory but I wasn't sure since 99% of the 686's I see are standard brushed stainless finish. As the Kernel said, I'd love to find a little more info on this model.

I will also try to get the product code from my 4" to see if they might be the same possibly?

One of the other things I noticed on this gun is that the trigger is exceptionally smooth. I purchased this gun at a gun show so it's possible there are aftermarket springs, etc however I do not see any evidence of that (screws, etc) beyond above average smoothness.

Nice looking pistol OP.

I enjoy rare revolvers thread like these because they even stumble the guys with vast amounts of Smith and Wesson knowledge.

I would definitely say it is factory glass beaded. It has the exact same finish as my 625-7 45 Colt 3". I've looked in the SCS&W 4th edition and I cannot find anything on this model. Might have to send off for a letter.

I have collected 686s for quite some time and the yes the finish on these 686-5s are factory glass beaded. You are also right they have one of the smoothest actions I have felt from the factory.

OP congrats on finding a very rare gun. Do not have exact details on how many made but been said 100 or less. Took me years of searching to find my 1st one and happened to luck into another NIB one a few years later as well.

Inspector C, I have never seen a 4-inch 7-shot -5 exactly like that. It does look kindred to the 104190.

What's the s/n?.

If you have the box, what's on the label?

Agreed. Nice revolver. More holes are better as long as the extra holes are intended for ammunition (not keys).

Other than this one, I have not seen one like it either. The serial number for my gun is CCW1055. (I thought this was interesting as a CCW holder)

Product 104194, Spec Order 8237

So that solves the mystery about whether it's the same product number, it is unique for this barrel length.

Any thoughts? I don't have the catalog handy, or else I'd look that up and see if it has any details for that code.

Code says it shipped.....
August 22, 1998.
The product code is for a normal standard production 4-inch 7-shot. Very cool, but it's not that uncommon. I've got a least a dozen in my database.

Does it have the uniform flat matte finish like a Performance Center gun? Do you see any grain, or swirl, in the finish?

BTW, two different barrel lengths would never share the same product code. The pc is a totally unique identifier.

Didn't see it in my copy of the 4th either. 104192 was the closest I saw.

Yep, you are correct. The 237th day of 1998 would put it in August. I didn't expect it to be uncommon as a 4" 686, I just had not seen a standard vanilla round butt 686 with a glass beaded finish. Do any of the ones you've researched with this same product code have a glass beaded finish?

There are no imperfections to the finish that I can see. It's really pretty perfect so if it is aftermarket, it was done by a professional. And it is also applied to everything, hammer/trigger/screw heads, etc. Everything I can see without taking the grips off except the sights.

.... glass beaded finish.... There are no imperfections to the finish that I can see....
That's interesting, since all the other 104194 I've seen had a typical standard production brushed finish. You can see little swirls and such. Normally, if they put out a limited production gun with a matte finish they would give it a new product code.

The finish could be aftermarket, it could of been sent back to the Mothership and refinished, or it could be original. If it's original it's curious that it doesn't have a unique product code.
