Default 642 pro series

I just purchased a 642 pro. The box that it was in has the sticker that says 642 pro series. The serial numbers on the gun and box match. The model number CZH0480 on the box is correct for a pro series but, the frame on the pistol says air weight instead of pro series like the one pictured on the website. The pistol also has the moon clips like it should too. Did S&W change what is printed on the frame recently? Looks like all the pro series pistols say pro series on them but, not mine! Kind of seems like a cross breed or something.

I just sent mine (product # 178041) back for the same issue. It's supposed to say "Pro Series". My ser# prefix is "CYY".

Just as a sort of "bonus", at no extra charge, mine also had long ratchets, and a canted barrel.

Default 642 pro

Made a mistake on my post. SKU number is 178042, Model 642-1 and the serial number is CZH0480 which is a pro series but it says air weight on the frame. Almost as if someone machined the cylinder of a regular 642 for moon clips and sold it as a pro series. Bad thing is, I purchased from a dealer as a new model. I guess a new side cover is all that is wrong but still!
Any more info. Is appreciated.

I looked at a 642-1 about a month ago at LGS. It also said Airweight on side. In fact I woudnt of known it was a Pro if retail tag on it didnt say so, and said moon clips. I pulled trigger on it was not smooth like 2 PC versions I own. So my take was kind of like you said, moon clip machined cylinder on regular 642 and thats about it. No trigger job done I guess. I'm curious what your take is on trigger pull of yours. Is it just stock?

S&W has been marking these M642's Airweight for a while. At least from 2013. (CZH is a Feb/Mar 2016 s/n). You're not alone. I don't know if it's right or wrong, but it's not uncommon. I never thought much about it, but it is kind of a gyp.

Maybe the S&W plant is under attack and they're getting the guns out the door any way they can to defend the factory, markings be darned!

There DO seem to be an awful lot of 642 variations out there, so confusion can be expected. As well as an awful lot of imperfections: I'm not the only one discovering this. On the plus side, the variations give me a reason to procure more J-frames.

Default 642 pro series

I recently bought one also and had the same issue. When I called S&W about it, the lady I spoke with seemed surprised and sent me a mailing label to return it. I told her I was kind of worried it may not have received the PC love that it should have and she said they would go over the whole gun. I sent it in and got it back a month later with a Pro Series side cover on it. The paper that came back with the gun said the customer complained the gun was stamped incorrectly with airweight instead of pro series. Re-lasered and refinshed gun. I don't think they did anything with the action. I wish I would have got the PC Enhanced action like I bought my wife instead of the pro series. Still a nice gun though.
