Default Kinda a Queer Duck Here...maybe...

I got this ugly thing yesterday. It's marked as a Model 36 with no dash in the crane, but has a no pin barrel. S/N is J891702

It has 0 finish, unless you count "patina" which is a fancy name for rust in this case, but mechanically it's in great shape. Someone has bobbed the hammer, but left the S/A notch. The stocks are from a more recent time, I THINK, but I got no real idea when it was made. I would think a "no dash" would be older than the "no pin" period, so I guess the lack of a dash is a mis-stamp.

I cleaned it up a lot with Flitz and even a Scotch Brite pad on the really rusty parts. I figured I couldn't make it much worse. It actually looks halfway decent now. A good flush with Gunscrubber, and a couple of drops of Break Free smoothed up the action. Now to get time to get to the range and see if/how it shoots.

It is probably from late 1981 to early 1982. The barrel pin went away before the end of the model 36 and the J prefix. The stocks are new-ish wood laminates. The old ones probably got eaten by termites when the gun was buried .

Looking forward to the range report.

Several people have said that.

I kinda like the "rat rod" look.

I'm just gonna leave it the way it is, at least for now.

I'd leave it just as it is. A great shooter with "character" that ya don't worry about. IMO it's in that "if only this gun could talk" category

In 2 dimensions it does have a certain urban camo effect. I'm guessing it has some deep pits. I just couldn't leave it alone. I'm a tinkerer by nature and with my j-frame experience, I'd have to fix it.

Give it a good coating of wax and leave as is. Great conversation starter.

Something tells me that M-36 could tell a few good stories. That one has been down the road a few times, probably on dirt roads. I would keep it just as it is.

Cajan, have you cracked it open? If it looks like that on the outside the inside could use some breakfree Q-tips and maybe some mothers mag polish.

Cajun Bass:

Personally, I think this would be a great project gun. I'd hand sand the piece and cold blue it. Heck, you don't have much to lose here.

Good luck,

Dave

Thumbs up

Don't change the finish.
Find a beater holster & put it in.

Tell everyone that sees it that you bought it new and carried it everyday.

" Yeah, I remember the day I was pinned down behind the bar. All I had was my ol' J frame. Shot all six of 'em - no reload. But I don't wanna talk about it."

No, I don't think so. It looks like someone stripped the blue off with sandpaper or something like that. There is one place on the right side frame that looks like where a finger rested on it. Maybe there was blood on it, maybe sweat. Maybe it was just rust.

No, I didn't open it up. I fiushed the heck out of it with Gunscrubber, then put a few drops of break-free here and there. Trigger is smooth as silk.

Oddly enough, the cylinder and the bore were as clean as a whistle. A Hoppes patch bought out nothing but dust.

I suspect if it could talk it would say it has spent years under a pickup seat, or in a sock drawer, got some rust on it and someone tried to "fix it."

Looks awesome.

The stocks are by Altamont, I believe. Depending on if you get light strikes from the bobbed hammer, I might suggest you replace it. Otherwise just shoot it and enjoy. Hope you got a hell of a good price for it. Perfect example of man's inhumanity to handguns.

I'd leave it as is if it were mine. Coat it with wax or something else to stop any new rust. Now you have a good working revolver that you can toss in the tackle box, under the car seat, or carry without worrying about damaging the finish.

So these are the "after" photos? Awesome!

Such nonsense how I take pride dressing like I buy 2nd hand clothes from Walmart, but all my guns need to look NIB.

Owning a highly functional beater should be a requirement to obtain a man card. Another reason why i dont have one.

Man, that is one ugly gun! No way I could leave it bare metal because you will be asking for rust and/or pitting if you intend to use it as a truck or tackle box gun. I would have to put some kind of protective finish on it to prevent it from getting worse. YMMV

I think that it is great looking as it is and outside of a good coat of wax, I wouldn't change a thing on it as long as it shoots great. There will never be a doubt that it yours.

I got my daughter a birthday (May,82) Model 36 no-dash, no pin and one of the last of the J serial numbers.

Not unusual, cept for the finish, or lack of.

I realize that now. My confusion was due to the "no dash" and the non pinned barrel. I didn't realize that wasn't unusual for a Model 36. I always think of "no dash's" as being older.

The first S&W small frame I bought in 1974 was a real education. Got home & realized that 38S&W was not 38 spl. Almost as bad as the colt 38 super I sold. Buyer returned mad that the .45's wouldn't work.

Love the Rat Gun idea. If those are before photos, please post a couple of after ones. Inquiring minds want to know.

Not a big fan of the coated guns.
But this could be the one I would get coated.

It looks better in real life than in the pictures really. These are after maybe an hour with Flitz, and a couple of spots with a Scotch Brite pad.

It doesn't look a lot different, but it FEELS different. The metal felt like sandpaper before. Now it's smooth. I pulled the sideplate and the internals look fine. The gunscrubber bath cleaned out the old gunk, and a drop or two of Break Free slicked it up.

I'm thinking I might try cold bluing it. I got nothing to lose and can always start over.

She may have been run hard and put away wet a few times, but it looks great to me. Shows some signs of the hard work it has been doing.

The polished ruined the look IMHO. Had tons of toughness with the beater look.
And the grips are two different colors.
Find some beat up stocks on ebay, leave it out in the rain for 2 weeks. And repost results please

Don't coat it!

Leave it " a la natural "!
Jk! Do what you want. Just post pics. We like pics.

I'd just leave it be, and EDC it.

Default That poor thang

I never thought I'd ever see a handgun that was even uglier than my neighbor's kid, but there it is. That poor child is so ugly that he cries every time he sees himself in a mirror - and then the tears run up over his head because they're ashamed to be seen on his face.

Those are Altamont grips as I think someone up the thread mentioned. Fairly new series too.
