Default 686-4 6"+ model with a power port?

Good afternoon gents. I've found myself scratching my head with this one fellas, and I've yet to find an answer when I ask. I know the 686-4+ was only made for one year (keeping production numbers way down), but how many of those came factory power ported? I tried to upload a picture but I'm at work and my phone is acting finicky right meow.

THANKS FOR THE HELP FELLAS!

The 7-shot -4 was made from 1995 to 1997. That's three full years of production. They are not that uncommon. Some are not seen as often as others, but I'd say thousands of the more popular ones were made. I don't think S&W has ever disclosed the actual production numbers.

The 686+ didn't exists until there was only one production year left of the 686-4. Therefore, the 686-4+ was only made for one year. My question is, how many of those came power ported from the factory? Better yet, has anyone ever seen what I'm talking about?

I have a standard 686-5 with the powerport. Nice shooting firearm. Shot several deer with it. Is your question more about rarity and collector value of a -4 powerport or about shootability?

My question is definately about collector value/ rarity. I've never seen another one like this one, period. 7 shot, power ported, 686-4. I own it so I VERY familiar with the shootability. I don't think that porting a 6" full underlug is at all needed, but hey, at least it looks cool.

The add doesn't say if the power port is USB, Mini USB or Micro USB.

I added an aftermarket Firewire port to mine. Looks just like factory.

Just for the record, Performance Center made a 686 - 4 + with a ported barrel. The "Light Hunter".

I don't know where you got your information, but it's wrong. I've seen 7-shot M686-4 "Plus" that were made in 1995, 1996, and 1997. The 6-inch gun was product code 104198. The 4-inch 104194. The 2 1/2-inch was 104192. All 7-shot.

Didn't read it in a book. I've seen them with my own eyes, so I tend to believe it is true. The production ran almost EXACTLY three years. To the month.

A 7-shot -4 Power Port is something I have not seen. At least, not in a standard production gun. I thought I had, but couldn't find a record of it.

The Performance Center made some L-Comps with the PP. I don't know if any of them were -4's. It's possible. I think there may of been a few 4-inch M586-4 L-Comps. That M586 L-Comp is in current production, but, of course, it's no longer a -4.

If you find some 7-shot -4 Power Ports, post the product codes.

I have a power port but its a six hole cylinder. Used to have a red dot scope on it. The front sight can be changed without tools. Mine wears a partridge sight painted red for easier pickup.

Hard to know how an extra shot helps anything unless you plan to miss a bunch.

I that's not in my plan.

Too big for practical
use.

Pretty unhelpful overall.

Give it some thought.

104222 is the product code for a standard production 4-inch M686 with a White Outline rear sight. Your Mag-Na-Port was done aftermarket. Sometimes distributors sent off new guns, had them MP'd, before offering them for sale. When MP did this they would sometimes put a MP sticker on the box, or slip one under the foam in era of the blue plastic cases.

I have a 4" S&W 686 no dash and it has Power Points on each side of the Front sight
I've had it for about 10 yrs and its the best shooting wheel gun I own .
It has a great trigger job done to it and maybe ,I was thinking , the Power Points were added after market.
Anybody have any thoughts?

The Power Port is factory only. The barrel has to be made that way from scratch. A PP is at the tip of the barrel, ahead of the front sight, and includes a small expansion chamber.

What you describe on your M686 sounds like Mag-Na-Ports. They're a company in Michigan that developed a magnetic discharge method of cutting thin slots in existing barrels, without affecting the heat treat or rifling. They have NO expansion chamber.

MP did contract work for S&W, Lew Horton, other distributors, and anyone who sends them a gun. They all look and function just the same, since it's just that one company in Michigan that does the work for everyone. Check out their website, they're still around.
