I'm so disappointed!
So with all the violence I see on TV I thought that perhaps I should buy a gun just in case someone thought an old man would be an easy prey.
The xSperts all seem to recommend a revolver for its simplicity and ease of use.
I did a little research and came across this old revolver.
I would have preferred a longer barrel but I guess the shorter ones are cheaper as there’s not as much metal in them.
I’m retired and on a fixed income with a limited budget so I went ahead and bought it anyway.
It was pretty dirty, the owner said it hadn’t been shot in almost twenty years so I cleaned it up a little.
When I get time to get to Walmart I’ll get some bullets for it and see if it works.
One thing that really disappointed me was that when I took the handles off to clean it I discovered that it must have been a police gun.
If I had known it was a police turn in I would never have paid $425 for it.
I’ll have to be more cautious next time.
I guess you live and learn.
You can imagine how disappointed I am.
Maybe I can take I to the gun show next week and trade it for a longer barreled Ruger or Taurus.
James

You are obviously joking. . .pulling our chains. That makes the gun even more desirable especially in that condition.

Very clever little story. I thought you were pretty funny!! I especially liked the part about the short barrel being cheaper because they didn't have to put as much metal in it.
Very nice gun, and we are all jealous!!!
Best Regards, Les

Rats,
I guess I can't fool anyone!
As I've mentioned in a few other threads I started selling off some excess inventory a few yeas back and have sold aout seventy so far.
I had sold or traded a 6" 686 (no dash), a 686 Classic Hunter, a 6" 586, and four 4" Dan Wesson .357s.
A friend recently decided to get rid of some of his excess inventory as well and gave me almost ten thousand bullets, a good portion of which are .357".
I had sold or traded all my full size .38 / .357 revolvers and only have two M36s, a M60, and a 640-1 (.357).
I didn't think any of them would be that much fun to shoot several thousand rounds through so I was looking for a .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolver to load up the bullets and shoot.
I had stopped shooting SASS CASS a few years back and had sold the 7 1/2" Custom Ruger Bisley .44s that I had built up and was down to only one single action so I was thinking about a Blackhawk .357.
My cousin's husband is a retired Kentucky State Trooper and had given his father-in-law (my uncle) several K and L frame revolvers through the years.
I asked him if his father-in-law would sell any of them and after checking he said that he (my uncle) was not interested in selling anything at this time.
However, he had a few that he would sell ME.
He taught weapons and tactics, was the SWAT team commander, on the KSP revolver team, and the range officer for several years.
This 686-4 was his plainclothes duty weapon.
It was sent to the KSP armorer at Frankfort for an action slick up and overall tune up.
The DA is fantastic (not as light as one of my 625s or 646 that HAD to have Federal primers for reliable ignition)but was built to go bang every time no matter what ammo was in it.
The lock up is incredible and there's absolutely no endshake.
Whoever built up this revolver definitely knew what they were doing.
He knew it was worth way more but wanted me to have it.
I'm looking forward to taking it down to our range here on the farm.
I have a number of guns that, to me / for me, are far better EDC choices. This 686-4 is to be strictly a range fun gun, like the 4553 I bought in December.
Cheers
James

Well, James, you brought a smile to my face for more than one reason!!! Congratulations on a great gun, and although my 686 is a 4" West Virginia State police issue, it too is a great shooter, so I'll be willing to bet that you will have a bunch of fun with this one!!
Best Regards, Les

Thought it had to be a joke. I bought a 686 2.5" a few months back and it's a great piece. That one with a SP stamp on it makes it even better. Enjoy, and if you really only paid $425 for it, you better go in to hiding.

Yep, I really did pay $425 (total shipped and FFL) for it.
Like I said we're family and he wanted me to have it.
His only son-in-law is anti-gun so none of his guns will be going to him.
It'll be fun when I get some ammo loaded up for it.
Cheers to all.

You have been completely led astray. An old far... Er, gentleman like you shouldn't be shooting one of those fire breathing magnums. A .22 LR would be more suited to your needs and abilities.
Might I suggest a Single Action Pistol. You'll be much happier with a nice single action trigger pull, and nothing sets folks running like an old guy cocking a revolver in the middle of the night while he prepares for a little house clearing,
I could pick you up a nice gun at my local flea market and trade you straight away for that monstrosity you currently own. And instead of that un-tactical shiny stainless steel I'll get you a gun that's been painted black. Whatcha say, deal?

I'd find myself a pair of smooth finger groove combats with relief on the left for speed loader and on the right to show off the KSP logo, then try to shoot up all of those bullets you mentioned. Congrats on a nice gun with a fine family history.

MT told me a few days ago that he had shot the 686-4 less than a hundred rounds and that it had been in his gun safe for 20+ years.
A friend gave me about 1,800 loaded .357 magnum rounds yesterday (in addition to the thousands of bullets he had previously given me) so I'm looking forward to taking it down to our range and putting a couple hundred rounds through it.
I really don't care much for finger groove grips (wood or rubber) though I do have some rubber ones on a few revolvers.
I have many thousands of rounds through seven revolvers using the JM grips and really like them.
I have 15K+ rounds through my 646 with this particular set. I put them on the 686-4 and it was like shaking hands with an old friend - VERY comfortable and familiar.
I'll be looking for an older set of K/L round butt JM grips without the logo for the 686-4.
Years ago when I was shooting the 6" 686 (no dash) quite a bit MT had given me a bunch of HKS 586 speedloaders, the last three of which I sold on this forum last September.
The 686-4 will be strictly a range fun gun so I won't need any speedloaders for it.
If I want to practice loading a revolver fast I just get the 646 out of the safe and throw a few dozen moon clips through it.
Cheers to all.
James

Good Find
James
I have complete faith, that if you can acquire enough ammo, you will eventually be able to get close to your target.

My first reaction was to post "Everyone likes a little *** but no one likes a wise ***," but then I saw the number of likes you got. I think I'll just sit and think about this a while.

I'll offer that I'd rather be a wise one than a dumb one.
(BTW: That is NOT a personal reflection upon you or anyone else here, just a saying I have when accused of being a wise ***.)
Just consider the OP's post to be one made in fun and go with the flow.

A big THANKS to all those who joined in the fun.
And an really big THANKS to those of a kindred sense of humor who graced me with their Likes.
I'm glad that everyone (well almost everyone) joined in the spirit of levity and so added to the thread.

RoyMack,
Ouch! that hurt.
It's almost like you've been to my range and seen me shoot.
Do you think this is enough to start with?
I'm hoping that by the time I get this pan shot up I can move the target all the way out to the five yard line.
Still smartin' from that remark.

A Change Of Mind!

The 686-4 will be strictly a range fun gun ...

I am still persuaded that I have a number of handguns that are far better suited for use in self defense situations IF I ever found myself in such a predicament.
However, I'm also persuaded that the likelihood of me ever being in such a situation is astronomically small.
Therefore, while the M&P40 PC Ported with the Trijicon RM07 and 16 rounds of Federal HST on call is a great gun for movie type shoot outs after a strong a dose of reality I've decided to bring some of the range only / safe queens out and put them in the "go to town" rotation.
After some researching (and one bad purchase) I found a really great holster for the KSP 686-4.
The SpeedBeez holster is nicer than any production holster I've ever had and right up there with some custom leather I have that are twice plus its VERY reasonable price.
I finally found a set of the old style (non logo) Miculek grips for the M21-4 TR so it gets to go to town once in awhile as well.
I'm even thinking about taking the 646 off the farm on occasion.
Cheers to all.
James
