Default 3" 940 and 'Doc' O'Meara *08/07/17 Update post 17*

I had requested a ship date for my 3" 940 and was encourage by Mr. Jinks to letter this gun. I received the letter back yesterday and am posting part of it for you to see. .

My limited research yesterday and today turned up the Colt books that 'Doc' authored but as yet I've been unable to locate magazine articles that he has written over the years regarding S&W's and my 940 in particular. Does anyone have or know of such articles?

Thank you in advance!

You were lucky to get the name of the individual who was the first owner of your Model 940. It will be interesting to read how he wrote it up.

While those are attractive Target Stocks by themselves it would take quite a while for me to get used to looking at them on a 940.

The original rubber on my 3" is very functional. I wanted to occasionally fire it in local pocket pistol matches that, as part of keeping out fancy target guns, prohibit moon clips. To do that without affecting my 940's collector value I had a gunsmith alter a Model 60 .38 special cylinder to fit.

If you find Doc O'Meara'a articles please add them to this thread.

I have the original rubber stocks but they are rather small for me. The Targets are a bit big for the 940 but they work. The other option I have and like is Magnas with a T-grip. I have that set up on a couple of J-frames.

I've been searching for a 940 to go along with my 547. Yours defines Grail.

Hope somebody is able to help you find the articles.

Cheers,

I found a number of articles from him, but this is the only S&W related one I could find.

Thank you sir, I just found that one also. And that started me on a search of Australian magazines. I know he also penned for some other international magazines.

Default My Father's Smith 940 3"

I remember that gun and I'm surprised it didn't have stag grips on it as my father was well known for having on all his revolvers. I know he wrote articles for a Brazilian gun magazine and I believe a French or Spain magazine also. I can't remember the names of the magazines though. I do know that he managed to talk me out of my 2" Smith 940 which ended up among the 22 firearms that were stolen from his gun room the day before I flew in to ship his collection back to Arizona to disperse for my mother.

Very nice, I have given up on ever getting a 940 much less one with such history at a reasonable price.

I was good speaking to you today. Your info helped me find at least one article written by your dad concerning this gun. Now I just need to find someone that has the June 1992 Gun magazine that they'll part with.

Congratulations on the revolver and the GREAT background. It would be amazing if you could find the articles that Doc wrote using your revolver as the factory sample.

I am a big fan of the 940

I stuck with the stock grips on mine for pocket carry. However, I opened up the chambers on all of mine so that I could use 38 Super in them. Obviously they will also chamber and shoot 9x21, 9MM Luger, 380 ACP, etc.

I do not have a 3" . . . Yet

I do have a NIW 3" barrel if I ever decide to convert one of the 2" 940s.

Yep, I had already ordered it before I posted my response. However I would like to have an actual copy of the mag (rather than a PDF) from June 1992 if there is one to be had.

That is what I'm hoping for. After speaking to Doc's son today he also pointed me to some foreign publications Doc wrote for. Already sent an email to one of the editors in Australia. We'll see if anything comes of that.

Default UPDATE

I finally received the pdf of the article I've been looking for. It does picture my gun in the article which was written by Robert "Doc" O'Meara and published in the June 1992 issue of Guns and corresponds with the factory letter ship date to Mr. O'Meara Oct. 7th 1991. I still would like to find a copy of the entire June 1992 issue. But for now this will have to do.

I cannot put the entire article here without written permission so here is the photo with a part of the article.

I'm really happy to see you found the article my Dad wrote about your 940 Dan. Thank you for letting me know more about this site as well. I just finished my Smith 986 but I'm still not satisfied with the action even after installing a Wilson Combat spring kit. I'm getting ready to post a thread reaching out to the community to see if someone knows of a good revolver Smith to really slick up the action. Also from time to time it seems to want to hang up when shooting double action. Thank you again and I'm looking forward to future conversations.

Hi Dave, thanks for the help you gave. It was essential to locating this specific article. Now if I could find the whole magazine it would be great.

Which 986 did you get? Snub or 5"?
