640 PRO SERIES RANGE REPORT
I took the 640 out Thurs. after installing a Wilson spring kit. The mainspring was to light so I had some light primer strikes. But other than that I was thrilled!!!! The gun feels fantastic !!! It is very accurate at 10 and 20 yards. I was using .357 158 grain ammo and the recoil was very manageable. I love the night sights. I'm 66 years old and my eyes are not what they use to be, the white three dot system is "what the doctor ordered". I have found my perfect EDC handgun!!!!

I'd put in an Apex extended firing pin in just to be on the safe side. Should eliminate the light strikes. Did that with a 638 I had a few years ago.

I went back home and put the stock mainspring back in but kept the 13 pound rebound spring. The Wilson spring sounded a little weak. I may try your suggestion or get a set of Wolff mainsprings (3 spring set,8,8.5,and 9 pound). I may try both. Thanks for the suggestion. HAVE FUN, BE SAFE.

They're great guns, aren't they. I wish I could stick those sights on a couple of my other revolvers. I'd give the factory springs a chance to break in before swapping them out again; mine smoothed out a little after a few hundred rounds.

After many years of trying different combinations, I've settled on using a lighter rebound spring (13 or 14) with the stock 8.5 hammer spring. That keeps the ignition reliable but lightens the pull. I'm not really training for rapid follow up shots with a five shot gun so a lighter rebound spring is fine.

I agree with your comments. I need to put some rounds thru it before I change to much. Like a new car, it needs to be "broke-in". I also have a new 686 SSR and that's the way it is setup and it has a 8 pound trigger pull and smooth as glass.

I agree -- 13# rebound spring, stock hammer spring, a good cleaning and some minor debur/polishing results in a very nice trigger.

The 640 Pro Series with night sights also gets my vote for the best EDC revolver that is available today. Mine is more accurate than I with any of the several ammo loads that I have tried. The sights day or night are wonderful! Mine has been a pleasure to shoot right out of the box. I have not changed a thing from box stock. ...........

The 640 Pro Series is a wonderful gun, and is one that I carry frequently. I too love the sights, my eyes are a little older and they are both larger than standard on these typical J frames, and the tritium is a help in low light scenarios. The added weight helps tame the magnum recoil, and I also like the one piece barrel, and the older style four line stamped address, which harkens back to an earlier time. The ability to use moon clips is nice, and I keep mine loaded with a moon clip for the more reliable extraction, but I could take it or leave it. I am a great believer in using the stock springs, in fact when I get a used gun with replacement springs, I usually replace them with factory stock springs. Smith and Wesson have been making revolvers for several years now, and I find that they usually have a reason for using the weight springs for each given function. I may have been influenced in this way of thinking by my experiences when I attended the factory Armorer's school for the first time back in 1977. I was probably indoctrinated with factory propaganda at that time. They were celebrating I think, their 125th anniversary that year, and I was young and impressionable.
All in all a great little gun.
Best Regards, Les

I carry the 640 Pro everyday. To me it is the perfect carry revolver. Shoots .357 loads comfortably. I have looked at others and even the K6 but would rather have my 640. The sights rock on this gun. Great looking too!

Have to agree with others -- my 640 Pro is the bee's knees.
At 64 years I renewed my driver's license a few weeks ago. The lady said, "You're 20/20." I replied my doc says I'm 20/15."
"I don't doubt it," she said.
I still appreciate the the triple Tritium dots.
Small revolver (relatively speaking), big caliber, big stocks. Works for me.
640 Pro -- every day, all day.
Cheers,
Bob

I'm waiting to get my 640 Pro. My dealer is trying to find one for me, as they are a little hard to come by. In the mean time, I still have my 640-1 with a Big Dot front sight. I'm looking forward to the sights on the Pro and the ability to use moon clips.

Re 686 SSR: You may want to keep an eye on the strain screw. Mine (and that of 2 other posters) would work loose under firing and cause light hits. My 'smith used one of the Loc-tites to secure it and have had no further light hits.
