You did good. That sight will be easy to pick up and will stay that color for a long time.

My only sugguestion, is that I prefer to only colorize the actual serriations, and not colorize above or below. Helps vertical aiming consistancy in all conditions.

And I am cheap and lazy, and usually will use dollar store nail polish.

Nice job. Lots of us also use Testors. May I add one suggestion ? I've found that after the paint has thoroughly cured, to add a good coat of clear "Hard Nails" finger nail polish; the stuff is resistant to chemicals, oils, etc. My wife told me it's nearly impossible to get off with polish remover and an emery file so she won't use it; inexpensive at Wal-Mart

Sally Hanson "Hard as Nails" nail polish is about as good as a fly tying head cement as can be had as well. Even makes a good substitute for blue locktite. That is tough stuff with a number of uses.

If you ever wish to take it 1 step further, get some Glo-On glow in the dark paint. Comes in different colors. You can see it in the day, and glows at night. Of course it needs light activation. A high intensity flashlight will do it in under 30 seconds. Bob

After trying nail polish, using a strip of red duct tape, neither worked long term so I got a bottle of red automotive touch up paint and touch up auto clear coat. No problems at all.

Regular ritual around here for serrated sights.

Lately I've been using Testor's yellow florescent. Shows even in low light, outside in the sun it glows like fiber-optic.

I've been surprised, or not, by the number of police trade-ins I've seen/acquired with painted sights.

Wondering how the Testors (or the automotive touch up paint) alone, holds
up to cleaning solvent, gun oil, etc..

Does the Hard Nails polish dry into a gloss finish?

I'm going to do my 642 later this week. You guys have inspired me.

I used to use my wife's neon bright nail polish back in the day on my old model 36 but this time I've resorted to ordering some sight paint from amazon.

Yes it does, but on a ramped, serrated front sight, it doesn't seem to affect the sight picture ( at least for me )

I've been painting my sights for years. At first I used "White Out" correction fluid (do they even make that anymore?), but lately I've taken to using white/orange nail polish I got at the dollar store. The brushes are a little coarse...the toothpicks are a good idea. I'll try that next time.

I don't carry in a holster much anymore but it seems to hold up well, and normal cleaning chemicals don't seem to hurt it.

A couple months ago I finally picked up some neon green nail polish from Walmart, and painted several sights. In low light the stuff is pretty blah, but when target shooitng outside in good light, the stuff glows like alien blood !! But, it seems to take multiple coats to look decent, and the stuff seems very brittle. I had a large piece just snap of a serated revolver sight.
I may get around to trying the testors model paint.

I use a small model maker's brush to apply my model paint.
FIRST I clip off about half the length of the bristles for better control.
It can still take several tries to get a neat application.

I do something similar. I only add enough color to fill the rear sight notch, I find that it helps me gauge elavation of the front sight. It also gives me a reference point for holdover somewhat akin to gold bars of days gone by.

I gave up on brushes and use a toothpick since I only use a drop or two of acrylic paint from the craft section at Walmart. I cover the upper half of the grooved section on the front sight blade. After at least three coats of some bright color then finish up with my wife's clear Hard as Nails polish to protect my work. You would be surprised how durable these process is.

I found this orange jell nail polish at Sally's Beauty Supply while picking up my supply of goth nail polish I usually wear !!
Solvent will not cut it.

I'm doing my 642 as we speak. Using Birchwood Casey sight paint.

Got the first coat of white on. Will do one more in about 20 minutes or so and then try the fluorescent red following the second white coat.

Hopefully I do it as well as I did with my wife's nail polish on my model 36 years ago.

Finished. Two coats of white followed by three light coats of the "fluorescent" red.

Here's a quick image showing the newly darkened rear and painted front sight. The bright spot on the rear is just reflected light from outside the window.

For years I've painted the front sight on my 60 with flat orange paint. The rear gets flat black. I don't advise any paint that is glossy because these "sights" are hard enough to align without the added reflectiveness thrown in.

From time to time I have to re-apply because flat paint is not as resistant to cleaning solvents as gloss, but that's part of maintenance.
