Default A Model 63 2 Incher Finds A Home

Gentlemen:

I have owned and enjoyed shooting a 4 inch Model 63 .22 LR for years. That stainless Kit Gun is just plain fun and handy to have around.

A couple of years ago I ran across a neat NIB 2 inch Model 63 at the S&WCA Symposium. It was very tempting as it looked even handier than the 4 incher and had the added attraction of being much scarcer. As events turned out I ended up passing on it, but did not forget about what an attractive little gun it was. I resolved to find another someday and put it on that long list we all have in our head.

About six months ago my ship came in, so to speak. A fellow S&WCA'er had one for sale at what I thought was a very fair price. It had the original box and had been fired, unlike the first one I had seen was. I wanted to shoot this gun so the fact that it had been fired bothered me not at all as it was in fine shape.

I bought it and decided that the first change would be to dismount those comfortable but completely unnecessary and really ugly Uncle Mike rubber grips. A nice pair of stags grips would be so much more attractive I thought.

Patrick Grashorn supplied me with a fine set of stags with medallions. They fit and feel marvelous.

The next task was to find a suitable field holster for it. I had a number of nice J-frame holsters but nothing in a 2 inch size that looked right to me. My old pal Turnerriver ended up supplying me with a beautiful S.D. Myres carved holster for a 2 inch J-frame. It is, of course, considerably older than the revolver (probably 1950s or so) but to my eye it just looked right.

I have since shot the Kit Gun several times and have found it to be just what I hoped it to be.....a pleasure to carry in the field and accurate.

Here's a pic of the box label. I'm not sure but I am figuring that this one is about 1994 production, based on the BSA serial prefix. I don't know what the 4222 under the SPEC. ORD. is all about. Any ideas?

Anyway, I'm glad to have it and look forward to many years of rimfire shooting with the Kit Gun on my hip. That 4 incher is going to have a hard time competing for carry time with this one.

Awesome rig! There is not a thing about it I don't like. The spec. order is the ship date using the Julian calendar. 1st number is the yr. which you correctly identified as 1994 the 222 is the 222nd day of the yr or Aug 10 unless 94 was a leap yr. then you would add one day.

Aha! Thank you, Dan, for deciphering that code for me, and for your warm comments.

Very nice. The 2" 63 is a great revolver, I was lucky enough to pick one up a few years ago. I take it along on almost every trip to the range and fire at least a few cylinders thru it. They do appear to be an uncommon gun, mine is the only one I've seen in person.

I have a four inch, but I have to say I am sure I've never seen a 2" Model 63. I know this because I surely would have bought it if I had.

Flat out stunning. This morning I had almost scrubbed the idea of a Mod. 63 3" to go with my daughters Mod 60 Pro out of my head. Your post cost me $$$$. Thanks

That is a beautiful package. Congratulations on finding that one, they can be a bit hard to find.
I have one much like yours, I bought it new and it has been my woods walking companion for many years. No fancy holster however...

Default Nice Charlie

Had my wanting eye peeled for one of those but was scared off by the price they seem to command. Never thought any firearm would require an arm and a leg. Apparently the 2" M-63 wasn't built in sufficient quantities to satisfy the needs of those of us who fancy them much to my sorrow. Oh, I'm sorry Charlie, my purpose was to congratulate you, instead I was crying. Enjoy and good shooting!

I should have added that the Stocks/Grips and the Vintage Holster surely add icing to your to your already Happy Acquisition Cake! Envious is an understatement.

One of the reasons I bought a 3" Model 63 is because I figured I'd never find a 2" and probably couldn't afford it if I did find one. I like the 8-shot cylinder, too.

To the OP: that is a genuinely stunning combination of beauty, design and complementary accoutrements. Then the utility of the entirety!

Thanks for sharing,

ordnanceguy
A very nice setup for an excellent revolver! I can see the point of desiring a 2" stainless Kit Gun. I've never had a 2" Model 63, only the 4" square butt. However, my wife and I each own a 2" carbon steel Kit Gun, and both of us are quite happy with them. Mine is a Model of 1953 from before they were the Model 34. Hers is a Model 34. While I like my 4" Kit Guns a lot, carrying and shooting the 2" examples is an absolute hoot!

Special note: those Grashorn stocks are the cat's meow!

Default Just Plain Cool.............

Nice shooter Charlie!

The M63 is a favorite little gun for just plain plinking around

My 2" wears Spegel checkered boot grips, and is a ton of fun.

Love your choice of ammo too..

Enjoy that gem.....

I'd love to have a 2".

Just looked on Gunbroker.

$1200 is a little rich for me.

I don't seem to have a photo but might I suggest not letting your wife shoot it... mine somehow became her's complete with Pink Uncle Mikes grips instead of the black ones.
