Default Moon Clip Question - 627

Greetings, everyone,
Apologies if this is a dumb question (n00b). I recently purchased a 627 Pro. It came with 2 round moonclips (by "round" I mean that the middle is circular). I read that S&W started shipping the round ones instead of octagonal ones a couple years ago. Always, I wanted to buy more, but all the ones that are available online are octagonal.
Question: does the moonclip shape matter, or can I use the octagonal ones in my revolver (they all state they work with the 627)?

Thanks,
Robbie

You can use the circle or octogonal moons in your gun interchangeably. I buy my moons from Hearthco.com or Revolver Supply Co. RSC moons are less expensive but I have not had one failure with them.

As AZShooer says, they are interchangeable in any 627. Some feel the round style is more robust but that can vary from brand to brand.
The only thing I'll ad is that the two shapes do not fit the same loading tool (if you choose to use one.)
I use the clips and tool from this place ( for the 625, 627,629,686+ )as they make it easy to figure out which arbors fit which clips. Good prices too.
Deluxe Moon Clip Tool
A note on using clips in your 627. All ammo will not fit the clips equally. You need to take special care in assuring each round snaps into the clip as close the the rim as possible. Otherwise loaded clips can bind going into the cylinder. Use the search function ( or visit the links at the bottom of the page) for much more on this topic.

Ranch brand moon clips from Midway have worked well for me in a 627.

These are. Cheap and good from midway USA! I've purchased several packs and have not had one fail. Works well with mixed brass..

Let me piggyback. With a question: are all eight shot n frames in current production cut for clips? There is the 627 but also the trr 8 so dot hey both accept clips? I am starting to gain interest in the 8 shooters for uspsa as I much prefer revolvers to autos, but as most stages have multiple presentations of four targets each often requiring two shots per target, to be even reasonably competitive requires an eight shot.
While I don't care for locks ( not that I have had issue with the few I have had) I really hate the looks of stainless steel and if I made the leap would at least prefer the dull black versions. I invite opinions and comments thanks

I just replied to your other post, but yes, the TRR8 is cut for moon clips.

The hearthco clips are ammo brand specific. They make several different thicknesses.

Thanks, Wee,
I'm actually waiting for Outback Arms to call me to finalize my Deluxe order. Outback Arms purchased the "Deluxe Moon Clip Tool" distribution rights 1 year ago, so I now have to order it through them. Interestingly though, they don't accept payments online - you can place an order on their site, then you wait for them to call you for credit card#. Get with the times, Outback!

Truth be told, that's the only thing keeping me from ordering one while I wait on my 627 to come in. But that's probably just the lazy millennial in me.

I hear you, Mumbly-Peg,
It's been a couple days, and I haven't heard back from them. There's also no way to update your order (I wanted to add another arbor size & moonclips). By comparison, their competitor sells a knockoff product on Amazon. I'd like to support the original innovator, but they don't make it easy. I'm surprised they don't have payment instructions for telegraph or courier pigeon.

Major D:

The 627 and R8 or TRR8 327 both accept 8 round moonclips. I have a 627 5" and a R8. And the ranch products moonclips work fine in both. I load my 38 short Colts in them , and on some rare occasion 38 specials and magnums!
