Governor after 1st range trip
HEy guys. This is the first revolver ive evern owned personally and ive not shot in revolver in many years. So for an all black Governor is it normal after the first range trip for there to be some small scratches at the end of each chamber where it touches the forcing cone and also where pressure blows out famously?
I just wanted to ask and make sure.

Without a picture, and with the understanding I'm not a gunsmith, it sounds to me like your forcing cone has the infamous "wire edge" - just like my 360J has... Mine had (I cold-blued) them uneven and irregular scratches on the face of the cylinder. I posted something about that here on SWF and the consensus was a wire edge. Most gunsmiths, I guess, would have the proper forcing cone chamfering reamer (hope that's the correct term!). I've decided to not shoot mine (that's what SP-101's are for!) until I can scare up the money for a reamer kit from Brownell's. The kits are out of stock now anyway ...
Kind of a shame something like this slipped past QC - but my 360, otherwise, is perfect ...
Added: forgot to mention that this is usually directly related to a too-tight B/C gap. Most of the time, tight is good ... But, in this case it could aggravate the wire edge. If you do have a wire edge and tight B/C gap, I would be tempted to let a gunsmith take a look at it, or call the mothership. The wire edge will jump out at you if you shine a flashlight into the forcing cone ...

Interesting. Nothing i can do about it now, was just curious. I guess it stands to reason that particular area of the gun would show some signs of use, since its where two ends meet not to mention the pressure of the round going through.
When you buy a gun with a blu or black finish you have to expect some of these to pop up.

Could it be a little lead residue? I had something similar (looking) on the cylinder of my new R8, and with some gentle cleaning it slowly cleaned up. Just wondering.

+1 for Viper. I've shot nearly 600 rounds of various .45 Colt, ACP, Federal 000 buck and PDX through mine with no scratches. I have cleaned my share of lead. I don't shoot .45 flat nose lead anymore, only jacked .45s. I like shooting not cleaning... for what it's worth.

Nope. Just tried to finger nail it. There was some lead but definitely very small scratches. Meh..... I'll get over it.
Someone said Smith will re finish one time under warranty if it ever got too bad. It's not a display gun so as long as it's not leading to rust..... I'm good.

I don't own a modern blue finish S&W, but have read numerous times here on the forums that the "new process" finish that S&W had to switch to (because of EPA regs) doesn't particularly get along with the regular Hoppes #9 because it contains ammonia, which can discolor the blue. Use a cleaner that doesn't contain ammonia. The newer Smiths I own are all stainless, which ammonia based solvents don't bother. I think Hoppes make a solvent called "Elite", which is safe for the modern blue finish.

So now I have to wonder if it happened upon cleaning. Ugh. Frustrated with this.

As stated above, I have a trr8 and was told not to use #9 as well. Use CLP OR Ballistol. They're less abrassive. Also, if you have synthetic grips, etc. They're softer on these as well. Scratches are annoying, but also, a well used gun means it's loved. Overall, it's a tool, don't beat yourself up over it, hammers don't stay new either, haha, especially when it's the workers favorite hammer. I have lots of old tools from my grandfather that are hard used, but that's what makes em cool and gives them character. Take care of it, but don't sweat the aesthetics, just enjoy it. Just my humble opinion

Oh, forgot.... nice score on the Governor bro!! I always wanted one, had a Taurus judge I like, but like these more. May I suggest learning to reload 410? You'll save money and open a whole new world for you and this gun. For example, BPI has data for a single 000 buck going 2,400 fps!!!! You can do alot with this revolver!

Don't be.
Shoot (assuming that's why you bought it), clean, repeat.
Enjoy
