Default 642 Performance Center TALO Edition

Just purchased a beautiful 642 Performance Center TALO Edition.

SKU: 10186

I will shoot it this weekend.

One question for you experts:

Why doesn't this gun have the S&W logo on the right side--and/or say "Airweight" like the "regular" 642?

SKU: 163810

Or have the logo and/or "Pro" like the 642 Performance Center?

SKU: 178042

Seems odd.

Particularly that there is no logo on the right side.....

"Because" is acceptable response!

Thanks in advance.

That's Smith & Wesson for you. Always something different.

That 10186 is a nice looking gun. Good trigger?

I have one, love it! Congrats, you will love it too.
As far as the stampings, having owned 4 Talo edition guns now (2 non Smiths), my thought is that Talo wants clean guns with minimal billboarding on to finish their way. I know my Smiths are both like that, and my Ruger revolver has some stampings missing from regular production one. Again, that is my educated guess as to why, but not for sure.

Wild guess? There are so many different 642 variants that even plant personnel become confused which frame belongs to which variant. I've bought 2 642PC variants in the past 2 weeks, a -1 and a -2. I know for a fact it helps S&W sell additional J-frames to folks like myself!

P.S. I wish the PC would produce Model 638 variants. I have only one 638.

I have been looking at a Talo 642 online.

What do you think about the trigger?

How do you like the moon clips?

Any and all you can tell me would be helpful in trying to decide before I buy.

It's difficult to make a mistake when buying a 642. S&W seems to have the mfg down pat; the variants offer slightly different features, none of which IMO change the performance or "mission" of the gun. They serve as "gotta haves" for J-hounds like me who "gotta have" every example.

I just bought SKU 101648 which offers the moon clip feature. This is of no use to me, while the gun itself, a PC model, is very nice. My recent SKU 10186 also has an "enhanced action," whatever that means. Another nice gun. For someone considering a 642, I would not be reluctant to buy a PC model. You only go around once.

Just a guess, but maybe that's the way TALO ordered them.

The question is a good one. I have no answer but you have a really nice gun in your possession. A co-worker at our range just brought one in and if I didn't already have far too many snubbies I would be all over that gun.

What is "too many snubbies?" What is the derivation of that expression? From what planet did it originate? Parallel universe, possibly?

Havent bothered using them. Normally carry speed strips for concealed carry.

I have been happy with this revolver. It pocket carries nicely. I like the polished bits on the cylinder flutes and release. The rubber grip with the wood inlays feel nice in the hand.

I put 150 rounds through it at my first range outing (100 myself, 50 by others).

Regular 38 Special FMJ ammo from PPU.

Smooth and relatively light trigger.

Slightly reddened the web of my hand between the thumb and index finger. No discomfort the next day.

Actually stripped a bit of skin off of my trigger finger--took a thought or two to figure out what had done it....!

Overall, nice, smooth, accurate gun even up to 25 yards.

Have not yet used the moon clips, but I can see how they would help ejecting all the spent shells.

Well worth every penny.

Default 550 Rounds In--Shell Rims Beginning To Print On Frame

I continue to exercise my new 642 Performance Center at the range--killing plenty of targets at 7 and 10 yards with bulls eyes.

Noticed something this weekend, though, after putting the last 200 rounds of PPU 38 Special through it in a single hour-long range outing.

When I started cleaning it, I saw the initial appearance of the outline of shell rims on the frame on either side of the firing pin--just where the rims would be distributed around the circumference of the cylinder when the cylinder is latched.

Sort of like there was an imprint from the base of the non-firing shell rims when the gun fired.

I had no problems loading the rounds, nor ejecting them after they were fired.

Do I have too little clearance between the rear of the cylinder and frame (no noticeable drag, though, when opening or closing the cylinder)?

Normal wear-and-tear (my only other revolver is a 1941 M&P Model 1905, 4th change--blued and showing no such wear)?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Default Shell Rims Beginning To Print On Frame

I have also now noticed, after finishing the cleaning, that there is a shell rim indentation at the top of the frame, with the firing pin in the center.

Thoughts?
