Share some good news: Found a 3" 66-2
Found a 3" LNIB 66-2, Product Code 102712. It was made in early 1985. It came with the box, paper work, the wrap paper, and tools (still sealed in the bag). Magna grips and red ramp sights.
I had never seen one in person. If it had been shot, it had not been shot much. In any event, I bought it and put one hundred rounds through it.
I'm very happy. I would post a photo, but my wife has the camera and I'm afraid to tell her how much I spent ($865 plus tax!). At least the LGS through in a box of cartridges.
Now I have a 3" 65-3, 686-6, 60-15, GP100 and finally a 66-2.

The price you paid was actually very good for what you bought. I bought mine in May, 1985 and it is the essence of a great carry Magnum. They literally just don't make them like that any longer.

Very likely a grail gun for many on here. My only hope is if my Model 66-2 2 1/2" breeds with my 3" Model 13-2. You did well, and I was happy to read you actually shot this fine handgun. Bravo.

Thanks, Buff. You make me feel better. I passed up a super clean 3" Model 13 about 5 years ago that was selling for $700 and I regret it every time I think of it. So this time I just plunked down the money.

Grail gun is exactly right -- except that I never thought I'd see one! As for shooting it, since I retired I have reverted to being a 10 year old boy (with money!). Ain't no way I don't shoot it (is that like a triple negative?).

Well, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table never did find the Grail, so seeing one is a good thing! Agree you did well on the price, and you can consider it (one of a series of) a retirement present . Enjoy!

A masterpiece of understatement!
Ashlander, finding what you found in a gun shop is AMAZING!
Finding it in the condition you found it is SPECTACULAR!
Finding it with all of the factory original items in INCREDIBLE!
And, best of all, paying what you paid for it is a SCREAMING DEAL BY ANY MEASURE!
I would be more complimentary, but I'm only just now finishing my first cup of morning coffee.
In all (additional) seriousness, though: what you bought has been selling on the auction sites for big money recently, easily over a grand and often approaching two. I was very happy to get a 66-2 3" recently, by itself, with only a couple pair of aftermarket stocks and no factory magnas, and have been tickled pink to get it, and I paid (ahem) a good bit more than you did.
Congratulations on an EXCEPTIONAL gun and deal!

Here's a photo of the gun and goodies. I put some Ahrends grips on it for shootability.
Thanks everybody for the kind remarks. I feel very good about this purchase (so good that I told the wife the whole truth and nothing but the truth. She took the photo).

The general rule of thumb is that 3" 66s are starting at $1000 and go up from there!!!
Ya; you can find them for less ....... but not from a knowledgeable seller....... your package, would more likely than not, bring close to double what you paid for it.......................
FWIW I have three, two -3s and a -4. I got the -4 at a LGS maybe 10 years ago .....marked simply as a "Model 66 .357 magnum"....... for $325.

Ashlander lettered 3" 66s....... state there were somewhat more than 5000 made..... -2s,-3 and -4s........about the same number as the Original Registered Magnums of the 1930s which are bringing $4,000 and up .... to way up........ depending on condition.

Every once in a while, you stumble onto something too good to be true but it turns out to be just that. I've told this story on here before but about five years ago, I saw a GunBroker ad for a 2-1/2" Model 66-4 with a starting bid of $416. "That won't last long," I thought to myself. But several days later there still were no bids so I decided to help the seller by starting the sure-to-happen bidding war and posted the $416 bid. Three days later, I received an email notification from GunBroker that I had won the gun!
Still concerned that I might be being scammed, I insisted upon paying by credit card so I could enlist the credit card company's help if the gun never showed up or was not as the photos indicated. But it was everything it was supposed to be.

I had a 2 1/2" 66-2 that I purchased NIB that I carried off and on for several years as an LE. I really wanted a 3"er instead for the longer sight radius and full length ejector rod for magnums. i found a 66-2 NIB for $500, a few years back. That one will not go anywhere.

You know the sheriff will be knocking on your door with a warrant for grand larceny. You stole that gun.
I found one 2 weeks ago in like new condition with the magna grips but without the box for near the same price.
I find the K RB target grips very comfortable in my hand.
My serial is AHL34xx and same product code.

Thought I'd share a couple current photos of my 2-1/2" 66-4.
One of it in its lined Lobo Dual Carry holster and matching six-round cartridge pouch.
On the occasions that I carry it, I load it with 125-grain Black Hills .38 Special +P JHPs. Magnums through that short a barrel are just a waste of powder in return for a lot of useless muzzle flash and blast.

I tend to carry a less expensive Rossi or Taurus revolver (a Rossi 462 6 shot snubbie at a little less than 26 ounces, or Taurus 617 7 shot at 28 ounces) because, God forbid, if I have to shoot somebody I don't want the cops to take a good gun as evidence. However, as my accumulation of S&W revolvers has grown I could carry my 2.5" 66-7 (2-piece barrel, Aussie cop trade-in) without leaving a noticable hole in my line-up. The 66-7 is a great shooter.
