Default R8 for a 500

Hi to all, I would like to ask one question. If you had a s&w R8 would you consider a trade for a s&w 500?

Welcome! It might be a fair trade price wise but personally the answer would be "No". A 500 in my house would be a safe queen given the crazy cost of ammo /components. I also don't care to beat myself up shooting paper with that kind of recoil on a regular basis. The R8 on the other hand is versatile , inexpensive to feed and very manageable during firing. It will throw fireballs if I choose and mouse fart loads when I don't. Add an optic and it's a real hoot to shoot!

FWIW, my R8 would not be a trade candidate for just about anything I can think of.

I agree with Wee Hooker, unless you plan on Grizzly hunting in the future. R8 for a 500

I don't own an R8 but have some various .357's including an 8-shot (27-7) but doubt I'd swap anyway unless I somehow needed the 500 as the 357 IMO is more practical and versatile for most folks.
But on the other hand, I wouldn't swap my 4" 500 for the R8 either.

Sadly most of the guys I see with .500s use them for watermelon blasters. Yeah they are a hoot but there's that little voice in the back of my mind tallying up the cost of ammo (and I'm shooting a buddy's gun...I don't own an X frame!).

I own the 460 XVR. Love it. I was also already set up to reload so the cpr for a big bore is much less than buying factory ammo. The big bores are a love/hate thing. I'm good for about 15 rounds then my arms and wrists are spent and it's time to stop. NOTHING puts a bigger smile on your face then when you just fired a 460/500 S&W. YMMV

But with the 460 you can plink with 45LC or 454 Casull if you want to. 45LC rounds can be bought for a lot less than the average of the $2.50 500 round cost. I would consider a trade for a 460 before I would a 500 for that reason.

No, I use my R8 much more often than a I would use a Model 500. I agree they are close enough price-wise, but I would get more enjoyment out of the R8.
