Default 629-2 vs 69

Had my 629-2 mountain revolver at the range today with my 69 for some back to back comparison. The x frame grips are a real bonus, that was made apparent at the first shot. Recoil was slightly sharper with the 69 but not by very much. Of note the ammunition was magtech 240's, Remington 180's (big muzzle flash & noticeably sharper recoil in both) & sig sauer 240's.

Last note was out of the gate I had 5 light strikes with the 69. 4 on DA, 1 on SA. Every one of those later fired with at least 1 more SA try. First time it has ever done that. So, since I have wanted to get the master revolver action package done...I came home & called S&W for the warranty service & told them when they are done to send it across the hall to the Performance Center next. I'll report the results when it comes back.

Thanks for the range report!

My experience was slightly different, with the 69 shooting just a bit softer than the M29 MG. I attributed that to the lower bore axis, along with the x-frame grips.

I hope the factory sorts out your 69 quickly.

I noticed the difference on the grips immediately, man what a difference for the good. I think I'm more excited to see what the PC does for it.

I seen you ordered the x frame grips......

It didn't work out for me in a 6" 629. The improvement was marginal for me. And my index finger reach was less.....so, I went with the normal smith/hogue rubber (which I use in all) learned to live with it. Reduced loads helped too.

I was hoping to try those Remington 180's in my 6 1/2" 629's today with the x frame grips also, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen today

Just talked to S&W. The warranty work is done & it's now at the PC side of the house. They replaced the firing pin & tightened the strain screw. I had never touched either of those parts.

Several years ago I bought a used 29-10 , 6" . Right from the beginning I had light primer strikes , misfires in SA and Da . I sent it back to the factory . They asked if I used reloads and I replied yes . Then sent it back with a note to only shoot factory . I knew that was not the answer . I decided to remove the firing pin and clean it and the well it sits in . That solved my problem , It's really a simple fix . You can go to youtube and watch it being done too .
It sounds like his needed a new pin . Glad they took care of him .

Mine had never had a reload put thru it. I'm not worried about it, I am anxious to see the PC work though.

Love my 69 and I shoot nothing but reloads in it. 240-250grain SWCs and a healthy dose of Power Pistol.

Watch the strain screw, like all revolvers the screws will shoot loose. Found a 624 the other day with the yoke screw ready to fall out. Gun has been locked in a safe for almost a year. Check the screws!

My 69 eats handloads exclusively. After going through a bunch of loads from the Handloader issue on the 69 and lightweight S&W 44's, I pretty much settled on one Power Pistol load for about 90% of my shooting and one of the 240 gr JHP 2400 loads when I want to remind myself why I shoot the power pistol load...

How's your flame cutting? Mine cut in pretty quick compared to other 44's, but that's the only revolver I use Power Pistol in. All my longer barreled 44's see mostly H110 or 2400. The cutting isn't bad at all, just quicker than I expected.

I wonder if that's what happened to me, but I wanted the PC work anyway so it was a reason for me to send it in.

The last time out I had been shooting some full magnum loads out of it.
