Talo 686 3"
Hi all, this is my 3" 686 Talo which I have noticed is pretty popular around this site. Along with it is my JW O'Rourke pancake holster. After 1000 rounds I am about to make some changes, I ordered a spring kit from Brownell with the stock mainspring, I hope to lighten up the double action a bit and will likely polish the internals while I have it open. I also ordered a Dawson fiber optic sight, I went with the .100 blade width over the stock .120 which I HOPE was the right choice. Anyone care to opine? With the 3" barrel the sight picture was very tight and I felt it obscured the target. This could be a product of the blade too, I will see and make the correction if needed. They didn't offer a .110 in the .260 height which I would have preferred, I think. Anyway, great information on this sight, and I look forward to more as I get deeper into the S&W Marquee.

That is a beautiful revolver! I don't have any opinions for you since I am in the market for the same model as you have there. Other than the modifications you are thinking about making, how do you like the gun?

I picked one up used a couples years ago -- it was like new. Great gun. I put some Ahrends grips on it though - the large finger grooves in the Talo grips just do not correspond to my hand at all. Kind of shame -- the grips are real nice looking.

I looked and looked for the Talo, but finally just bought the 686+. Congratulations. I really like the non-fluted cylinder, but too late for now.

Bought the same gun and O'Rourke leather in 2012 :
Later added Spegel grips and "the plug":

Those Spegal grips are beautiful, if I were to change mine those are what I would go for as I like the balance (and look) with the short barrel.
@Druggist50, I can't say enough good about it. If you haven't seen them, watch the Hickok45 videos on youtube he did on them. He did a 3 parter and was my inspiration for this package.

I picked mine up a couple months ago off gunbroker for a decent price. Installed a set of meprolight night sights, miculek spring kit, and a Hogue bantam grip. I know a lot of people prefer wood to rubber, but the bantam grip was made for CCW. Same ergo dynamics as the full size, but shorter. I still like my 5" 686 Talo, but that 3" is enamoring.

Nice gun.
I believe when I replaced the front sight on my 3" 686+ with a Dawson Precision F.O. the OEM front sight I replaced measured at .270" tall and I selected the .110" width. Worked out perfectly.

Interesting, thank you for the input. I have a digital caliper and measured my blade out at .260 x .120. If there is any height issues with the new one, I can likely take it out with the rear adjustment, and if I find too much light with the .100, I'll swap it out with the size you mention.

You're very welcome. I used a digital caliper as well and tried to get the most accurate reading I could. In any case, once installed I was able to dial it in to my satisfaction as I am sure you will as well.
If I recall correctly, in a prior thread where this was discussed one or more members mentioned that S&W had used front sights with different heights on the same firearm...so this may (or may not) account for any difference.

Also good to know. I am digging the tenor of this site, lots of users making lots of good posts.
My new parts from Brownell's and Dawson just shipped, hopefully I'll get this dialed in by next weekend for some weekend grip time around the home range.

I put the new FO front on yesterday along with the Wolf spring kit. I went with the stock weight mainspring and 14# rebound spring. While it was apart I lightly stoned and polished the trigger, hammer, bolt plunger and rebound spring slide. I am happy with the results, I might like the double action a bit lighter, but not at the sacrifice of a lighter single action which is probably about 4+# now.
Anyway, I am off to the home range to experience the beauty that is S&W wheel guns.

I like the Talo version. Just don't care for anything with a Hillary hole...

With the spring mods it's a really super shooter, and it being my first S&W, the whole issue with the locks that everyone has doesn't bother me in the slightest.
