The One That Got Away
Couple years back, I bought a SW R8 (tactical 8 round .357/.38 revolver). Probably the nicest factory action on any gun I've ever owned. Just a joy to shoot...even with the lawyer lock. I had it at the range one day -- the range director reeeally took a liking to it and offered me $200.00 MORE than what I'd paid for it. I took him up on it. I've regretted selling that gun many times since. Curious what gun others regret having sold . . . ? Every story will be read with interest, whether it was a Korth or a Hi-Point.

I had a blue M581 with the 4" barrel. Local gunsmith in Minneapolis installed a Bomar rib and completed an action job. The sight picture was superb (Oh, to have young eyes again!). It was amazing for its accuracy with 38 Spl light target loads to full power 357 magnum loads. No recoil and very steady muzzle.
My neighbor in Georgia wanted that revolver more than me -- about $300 more than I had in it. Stupidly, I took his money.

1905 4th change in 32-20. I bought it from a pawn shop for $175 put 50 rounds through it then traded it for a sks. I had a soft spot for sks' because it was the first firearm i purchased 2 weeks after turning 18 and someone broke into my house and stole it. I dont even have pictures of the revolver anymore because i uploaded them to photobucket, then forgot my password then got locked out of my yahoo email account so ill never see them again 😢

Fellow ran an add a few years ago, offering a Model 29-2, 4" barrel, the three T's, and 37 rounds of magnum ammo (two 20 round boxes) for trade for a Glock 19. He said he'd been offered several other guns, worth more money, but he really wanted a Glock 19.
So, I traded him a Glock 19, and $200.00 cash (I figured the Glock to be worth maybe...$350.00 on a trade?) for that like new, Model 29. Beautiful gun.
Alas, a year of so later, I lost my job, and suffered a "personal economic downturn" and had to sell it.

Had an Interarms Walther PPK/s that ran smooth as silk. Wanted a larger caliber so I sold it to move up a notch. Should have kept it and just bought another gun. I have since bought the S&W version of the PPK/s.... Just not the same....

Had a Colt Woodsman issue 3, 6" I bought used in 1971. Sold it to a fellow worker for $75. Regretted it the next day. Fast forward to 2001. Hadn't seen the guy I sold it to since 1971. Conversation got around to the Colt. Asked if I'd be interested in buying it back as his wife didn't like having it in the house. How much? Said he'd sell it back to me for what he paid AND he threw in a 500 round brick of .22 's. No, it's not leaving again.

Sig Sauer P220. My friend fell in love with it at the range. It was a tack driver. He also ended up with my Colt SP1..same reason. I guess what are friends for?

When I was young (in my 20's) and stupid, I got into guns and I'll bet I rotated guns every 8-12 months because I got tired of them and wanted different ones. If I knew then what I know now....
Four I regret getting rid of: a 2" model 15 that I sold, 6 months after I bought it off a fellow officer for $200, so I could get a Ruger P95; a 4" model 19 that I traded for a Winchester 1300 twelve gauge (both of these deals were in the mid 90's when you couldn't give Smiths away), and the Ruger P95 and a 4" model 67 no dash with combat stocks and stainless rear sight, both of which I sold for stupid cheap in 2000 when, for some cosmic reason, I completely lost interest in any and all things firearm related.

I just got an R8 a couple days ago. I don't think I'd sell it for extra $$ but Grabagun is selling them for around $1049, so getting another wouldn't be a problem. An interesting sidenote, my buddy and I ordered R8's within a week of each other. With both guns, when you pushed the cylinder release, the flag would raise by the hammer. High enough to read "locked" on it. First thing I did was remove the flag! Love this gun.
Sorry for the thread drift...
I did sell a Dan Wesson 7445 Supermag that was just beautiful. Made a lot of money on it but I sure miss that gun.

I can't say I regret any guns that I've sold or traded off. As a fairly new enthusiast, it's been a fun process to fine-tune what works best for me as my experience somewhat changes my tastes. The "ones that got away" I regret most are the ones I didn't purchase when I had the chance. Very recently, while STILL waiting for the NM 66 2.75" to be released by S&W, I passed up a very pristine 3" Model 27. The price was amazing, and boy, these just don't come up very often. I was so certain the new 66 snubby was just around the corner that I didn't make a move. UGH.

I have never sold a gun. The ones that got away from me were the ones that I did buy because I was tired of sleeping on the couch. At one gun show, I do not remember how long ago, I saw three billboard 1911s when they first came out for $800 each, and maybe a year ago, I saw a Talo Model 686 with a 6.25"(?) barrel at Collector's Firearms for $749. I bought the R8 instead and only regret it because the R8 is now easier to find. I should have bought both. Then there are the rifles...

I sold a Colt 1905 .45 auto that I inherited to pay for my new wife's dental care. That was 38 yrs ago. I would fix her teeth instead now...just kidding...I guess. There have been trades that I regretted but what is done is beyond change so I tend to just forget them and move on.

I would soon be contacting a Suicide Prevention Hotline if I started listing the classics I've traded away or sold in the past. Thankfully, I kept one old friend, a 66-3 snubby, and added a 686-4, 60 snubby, and 63 Kit Gun.

My first pistol was a Sig p226 9mm . Immediately; shortly after I purchased my first revolver.
She kept them in the divorce. You know how things are. Did that to keep my first 1911; the 3rd gun I ever purchased and still own today. That was the compromise.
Those two that got away I think of as children. Weird huh.

My first center fire double action revolver; a 6" 686 that I bought new in 1987. My brother just had to have that gun. After a few years of him badgering me I finally sold it to him in '93 with the proviso that if he ever decided to go sell it give me first chance to buy it back... heck no he would never sell it!
We live over a thousand miles apart and rarely see each other anymore, anyway, around 2000 or 2001 we were talking about guns during one of our ur rare visits, asked about my 686... huh? Barely remembered it, traded it for something but couldn't remember when....

I sold a very clean 3rd issue Colt Detective Special. On the bright side I got a S&W 1911Sc, and I doubled my money on the Dick Special.

I can't say I regret selling it, because I used the money to pay for my dog's cancer treatment, but I really miss my Merkel 147e 20ga side by side.

A BNIB .40 4046 TSW. Department received in exchange for a cracked frame 4043. I bought it for $250. Later Raffled it for a partner who was suspended w/o pay. Suspension was later overturned but the damage was done.

Only guns that got away was because I didn't buy them. Like a Model marked 23 .38 "Outdoorsman" in a pawn shop, Apopka Florida about 15 years ago. It was only 85% condition but certainly a bargain at $150. Didn't know then what I've learned here since. Joe

Don't really regret any but would be way ahead money wise if I had kept some.
2 H&K 91's
H&K 93
S&W 14 NIB
S&W Model 37 3" nickel
I better stop now or I will start having regrets

Did get lucky one time. Traded a Colt Lawman MK3 my dad got me & a S&W very used Model 17 for a Colt Python at a favorite pawn shop. The Lawman sold in about 2 days & I regretted getting rid of it for along time. Then one day went into the shop to look around & there it was on the shelf back for sale & for less than I got for it in trade. Took about 2 seconds to get money out of my wallet & it will never leave again

I have two regrets. Oldest was the Ruger Bearcat I bought new in ~1970, a nifty little gun that years later got something wrong with it. I think it was a bit out of time and would fully cock before the cylinder locked up - and my recollection of Ruger's response was that they didn't work on 'em any more, so I sold it. But I still like the platform, handled quite a few of the new models at a gun show last weekend, and almost bought one of the stainless birdshead grip models. Maybe next time.
Second was a Ruger Security Six that I traded for a GP-100 because I wanted stainless instead of blue, a 4" barrel instead of 6", and I was intrigued by the crane lockup mechanism. But I never warmed up to the GP, and could never shoot it as well as the Six - it became one of the few guns I have been glad to get rid of. I'd probably still be shooting the Six, although if I'd kept it I probably wouldn't have the 3" 65 that I got a few years ago, so . . .

The GP is a good gun but apparently not that good...I've owned and sold two of them. But I am intrigued with the new GP in .44 special.....hmmm

Well, I have to admit that I'm with you on the 44. I basically shot out my wrists with heavy loads in a Super Blackhawk back when I was young(er) and stupid(er), and have intentionally imposed 9mm/38 +P as my upper limit on handguns now. But I've read so much about the joys of 44 Special over the years that the new GP is a sore temptation.

Back in the late 70's, I was lucky enough to acquire an original
Service Model Ace 22lr. Pristine condition, so I traded 3 to 1
for it. SN was in the 13,xxx range. I took it to a gun show and
the flash of C notes convinced me to let it go. Over the past 45
years or so, that is the one that I regret letting get away the
most

S&W Model 29 "sigh"
Back in the 90s, while stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, I traded something, I think as 645 for a PRISTINE Model 29, six-inch. I don't think I've ever seen bluing so deep. I took it to a small range once, a father and his son were plinking with a .22 rifle. I let lose with this hand cannon and WOW!!! I ended up trading it or selling it because I wasn't really into revolvers, I liked "tactical" things...REGRET. I don't know what generation it was, I really didn't "collect" at that point, but it was gorgeous. Seeing what they are going for now...ugh. Then there is my dad who sold his pristine 4" Colt Diamondback .38 for a fraction of what they are going for now.

Three come to mind.........................
3" 586........ for a PC Shorty 9
4" 581........ IIRC for a 4" 66-nuttin with stainless sights or a 4" 66-1
4505...... for a used Sig 226 which got traded for a 4566
.................all in as near as nib as you could get. I still have the guns I got in those trades, but wish I'd held on to those three.

Many many guns have come and gone with no regrets other than selling my 10-6 that I carried for 20 years.I still had the grips, box, papers, wax paper and cleaning kit from 1966 that I handed over with the gun to a young range officer/shooter that promised to give it a good home.

Sold my Python for cash and a new bi centennial security six ruger. Dumb move. I'll replace it someday.
Traded my colt gov series 70 in nickel for a Redhawk in 44 mag when they were first offered. Replaced it recently.
Traded in my ruger mkI 22/pistol. Replaced it recently.
I don't part with nothing anymore.

I went through a divorce last year and hit a financial hurdle with having to pay for attorney fees and all the expenses that came with it. Had to sell a few of my revolvers and a few rifles. In that batch were a S&W mod. 67, 586, and 66 (snub). I miss them all. Someday I'll find replacements, but I know I will be paying more than what I did back when I first bought them.

A Springfield 1903A4 sniper rifle for $600 at Ron Petersons guns in Albuquerque NM. I don't know if someone took the time to modify into in the sniper variant but that rifle was amazing. Beautiful wood but not restocked, tight but smooth action scope and mounts looked absolutely legitimate. Ugh kick myself to this day I didn't slap my CC down and bought it.

S&W 586 4". Brushed Gray Non Glare Finish. Polished Internals. Spring Kit (Setup for Bowling Pin). Traded for a Ruger #1 and Scope. With age comes perspective. I would rather have that than the semi autos acquired since then.

The 3 Colt Pythons I had in the late 70's. Had a 2.5", 4", and the 6".
Also had a custom made rifle on a 98 Mauser action chambered in 22-250 with a 20X Unertl scope, the grain in the wood was amazing. It's the second from the top. Pic is tiny, but you can kinda see it.

Too many to list. Way too many. I finally learned in 2006 to stop swapping, selling, and trading.
For those starting, heed my warning, the latest and greatest many times ain't what it is cracked up to be. I have substituted some but it is not the same.

I don't sell many guns because I almost always end up regretting it. The one that stands out was one of the cheapest guns I ever bought. A Tokarev. I bought it from a friend who sold it to me cheap because at the time I was low on funds and needed a better carry gun. I carried that gun with me for several years. Then I got more money and bought more guns. The thing about the Tokarev was that at the time finding ammo for it was getting almost impossible. I bought all I found and it wasn't enough. So someone wanted to trade stuff for a motorcycle. Like a dummy I threw that gun in the trade. I've regretted it ever since. Of course as soon as I sold it ammo became available again. Lots of it. I could buy another one but not for what I paid for that one.
But the gun that keeps me up nights and makes me wish I had bought it and shot myself with it for being so stupid was a Remington 40X with a Timney trigger, a Shilen barrel, a tuner and a custom made benchrest stock. And it was built by a world famous gunsmith for the super shooters. For $1000. I know, I know. How could I ever let something like that go? It happened because I got the offer right after Christmas. It came from a guy who was essentially my competition sponsor. He gave me great deals on a lot of stuff. But at the moment he offered me that spectacular rifle I was broke. I had spent my last dime on Christmas. I knew it wouldn't be long before I got the money so I didn't want to borrow it. I wish I had though. Because by the time I got the money the rifle was gone. The guy had 5 of them actually and all of them were gone except the one he was using. The guy was a record setting shooter BTW. He did some truly amazing things. And I was his protege until basically he realized I just didn't have enough money to compete on the circuit. I almost cried when I found out I couldn't get one of those rifles. Seriously. Oh well. That's how it goes.
I did take the money I had for that rifle and I bought a Savage 12 LRPV .223 and that thing is one special rifle itself. So that eased the pain some. But still. A deal like that only comes along once in a lifetime. That was easily a $3000 rifle and he asked me a paltry $1000 for it.
Dang you had to ask this question didn't you? Now I'm all depressed again. I think I'll go shoot that LRPV. Just so you know I can shoot a 5" group at 500 yards with that rifle a lot of the time depending on the wind mostly. I've shot groups as small as 1" at 500 yards with it. Only one of those though. Still it was a pretty good consolation prize. But first prize would have been better.

[QUOTE=George28;139513231]Couple years back, I bought a SW R8 (tactical 8 round .357/.38 revolver).
