Default New 686

So, I am 81 years old and just ordered a new 686 deluxe from Buds gun shop.
I really like my revolvers as I am getting older.
Thoughts?
Am I going crazy?

Mr. Smokeyloads,
You are not crazy at all. You are a very wise man. The 686 is possibly the best handgun you can buy. I have two and will probably get another one. Maybe that makes me crazy but I like it. Welcome to the forum!

You're never too old for a new gun, especially a new 686.

I'm 75, and have had my 686 for 21 years. I target shoot .38 special wadcutters with it about twice a week. At 25 yds I can stay within the 8 ring.

I will be 70 this year. So I gave myself a 686 for Christmas.
Now I have six revolvers, and carry a 60-15 with .357 MAG.

We may be crazy, but we earned it.

A 4" 686 was my first gun purchase. Hubby wondered about my sanity, until he shot it.

Don't forget to stop back and give us your first impressions.

Enjoy your new "L", and welcome to the forum.

You're not crazy, but you should try a S&W revolver that's as old as you are. Older really is better when it comes to their guns.

Thanks guys, gals, good to know I'm not alone
At our range we are having revolver only steel plate shoot this summer. I have Rugers I can use but I wanted the 686 plus, will need the extra round to try and stay in the middle of the pack.
Always wanted a Smith, very hard to find the older "dash" models in my area (Minn.) if you do find them for sale, the price is close to a new model.
Can't wait to pick it up at my FFL, will let you know when that happens Will need to work up a load for this sweetheart.
Thanks for all your replys, good to be in the family.

Welcome! I see it took you a while t find us. No matter, your never to old to treat yourself to something nice. In this case you can enjoy it for your time and then leave it to someone special down the road.

p.s. I know your new here but if your looking for anyone to talk you out of a new revolver, your definitely on the wrong forum :-)

Not crazy at all. I'm 37 and just picked up this 686+ custom fit with a 9mm cylinder from a fellow forum member here. My first revolver. I can shoot three calibers out of it. Thing feels amazing. Can't wait to shoot it. I stayed away from the 9mm Performance models because I thought they looked ugly and unfinished and I wanted a shorter barrel and the option to shoot larger calibers. The single action on this thing is insane. I love semi's and own several Sigs, Glocks, and HKs, but there's something about the feel and cylinder action with a revolver. I'm hooked.

The 686 in its numerous variations is probably the most popular gun on this modern revolver part of the forum. You will like it. They operate well out of the box (almost all the time, I have heard of warranty work required sometimes) and are put together solid. I like mine.

Smokeyloads:

Try using coated cast bullets like Bayou, Ibejiheads or Rogers PC instead of your lubed cast bullets - you'll have to change that "smokey" moniker, but that's a small price to pay for being able to breath better and being free of the atomized airborne lead.

Good luck with your new acquisition.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Pizza Bob,
Ha, I have been casting for the better part of 65 years and started powder coating 3 years ago, the only way to go, no more leading issues and clean as can be, gone is the nasty lube in my bottom feeders.
So I guess the Smokeyloads handle is out dated.
Although I had the leading in my cast bullets down to nothing before the PC.
The PCing is opening up a whole new area in the pistol shooting, and some guys are having good results in the long guns also.
These are fun times to be a reloader for sure.
Regards, Smokeyloads.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, floydster. I AM 75 YEARS OLD, AND THE OLDER I GET, THE MORE ENAMORED OF MY REVOLVERS I BECOME. THEIR SIMPLICITY, AND THE BEAUTY OF THE WOOD AND STEEL, PLEASES MY EYE. I ALSO LOVE THE ACCURACY OF SLOW, SINGLE ACTION FIRE.....

I HAVE S&W REVOLVERS IN CALIBERS FROM .22LR TO .45 COLT. BELOW IS A PIC OF SOME OF THEM. I AM A GREAT FAN OF THE M686, AND I APPLAUD YOUR CHOICE FROM BUD'S.......

I HAVE A 2 1/2" NO DASH, CONVERTED TO A 7 SHOT BY S&W, A 686+ MOUNTAIN GUN, AND AN 8 3/8", NO DASH, THAT CARRIES AN ULTRA DOT, RED DOT SIGHT, AND SHOOTS LIKE A RIFLE. BELOW ARE MY 3 MOUNTAIN GUNS. THE 686 IS ON THE EXTREME LEFT. THE 2 1/2" WAS WORKED OVER BY DENNY @ THE SAND BURR GUN RANCH. THE ACTION IS SLICKER THAN SNOTS. MASSAD AYOOB CLAIMS THAT DENNY IS THE VERY BEST S&W GUNSMITH, WORKING TODAY......

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR 686, AND DON'T FORGET A RANGE REPORT, AND SOME PICS. WE LOVE GUN PORN......
