Default Gun Show Snag

Went to the gun show today with the intentions of picking up my 1st 44 magnum. (Smith of course) Only 1, a Model 69. Did not do anything for me personally. So, shortly after I walked in, I had spotted a 2.5" 19-5, and the same in a 66-2. Were both at asking of $800. The 3rd time through, I asked the seller if he would take $725 for the 66. He said he just bought more guns, and could use some money, YES!
I have never owned a 19, or a 66. Wanted 1 even though not a .44. Hardly any wear. I would guess it was fired very little. How badly did I do at $725? No box, just gun. Serial# AEK83xx. Bob

If you're happy with the gun and can still pay the rent this month, you did fine. 10 guys will tell you they found one at a higher price and 7 will say they only paid XX for theirs. Price seems fair retail.

Nice one Bob! I have a dash 2 as well. One of the best carry revolvers S&W made. I think you did good on the price seeing how the prices have been rising on the snub nose k frames.
Now don't you go and lay that one on rocks for taking pictures!!

You just cannot beat the classic looks of a S&W revolver, they're works of art. When I go to the range w/one of mine I get looks from the younger guys shooting their plastic wonders. I'm not knocking them, I own a Glock 17 & an LCP, but like my old man guns better.

Very nice!

At a gun show last weekend, I found one of my grail guns, a "minty" 686-3 2.5" with original combats. I've seen a few others, but they were asking $900-$1100 without the combats, $1300+ with. I stumble across this beauty for $950. Talked him down to $900 with combats, $750 without; I agreed to the former and damn near tore my rotator cuff reaching for my wallet.

I am sure it's been fired, but very little. There's no end shake and a barely visible turn line. Not sure where others are finding these critters for $500-$650, but they don't live in my world. It has become good friends with my 66-1 2.5" and 627 snubbie.

Terrible deal. I'll send you $600 and you send me the gun to alleviate all that ails you in the ways of the 66.

I could have bought a 686, 2.5" cheaper, but it had the I.L. Opted not to even though it was nice. Bob

686-3 : Paid not much less, but 4 years ago. I'd say you got a nice deal for a great revolver

Enjoy it!

I was lucky enough to buy one of those $500 686 snubbies about four years ago. The owner wanted some cash to buy some black plastic 9mm semi-auto. He even threw in a Bianchi holster, two speed loaders and a speedloader pouch.

Went to a local gun show today, the prices of S&W revolvers are skyrocketing around here I looked really hard and couldn't find any model 66s to be had at any price, So to answer the OP's Question, I don't know if you got a good price or not, at least you got one.

Here is the deal. That money would have been spent one way or the other. Putting it towards that beautiful Model 66-2 means you've got something to show for it and chances are you'll be able to regroup your money or more if or when you need it.

There were very few Smith revolvers at the show. Sure they had J frames lying around. It has been a while that I have seen less. Bob

I knew it wouldn't take long for one of the "I paid $500 for mine" characters to come along.
I hope your friend that felt the need to drop $500 on a plastic gun has seen his mistake.

I am thinking about selling the combats (like the looks, but not the feel), which would get me in the $600-$650 club. I am an accumulator more than a collector. Might as well get em to someone that needs em.

Yep, same here. A 686 with IL wasn't an option.

Can anyone tell me the year of release for serial # BFU3371 - I am thinking 88-89.

Thanks,

Lou

The gun had Hogue rubber grips when I bought it. The current stocks are from Altamont. They are a non-catalog item that were made for TALO distributers.

I just noticed that the OPs mod. 66 appears to have a case hardened hammer. Perhaps it is the photograph lighting. Regardless, a 2.5" model 66 is a great snag.

It does. Wondered about it myself. It is a shooter, and that is OK. Trigger feels real good on it. Bob
