Default 624

The more I shoot this 624 the more I like it. I've been loading some mild loads with extreme 240 gr bullets. Like the way these
shoot. I was reading about the recall info. Mine is a no- 4 in in
stainless. I did get the box with mine with the red circle C with mine. Here is a pic of my 44. HDHIC aka Cliff

The 4" 624 is the best shooting one of the 3 lengths made IMHO.
For some reason my 6.5" was just not made well and only shoots one particular load.
The 4" shoots just about everything well if you take into account the huge cylinder throats (up to .433").
The 200 grain Gold Dot is a nice soft plated bullet that bumps up well with 6 grains of Unique or Universal.
The Rainier 240's also have a slightly hollow base and do well in the special.

That can not be a 624.
624's were made in 1985 and had neither pinned barrels nor recessed chambers.
Judging by the 2 snubs the top gun is not even an N frame.
K frame?
Those are very nice vintage S&W's!
Just not a 624.
The very first 629's were some of the only stainless P&R N frames S&W ever made.

Neat 624's

Was on the lookout for a 4" 624 many years ago but ended up with a close copy:

I'm with Engine 49 on this.
The 69, now that the crown has been cleaned up, is a much better 44 Special than any of my 3 624s.
Pretty sure it has to do with oversize cylinder mouths.
The 6-1/2" is the worst of the lot.
And, my 696 is more accurate than any of the 624s.

I prefer the increased utility of the 29/629, but love the look of the 24/624's tapered barrel. I sure miss my 629 Mountain Gun.

I agree on all counts!
My next S&W may be a 69 although I do have a 4" 629-2 MR.
It has big throats too. Maybe I can teach it to sing opera.
The 696 has .431" throats and the 696-1 I have finally made it down to .429" throats and shoots everything very well.
The 396-1 also has "normal" throats at .4295"
Most of my cast bullets are sized large for those big throated revolvers almost everyone turned out for decades (and the 444).
Ruger, S&W, Charter all did it.
Maybe not as bad as the .45 situation since 1873 but almost!
Some of the 44 carbines have .431 bores as well.
Why I have never learned to my satisfaction as the jacketed bullet makers did not follow suit.
Some of the new "solid" copper bullets like the Barnes & C.O.P (General Bullet) are actually smaller than .429".
COP's first effort at a cheap alternative to the Barnes was .428" and did not shoot worth a darn at all.
They later increased them to .429 but the damage may have already been done as Midway dropped them (and the ammo COP sold).
I have some of the Lehigh Defense solids on the way and will be interested in their dimensions.
At least they have driving bands unlike the Barnes & Swift A-Frames that could use them.

Anyone interested in experimenting with a larger than normal jacketed 44 may want to try the Zero JSP.
These are sized .431" and are one of the only oversized jacketed 44's I have ever seen.
Roze Distribution: 44 Mag 240 Gr JSP (1,000)
They make you buy 1000 (shipped as 2 boxes of 500) and are currently out of stock.
I would be willing to work something out for one of those boxes as I will never shoot all 1000 of them.
PM me. It will be my cost + shipping.

Read the tech tip in the pdf below from Speer about the sizes of cast and jacketed bullets.
They obviously got the sizing die dimension wrong but I have never before seen a manufacturer
claim factory lead bullets can be as much as .003" larger than jacketed.
I was unable to just cut and paste the relevant text.

I had Penn run me a special batch of oversize cast bullets for those oversize cylinders.
Helped a lot.

Yeah Bob's a good guy to deal with and a forum member here.
I can't wait for them to get their polymer coating program together and ship me the Thunderheads I want.

Me too.

My simple solution: buy a 629 cyl and install or have installed in your 624. Also need to shorten barrel ext thru the frame and recut forcing cone, therefore, no going back. Cyls are easier to buy and cheaper than 44 tapered barrels.

Some just lengthen the chambers of the 44 Spl cyl and stick with factory length bullets.

IMHO it would be easier and a lot less trouble to just buy a mountain gun.
That way you could have both!
There are currently 5 of them up on Gun Borker in 44 and a couple more in 45.
I think many folks find they dislike the recoil and intense muzzle rise.
Happens a lot with the 44 mag.
My MR is the only gun I felt necessary to have ported.
Glad I did.
I would not trust the heat treating of a 624 to be the same as the magnum frames.
Both look nice and handle well for me with Herrett Jordan Trooper grips:
