Until this example was advertised locally i was unaware that smith had attached their name to anything of this sort. I'm well aware that is was actually made by UMBREX in Germany and is licensed by S&W hence the logo. This example is an excellent copy of the Chiefs special and has been well engineered and crafted. Anyway i was glad to add it to my collection.

I've seen these advertised on some of the larger sporting goods websites. Guess you don't need the IL to protect from firing blanks (although they are highly dangerous at short range).

That's an interesting looking revolver; I wonder if you can ammo for it here in the US? I lived in Germany for many years and remember that quite a few shops sold those, and that they didn't require special licensing like full-up firearms required. It must be a personal import because I've never seen the blank-firing versions for sale here ... I think it's Umarex instead of Umbrex by the way.

It's basically an elaborate toy.

Extremely popular in Japan where virtually all gun ownership is forbidden. Many handguns and nearly any military rifle you can imagine is made as these highly accurate mostly metal replicas.

They used to be used extensively to start races, both track and swimming.
Go back and watch some Olympics from the 60's.
My swim coach had both 22 and 32 blank revolvers.
We wanted to steal them in the worst way but he knew this and held them close
A lot of them were tip-up single shots.
I have to tell you at an indoor pool when that 32 (or 38) blank goes off you start involuntarily!
Now they use a wimpy electronic beeper.
I became a certified official and always turn the starting beeper up to max.
Still not the same. The kids will never know.
The only blank gun I have is the 10 ga Winchester cannon used to start yacht races.
The Chinese still make the black powder blanks for these and they are loud and will fill up a parking lot with smoke.

Most of the ones I have seen and used are basically junk and look it.

UMAREX is the correct spelling. Regardless of what some may think this appears to have been quality made. I also can't imagine S&W allowing their name to be used with a product of inferior quality. It has the weight and feel of a real S&W snubbie and it's hard to tell it's a blank gun without actually inspecting it. It takes 9mm revolver blanks which are loaded by both Magtech and RWS. However I cannot find any currently for sale. Does anyone know a source?

Italiansport or Fishinfool - do either of you know if these blanks will work in a .38 Spec revolver? They're centerfire & kinda look like .38 Short Colt blanks ... Also - do you have an online source for the revolvers themselves? I went to Umarex' site with no luck - airsoft or BB only from what I could determine ...

These are quite common, I have bought a couple replicas for use in theatrical production, though I tend to stick with the 22 calibler guns for noise concerns. Interestingly enough, some of the manufacturers that sell replica pistols make alternate versions designed to fire small pepper spray, and cs tear gas cartridges. I have even read about versions that can fire rubber projectiles as well. The guns available in the US typically have solid barrels with gas ports located elsewhere. A Walther PP replica I have around somewhere, chambered for 9mm PAK, had a gas relief port on top of the chamber, so every shot fired shoots a flame out of the top of the gun. Also interestingly, I recall reading that England had quite an illegal gun problem with replica Russian made Makarovs being converted to accept real ammuntion, as the replicas apparently were made of the same steels and same specs as the real ones, just with solid barrels.
