Default Model 17-6 questions

My LGS has a 17-6 4 inch for sale. No box, some holster wear at the muzzle, has been shot, turn line very present. Finish is very good, with good shape magna stocks. They want $600 plus tax & paperwork, making it about $650. I like the revolver, but question the price. It is the first 4" 17 I have ever seen. How common are they? Ser# BEB01XX. Thanks, Ken

Not real common in 4" and price sounds ok - but always try to dicker it down by pointing out the wear, etc. After all, it is a used gun!

Does it have the full underlug barrel, target hammer, and target trigger? If so, that's a good price provided the mechanics are OK. Original grips should be Combats, I think (If its a full lugged barrel). Post pics when you get it.

Default 17-6

No full lug bbl, or combats. Magna grips, and what looks like a non tapered heavy bbl. 4" bbl.

I would be a buyer at that price. Around here it wouldn't last long.

The gun likely shipped in......

August of 1989.

The product code for the 4-inch was 100508, same number for the full-lug and traditional barrels. I think the Magna stocks were standard on the TB guns.

Without the box, and showing some superficial wear, I think something around $600 OTD would be fair.

I pick up a 4-inch -6 just like it last year on this forum. It was used, but well kept, and showed only a faint turn line. No box.

I payed less than $550 shipped. And that was after it sat for a week with no takers. (New member and blurry pictures).

You will see a lot more 617s than 17-5,6 4". I have a 17-5 4" like the gun you describe and a 17-6 4" full lug. They are both excellent guns, as good as any K-22 I own.

The early 17-6's may have had the heavy 17-5 barrel on it. The 17-6 should have the full lug barrel on it but S&W used up the old barrels first. The model 17-5 replaced the model 18. I once had a 17-6 with a non-full lug heavy barrel on it. Nice gun not often seen with the 4" barrel. Very surprised it's not priced at 750.00 or so. Need some pics if you get it then a range report. I wouldn't question that price.
Basically a heavy barrel Model 18,and a fairly scarce variant.( I owned a 17-7 four incher/full lug gun for many years. All four inchers are great.)
Any nice K frame 22 is worth that much.
