New member getting a new 627 PRO with some questions
Greetings everyone from the left coast I am proud to say that I finally pulled the trigger on a Performance Center Pro Series 627 178014. I have been eye balling it online for along time and I figured I should buy before its off the stupid approved handgun roster in Comiefornia.
It is the first Smith I have bought myself but I own a 28-2 with original box and price tag( to bad they do not still cost $179) and a model 29 classic both inherited from my grandfather.
Anyway I have a couple questions about my new purchase. Is the pistol round or square butt I love nice wood grips so i plan on replacing the rubber grips it comes with. I have been looking at Badger and Altamont grips any other suggestions for a source of nice wood grips ?
Last question is this pistol says interchangeable front sight that is the DX style correct? I would like to put on a fiber optic front sight will these work and what is the correct height ?
HIVIZ(R) Shooting Systems | Manufacturing high quality firearm fiber optic and tritium sights >> Front Sight for S&W Revolver with DX style Interchangeable Sight
Thanks for any help with my questions.

Congrats on a really nice revolver, if I do say so myself! I just bought one in the commie state, and thought I could pick it up but alas, not til the 27th as a bought a new gun last month, also.
I'll let the experts answer your questions, but I can't wait to get mine to the range, clean it, and then just enjoy looking at it!
Cheers!

It's a round butt gun. Not sure about the front sight style. I put a Burris Fastfire III on mine. I love it!

Yes, the linked site is correct for your 627 Pro 4" or PC 5" revolver. The correct stock height sight is the .250 one. Another sight blade that might do you well is the S&W gold bead front sight for $20.99 which I bought for my 627 Pro and absolutely love. Another gold bead front sight choice is the SDM Fabricating one right here for $57.99 that uses an actual gold bead instead of a brass bead on the sight. The .250 model would be the one you want for 50 yard/meter shooting.

Culina and Ahrend's are two other grip makers you might consider looking at as well for fine, custom wood. Many members here have lots of sets by both, I have a set of Ahrends and am very impressed with them. Culina's will be the next that I try. If you do a topic search for either maker you will likely find long threads dedicated to each with tons of pictures attached. Enjoy your new gun, I'd like one of those myself.

Good choice! As you can see my 627 pro stays in a state of dirty. Rarely does it miss a range session.
I've said it before here, Hogue grips just work great for me. These are round butt N frames in pao ferro (?) I found on Ebay. Not in the pic is the F.O. front site from Dawson precision. Load some moon clips and this revolver loves to ring steel.

That's the right sight. You can find them allot cheaper on "the bay" though.
Also note, it can be a challenge to press the old sight out. I find a wooden dowel helps focus the needed force to move he sight rearward enough for it to tip up and out. I find a few file strokes on the forward foot point helps it to slip in past the retaining pin easier as well.

I was finally able to get out and shoot the 627 i was surprised at how accurate I was with it . I did have a problem however I probably fired 80 rounds and the cylinder bound up and would not rotate three or four times .I found copper shavings in the barrel cylinder gap at the top and when i used a plastic pic to remove the shavings and everything was fine again.
The ammo i was shooting when i was having the problem was all this ammo LAX Ammunition Reloaded 357 MAG 158 GR 250 RDS W/FREE AMMO CAN #VN3194 | Lax Ammunition
Is that a normal problem for 357 ammo with plated bullets it seems to only happen ever other cylinder full of that ammo ?
I shot some double tab 357 and i did not have the same problem. Also if i hold the gun muzzle up with the cylinder open its is hard to rotate the cylinder because it comes back farm enough to touch the frame i don't know if that is normal.
I'm still fairly new to revolvers so i just wanted to check with your all on those points but overall i do not regret the money spent the trigger is amazing and i can hit well with the gun.

The front sight is spring loaded and easily replaced. My 686 PRO came with a red ramp sight, which I replaced with a red fiber optic. This will be more a nightstand and range gun than for carry. As such, I installed a set of Crimson Trace laser grips, which are only available in round-to-square models. While round butt grips fit this gun, I prefer square butt grips for barrels 4" and longer for better control. Concealed, in a shoulder holster for example, round butt grips would be the way to go. Ahrends are available in either style, and fill the hand nicely.
