Default Saw This 629-1 at LGS, What Do You Think?

A LGS just got this 629-1 8 3/8" in from the original owner. It comes with the original box and sales slip. Not sure if there is anything else in the box. The lockup is tight but I have not tried the trigger.

It has Target hammer, trigger, and grips.

Looks in OK condition. Needs a good cleaning. Saw the marks on the yoke (see 2nd pix with Serial No). I am not sure what these are..maybe the owner took a vice grip to work on the cylinder?

What do you think? The price of $799 is about right for our area.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I would say that it seems on the high side. I was watching a 629-1 on G.B. last week No box if I remember right. Went for $670. It was a more desirable 6" barrel. Many people tend to shy away from 8,&3/8" guns. Other 629's sold for under $750 for what it is worth. Bob

"Many people tend to shy away from 8 3/8" guns."

Why is that? When I picked this up, it did not feel overly heavy or weighted to the front.

That's underpriced for my area.Dont worry too much about having what today's optimum barrel length is ,that could change by tomorrow.

Good looking gun at first glance.Granted, the blow up makes that vice or vice grip damage look perhaps worse than it is, but I'd walk from a gun that someone messed with.
When you go to sell it,the next guy will wrinkle up his nose too.

That sounds like on average a very fair price for a dash 1. Personally, I LOVE the longer tubes on 44s.

Dealers don't like to sit on a used gun for long. I would offer $699 and be ready to wait or lose out.

Short answer: Probably no major concerns - get it if you like it.

Longer answer: Reading the tea leaves scattered about by the other forum members regarding price (i.e. "fair price", "underpriced", "high side"), I would weigh in that the SCSW (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) 4th Edition cites a value of $750 in excellent condition ($1000 new in box and $650 for very good condition) and your LGS price is close enough to Gun Broker prices quoted by bananaman, so I'd opine the asking price of you LGS seems within reason. Most LGS will negotiate.

Regarding the marks on the yoke I suspect they have been there since the gun was produced. They look like minor pits in the steel. I cannot imagine any tool that would have left those marks? Pictures that are close-up or expanded often overemphasize inconsequential surface findings. I have seen very minor pits like this on other yokes. It might be worth taking a cleaning solvent to the area and see what it looks like after cleaning?

Regarding the 8-3/8" barrel: personal preference. I like all barrel lengths and have enjoyed shooting an 8-3/8" 586 and when a lady co-worker who happened to be at the range while I was shooting it later remarked, "You looked just like Clint Eastwood shooting that thing and all your shots were in the bullseye", well, that was priceless.

629-1 a great revolver, 8 3/8" a little long for my taste, I had one and sold it, $799 is an OK price, I always offer less than asking, I would bring $800 in $50 bills and see how many you have to peel off to get it. bring up the yoke marks as a bargaining chip.

I put down $3000 in cash for an ATV a guy wanted $3200 for. He didn't budge even an inch. I drove up the street and bought a $4000 ATV. To me if a person is that stuck in their ways I am not likely to do business with them just on general principle. IMO that just isn't how it's done. Not everyone plays by those rules of course but haggling over price may have cost me a purchase or two but in the end I've saved money IMO.

BTW I love that barrel. I didn't think I would until I bought one from my brother as a favor. He needed money and he wanted to sell his gun to me. Then I shot it and I was amazed at the accuracy. Much better than shorter barreled S&W's I've shot but that may just be a luck of the draw thing.

At any rate I can draw and fire that gun from the right holster pretty darn quick. It's not 2.5" barrel quick of course but it makes up for that in accuracy. I may get another N series but I'll have this one until I die.

Default pits in yoke

I think what you see are pits from corrosion from not cleaning that area. I have a stainless Ruger Mini-14 with those exact pits on the barrel at the gas port (was covered by the stock so I never cleaned it there) That area could be sanded out and then bead blasted to look like new

Probably pits in the forging/casting. I have a 8 3/8" 29-3 that has some. If you want it, offer a price and haggle.
Here in Kali that would be north of a K.

I agree with your general philosophy on dickering.

I am the same way, and wish everyone else was too. Cause if you think about it, a big part of the jumping prices is due to so many people just way too willing to pay up right from the start. Doesn't anyone like to save money and get good deals still? If no one tries to dicker anymore, then sellers have no reason to do so. They just have to hold out for the right person to come along, which seems like is inevitable nowadays.

I also agree with missing out on stuff, but to me the items for sale just weren't worth the asking prices. If I don't think something is worth the money, I don't buy it. I am very down to earth regarding value too, so I am sure that doesn't help me, but if a seller won't dicker with me one iota, then I walk, save myself money, and feel good about it. Another one, or similar, will eventually come along priced appropriately, or someone else will come along willing to dicker. It usually always works out. Rarely will an item you are looking at going to be the one and only chance you have to obtain it. Maybe for a collector and a super rare gun, but luckily I am not a collector, so I am not at the mercy of sticklers with high prices.

As to the gun in question and the OP, if you really like the gun and are comfortable with the price, which means you feel the gun is worth it, then by all means buy it. It's your choice, and everyone is different in regards to the value of a dollar. Although things would be much easier if everyone was 'cheap' like me.
