Model 10-8 Purchase Advice
A buddy needs some cash and wants to sell me his Model 10-8, 4" blued, heavy barrel. It's almost NIB (maybe 50 rds fired), 99% with box, papers, tools, original wood stocks. I don't have pics or a s/n yet, but he tells me he bought it new ~1985. I don't really need this K-frame, and I prefer older revolvers, but I would like to help out my friend. I have no idea of the value of these 10-8s since I'm mostly an N-frame guy, but his $400 asking price seems reasonable. Thoughts? If the price is OK, I may buy it and hang on to it for a while or perhaps use it as a trade gun in the future. Thanks.

For a Model 10 I think that's a touch high, but that's only my opinion. See what others have to say. I think around $300 would be it.

Don't hesitate for that price given you get the box and tools and original stocks. You might be at the high end but it is still a pretty good deal IMHO.
I paid $267 for mine with just the original stocks. Once you shoot it you will be very happy.

Parallel universe here? There have been similar recent threads about pricing of Model 10 revolvers and $400 seems to be almost a bottom price. Even though I'm a J-hound, I'll take all the minty "boxed, tooled" 10s I can get for $400. It's just that I never come across any. You'd think I would, people need $ in Vegas!

I think his asking price is reasonable given the condition of the piece, as well as the associated goodies like the original box, grips, documents, tools, etc. A shooter grade Model 10 without the extras would normally go for $250.00 - $350.00, so I don't think the ask is unreasonable. Also, trying to help your friend out gains you karma points.
Good luck,
Dave

While it may or may not be a tad high depending on how they sell in your area you can not go wrong with it in that condition and everything that goes with it. You may find that the 10-8 is an excellent revolver and can be a tack driver with in reason. My 10-8 is one of the best shooting revolvers I have. While it may not be as accurate as a dedicated target gun it is certainly very close. I feel very comfortable doing head shots on a standard man size silhouette target at 15 yards. Go help you buddy out. If he is a real good friend tell him you don't want him to feel cheated and give him an extra $25 for friendship sake.

The days of used K frames in nice condition for $300 are gone in southern AZ. That's a $400 gun here all day long. Similar specimens here are often priced at $500.

Although S&W made millions of model 10s, I seldom see nice ones turn up for sale in my area. Finding one with original box, papers, and tools never happens. $400 for the gun that you described is not out of line at all and if I wanted it, I would not hesitate. I would prefer a better 1985 revolver over the current production models for a variety of reasons. Retail on a new model 10 is $739 by comparison your $400 LNIB looks much better in my eyes.

One more vote for $400 being just a mite high, but to help a friend, you bet ! I'd do it, too.
On second thought, maybe that is, indeed, an appropriate price point. Buy it.

Here's a comparison. Budd's sells police surplus holster worn Model 10s for $299 shipped to your dealer. Adding a $25 FFL fee and sales tax makes them $352 out the door for me. Less than $50 upgrades you to 99% in the box and you get to inspect it before buying.

A new model 10 is $638 right now at Buds plus FFL.
$400 bucks between friends is an OK deal. If he's your closest goodest friend? Offer him $325.00 and give him the option that he can buy it back for $325.00 any time. I've done this and never have I had someone ask to buy it back. $325.00 is the going rate down here where guns are scarce yuppie/hippieland Austin, Texas.

I vote yes!
You should be on that model 10 as described, like a duck on a june bug.
A lot of Nice model 10's is this area are pricing at least that much, many as described in the 450 - 475 range. Truly, they are creeping up.
You won't be sorry you bought it 6 months from now. A no lock K frame at that.

$400 for a LNIB M10-8 is a reasonable price around here. I'm not saying that I wouldn't offer $350 and sell it back at a later date if he wanted.

Thanks for all of the sage advice
Thanks to all of you for your feedback and advice. I also believe that the price is reasonable, so I am buying the 10-8 from my friend. However, I think that I will hold on to it for a while just in case he develops "seller's remorse" and wants to buy it back.

Thanks for your acknowledgement! However, I would hang on to it (your pal excepted, of course). Most of us agree a Model 10 is one of the best handguns to own and it would be the last one we would sell, if even then.

I recently acquired a 10-7 2" in similar condition for that price. Just can't find vintage S&W wheel guns in decent shape outside of an estate sale it seems...Goodluck!

That's a nice gun. I'd jumped on it. Very nice for its age. New ones are around 650 here. That's better than new. It's old in new condition. Congrats.

Some argue that millions were made and the Model 10 will not appreciate like other models. I say that example of craftsmanship will only go up in value.

Hi Hawg Rider:
Congratulations on your new Model 10, and for helping your friend out. Absolutely gorgeous piece, and well worth the money you spent. My suggestion would be for you to carefully remove the grips, and carefully and gently degrease it (isopropyl alcohol or Windex with an old piece of T-shirt works well), and then apply a couple of thin coats of paste wax (I use whatever car wax is laying about the garage). The wax helps protect the finish and will also enhance the looks of that fine revolver. If you plan on carrying the piece, you'll find the grips can get beat up pretty quickly. If it's important to you, you may want to find and use a set of replacement grips and save the original grips.
Good luck,
Dave

For what it is, $400, would be a BUY ME price! I had a police turn in 10-8. It did not look too good at all.(it shot well) Of course, no box or papers. With shipping, and FFL, I had around $325 into it.
