My 3" model 66 find - with pictures!
I stopped by the LGS today and was told they took in a S&W model 66, it hadn't yet made it into the case. The owner said it was a 3". He brought it out, so I looked it over. It is a 66-3, with a BBN serial prefix, dating it to 1988 according to SCSW, which also says there were a run of these in -3 in 1988, so the serial number falls in the right range. It was quite clean and I could tell it hadn't been fired much because there were no case head imprints on the recoil shield. Cylinder was tight as a drum. No box or papers, but the stocks look original. It was offered to me for $525. I jumped on it because I know these have quite the following. It just goes to show that anyone can stumble on a jem! I think I did OK. What say the experts on these? Here are the pictures as promised:

Won't call myself an expert, but I'm happy to offer the opinion you got a fine, desirable revolver at a bargain price given its condition. You should do more business with that shop since they turned you on to a new acquisition before it made it to the shelf!

Great deal. I bought one with box, papers and tools in super (almost LNIB) shape 3 weeks ago for $865 and thought that was the deal of the century. It's a great shooter.
I love my 66 snubbies, but having a full length extractor is so much easier for reloads.

Nice find at 50% off current value, even though it is not an "Nframe" - perhaps it can be no2 in your collection . Enjoy!

Great revolver. Unbelievable deal.
Have you found other deals at this LGS before or is this the first and only time?

You did quite well. Take a deal when you can get it. Doesn't happen every day! I bought a -2, 2.5" last Saturday for haggle price of $725 OTD. at the gun show. Very nice gun though. Bob

At $525 with his profit figured in, that means he probably had less than $400 in it, at the most. You don't owe him any donuts or pizza. He skinned the man ahead of you. While their is no doubt that all of us would have paid more than you did to get it, he did just fine our you wouldn't have it. Again the old moral...you do not make money when you sell, you make money when you buy. You got a great deal, enjoy!

Nothing like a 50% off sale at the local gun store.................
Great score...........
I bought my first 66-3 3" in 1988/89 for $270 out the door...... the LGS owner probably asked the previous owner what he wanted for it........
the owner probably left happy as a clam....
he (or more likely his Dad) had a gun in his sock drawer for 30 years then he sells it and make $100 bucks or so .......
.......................... but none the wiser!!!!!

Now you've done it. You have to argue what ammo you can shoot in a K-frame magnum.

Very good deal. I purchased a 66-2 3" a few years ago for 500.00 NIB. They have appreciated a bunch since then. I wanted the full length ejector rod that the 2.5" did not provide and the longer sight radius as well.

As everyone else has said, think you got a great deal. I would have bought it for sure at that price. I just put a 6" 66-1 on layaway at $550+tax the other day. Similar condition...appears to have not been fired much but has Pachmayrs. Still thought I did okay.

I doubt you would have got that gun for less than $900 here in S.C. That was the deal of the century.

You were taken! But I'd like to help. I will help you recoup some of your losses and take that gun off your hands for $250! CASH! Don't thank me, I just hate to see fellow gun collectors get taken so badly!
Now you need to search for a nice set of finger groove combat grips to really put that gun over the top.
Great gun! Enjoy!

Did the owner that sold it to the LGS have prefrontal lobe issues.Maybe had a lobotomy in the past.
The LGS could have put this 66 on GB as many LGS do when they get something in like a 3" Model 66-2,-3 and dash 4 so why sell it so cheaply?
