What distance do you shoot .22LR at the range?
What distance do you shoot .22 LR at the range? I was shooting at 25 yards yesterday at the range. Our range has places for your target to be placed at 7, 15 and 25 yards. Most folks seem to shoot at 7 & 15 yards. They seem surprised when I put my target at 25 yards. Though I must say looking at the groups that some shoot at 7 yards and the holes in the wood all over the range make me wonder if some folks should be allowed to shoot at all.

Depends on the gun but most of my .22 handgun shooting starts at 15 and works out to 100.
Unless I am sighting in or testing ammo I try not to shoot on paper... Clay birds, gallon milk jugs, shotgun shells, steel plates or the small animal silhouette targets are much preferred...

The local indoor range is 25 yards. I use this target at that range. The RO's no longer make any comment to me.

25 yards minimum. It would seem a waste of my time to shoot a 22LR any closer.

25 yards for pistol and 50 with a rifle. Because it's boring to always use a bench rest, I try to challenge myself by shooting offhand. But it is humbling to see your one inch bench rest group grow to 5-6" when you stand up!

One Summer grasshoppers were thick. We installed some 32 power target scopes and had a blast at 100 yards when they would jump on the target board. My friend had a tricked out Ruger 10-22 and I shot my Remington 513 which I still have. Flies are fun to shoot also. You can see the blood splatter at 50 yards. Cans or shotgun hulls shot with pistols start at 20 feet an shoot them until they are wont move any more. I get to pick them up and sell for .40 cents a pound.

50 yards, one-handed, standing without a rest. Try bullseye sometime!

I used to shoot at 25 yards all the time, but circumstances sort of forced a move to 15 yards.
When I first started shooting 25 yards was the common distance. In fact that was the shortest distance. Over the decades target stands starting being installed closer and closer. With the spread of concealed carry the shorter distances have totally taken over.
25 yards is appropriate for target shooting, but for practical self-defense shooting that's too far. The outdoor range I shot at for years that was huge got down to just four positions at 25 yards. There were always a lot of parents with kids shooting .22 rifles that wanted to use it so I ended up moving to 15 yards, and just scaling down my targets.
I was shooting at a 6" bullseye at 25 yards, so I just made up a target that was 3.6". You can shoot at longer ranges, or smaller targets. Same difference to me.
6 (inches) ÷ 25 (yards) = .24 (inch of bullseye diameter per yard)
.24 x 15 (yards) = 3.6" diameter bullseye.

Same here....
I also shoot my J-frames at the same distances with both .38 Special and .357 mag....
People who shoot at very short ranges seem to want good results on their targets, and moving the target closer gives them the results they want. However, sometime, down the road, they should start moving the target further out, or their marksmanship will never improve and their shooting will still remain poor. It's all about improving ones skills as time passes, and not about "that's good enough"...........

shooting distance with .22
It varies which .22 I'm using. With a 43C or 34-1, it's 10-15 yards or anything that is enjoyable. With a S&W 41 or 17-5, it's 25 and 50 yards.

My best day offhand with a S&W 22A was 8 hits out of 10 on a 12" 100 yard gong. I have tried but never equaled that. Most of my 22 lr gets shot at 25 yards but it is rare these days. 32 and 38 are much cheaper to load and shoot.

When I am shooting paper with a handgun I shoot mostly at 7 yards so I can see where the bullets are hitting on paper. If I am shooting at steel, then 35 to 75 yards.

Years ago when 22 came in boxes of 50 and the slide out piece was plastic, I bought bricks and went to the same sagebrush patch all the time. I had a bunch of those box bottoms spread out over that sagebrush patch and would stroll around and shot every one I saw, got different ranges, different sides of body as I didn't square up. Once in the while I would pick up the shot up ones and kind of redistribute some of the others. I was working on a drilling rig a week of 12 hour days then 12 hour nights and then a week off. When working nights I would get up eat and go out and burn up a bunch of ammo ever day in that patch of sage brush. When the rig was ready to move I would clean it up and start a new one at the new location. Got really got with that model 18 and I still have it.

My wife and I shoot .22 hand guns (and all other calibers) at 7 to 15 yards. We practice for home defense. There's no place in our house where
you can shoot over 25' to 30'.

I took this last week at my usual indoor range. I'm the second from the left, at the 20 yard max, shooting my .22 Beretta 948. The guy to my left was shooting an AR with an optical sight. I'm not sure about the others, but there were a couple of other rifles popping off. Nobody was shooting past 7 yards ( the range markers are in feet).
I freely admit to a perverse pleasure in wheeling my target back from down yonder with a group smaller than the ones fired at bad breath range.

I use the same, but I put a self-sticking red dot in the bullseye. As an aside, I have to say I don't hit it (the bullseye) that much, but it's fun to try. My only 22's are a pre-18 and a 17-2. I think they're the best revolvers on the planet in that caliber.

I think the answer to your question depends on what the shooter's objective is. As a retiree, I go to my club range at various times of the week and day. It's very clear to me that many shooters just need/want some trigger time. The range they shoot with is dependent on how far they can go and have a group that satisfies them. Sound familiar?
There's also a breed of shooter who enjoys blowing off lots of ammo in sustained fire using semiauto rifles with hi-cap mags. Sound familiar?
I am not by nature a paper puncher....I'm just not patient/focused enough. I like to shoot USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge, bowling pins, etc. I go to the range to sight in my guns for the distance appropriate for the game. In winter we shoot at self-healing targets at 9 yds. due to space constraints. In warmer weather the same guns get sighted at 25 yds.(a compromise that works best for me).
We shoot mostly rimfire matches indoors and both rimfire and centerfire outdoors. The answer boils down to whatever trips your trigger(sorry about that). I should add that competitive speed shooting is in front of a group of peers which requires the ability to block out the distractions. Not everyone's cup of tea.

Outdoors: 25yds.
Indoors: 15-18yds.. around where the lights are the best. Lighting at the indoor range is lacking. I can't see targets at 25yds on some of the lanes.

this is a ****ty attitude towards other shooters who may be new to the sport/hobby. Unless they are being reckless with their firearm and endangering others, being a bad shot shouldn't exclude you from the sport.

I have a High Standard Citation from about 1974 that is one sweet, tack driving pistol. Aside from Bullseye, in the mid Eighties it did double duty in IHMSA small bore matches. It proved perfectly capable of shooting clean with cheap Winchester T22 ammo, I shot it in all classes except revolver. I would not give it up for a bushel full of Model 41's.
Most of the time I shoot an S&W 34-1 as it's is just enjoyable. When it is time to humble some young'uns, however, I break out the Colt Officer's Model Match. It is still satisfying to shoot a respectable score, shooting with one hand, standing on your hind legs, like a man

My current range goes to 25 yards and I shoot the K22 at that. The four inch barrels I shoot at 7 and/or 10 yards.
This summer when the county outdoor range opens the pistol stands are out to 50 yards. I'm not sure I'll be able to see the target at 50 yards but I will give it a go.

Good lord, 50 yards with a pistol? I was all happy shooting 15 yards
How big are the freaking targets? I'm not even sure I can see that far.
I am about to get into a pistol club near my house. I suspect there are some very good shooters there. I was told there are some gentlemen there shooting pistol at those distances and it is quite a sight to see. Looking forward to learning. Pete

I can't see the holes at 25 yards. I usually shoot a handgun at 21 feet, sometimes I'll reach out a little further.

Bought a Colt M4 OPS last year or so. We only have a hundred yard range. I'd love to see what it can do one day with 40 grain super extra aguila...
Guess I should try it at 25, 50, and 75 yards.......I need to know. Happy just hitting a 300 meter silhouette at 100 yards. Lots of fun to be had.

I shoot in a few different games, depending on which, it may be:
10 & 25 yards - speed steel.
50 feet - indoor bullseye.
25, 50, 75 & 100 yards - silhouette.

Sir, I have taught more folks to shoot than I can to think about. Trained by the military and the FBI as a firearms instructor. But when I watch some of these folks shoot, I feel sorry for them. If you try to offer assistance they look at you as if you have two heads. Who knows maybe some of them take delight in destroying things. Our baffles, uprights, overheads, benches and target carriages are full of holes. The range officers replace 30 or so target carriages a week due to being shot up(granted they are just two by fours, but they still cost money). I see folks who at the 7 yard line can not hold a six inch group, they are all over a 24 by 24 inch piece of cardboard that the range uses for a target backer and think they are doing good. If this is a ***TTY attitude then I am sorry.

I've seen people spray bullets all over the target but with one in the bullseye and they are estatic because they know they have an accurate weapon because it hits the bullseye. Makes me want to run away fast.

Your range companions sound good compared to the idiots here. There have been many times I left the range for my own safety. I can say more, but I feel I would inflame some of the forum members with my comments. But you, sir, are correct, and I sympathize.......

I do most of my .22 handgun shooting at 10-15 yards. If I can ever find the time to work cataract replacement surgery into my impossible work schedule, I might actually start stretching that distance out to where it "used to be".

I've learned over the years that when I'm teaching a new pistol shooter, I start them at 3 yards. It helps them build confidence and it helps me tell what they need corrected (if they miss the paper at 10 or 15 yards I can't coach them on what they're doing wrong). As they get the feel for it, I move them to 7 and 10 yards with the 22, and once they settle in, we start over with a 9mm at 3 yards.
When I'm shooting for my own pleasure, I sight in at 10 - 15 yards, then go to 25. I have to use paper at my range so I use the "splatter" stick-ons at 25 so I can see where I'm hitting. I do this all for the fun of teaching others and getting better myself...not competition. I'm 68; shooting is my favorite fun time.

between 10 and 100yds. A good .22 with good ammo will shoot around 1moa out to 100 yds. At least mine does.

I shoot M17 at rock or steel gong or whatever as long as i can see. Really dry soil at around 350yds, I can still spot approximate POI but over 400yds, gets really tough.

Pistols: 25 and 50 yards.
Rifles: 50 and 100 yards.
Having said that, I have shot one of my pistols at 100 to prove I could hit a pop can at that distance.

It is ****ty. With all your experience you should know that shooters come in all shapes. If you feel that you should strip them of their right because they are not bullseye shooters more power to you.

I shoot .22 handgun at 25 and 50 yards. Picked up a sweet 617 6" a while back and it's a blast. So to speak. Mostly shoot in the open these days. Saw too many holes in the overhead at the city range.

My Savage Target rifle will zero out to 325 yds with the standard peep sights. Occasionally I do some 300 yd shooting when the wind isn't blowing too much. Not a bad proxy for 1000 yd shooting with a 308.
Handgun - 25 yds on paper or 50 ft on the steel plates.
