Default New member intro and help to ID a S&W revolver

Hello all, new member to the site.

My wife had been asking me for a bedside .38 for some time and I happened across a cheap used 67-1 at a local Big R store. According to them, this pistol came from S&W and was a reworked police trade in. It had a printed sticker on the back strap that read "P12" (not that this means anything). I found the action to be tight, the timing to be very solid, and the pistol has very little end-shake. As expected, the finish was pretty nasty and it had a fair amount of scratches and dings. The Hogue grips it came with were also toast so I knew they had to go. They wanted $350 for it so I found that to be fair and I picked it up.

The serial on the pistol is: AWY3578

I took it home that night and began polishing it. I took some 1000 grit paper and gave it some wet sandign in some spots (I'm new to this so I didn't want to get crazy), I then took some mother's aluminum polish to it by hand:

Funny enough, under that sticker was the same thing, etched into the metal. In the end, I really do not care, it adds some character to the pistol.

I took it out the next day and ran some various ammo through is as well as a few rounds of +P. Everything worked as expected and the firearm was accurate.

Here's where she sits now, I put it on a polishing wheel ans popped on a set of VZ grips. She shoots wonderfully and my wife was very pleased with the outcome.

I didn't get it perfect, but I'm more than pleased with the results.

Any help on the manf date would be awesome!

Welcome! Prefix AWY is likely from the summer of 1987. We like "neglected orphans that find a good home" stories here . Enjoy!

Welcome from Pennsylvania! You seem to have made a good choice and have done well with a bit of rehab. I think it will serve you well, and congratulations on your adoption.
