Default TKC Cylinder Modification

Later today or first thing tomorrow morning I'm shipping off my L-frame, 7 shot cylinder to TK Custom for machining to accept Moonclips.

For those members who've had this work done, how did the transaction go and how do you like the results? And please, let's not turn this into a bickering contest about Moonclips vs speed loaders.

Dave

I had two J frame cylinders converted to 9mm and moonclips.

I was very pleased with the work and the transaction was smooth and fast.

When I had them returned I had an issue with extraction of the 9mm casings and called them with a question and actually spoke to the young man who converted my cylinders. He explained of the best ammo to use, due to the pressure/expansion of 9mm casings, and things have been flawless since.

Good product, quick return and great customer service.

I purchased a Model 442 cylinder that had been cut for moon clips by TK Custom from a forum member for my Model 642-1. The cylinder swap was without any problems, and the 442 cylinder has worked flawlessly.

Regards,

Dave

Based on the positive feed back here and other comments I read/heard over the last few years, the cylinder is off to TKC for machining. Should have it back in a couple weeks if their web site is accurate. I'll try to get some good pictures of the finished product and post them here.

Question for you. After the conversion could you still fire 38s out of that cylinder? And if so did you have to use moon clips?

I sent them a cylinder for my model 60 on a Friday and it was completed and back in my hand on the following Wednesday! The workmanship was all that I could have wished for. I will be sending another cylinder to them as soon as my bank account recovers from my last gun purchace.

Now my model 60 and 640 Pro use the same moon clips. Also recommend the BMT moon clip loader/unloader. It's not the cheapest but it is the best and easiest to use.

TK Custom has been a premium place for years. BMT loader/unloader is the best one out there, I've tried them all.

You can still shoot .38 special/.357 (if that is what it took before) in it but they tell you not to shoot high velocity/power rounds from it. You can do this without a moon clip.

They also tell you not to shoot high power 9mm from it due to the machining of the cylinder.

I have never tried and have stuck with 9mm because I have other .38 specials to use if I desire.

Also I have noted that the other moon clips that I have tried (The Smith and Wesson ones in particular because after I had this done I lucked into a 940 at a can't miss price) do not work in the TK cylinder. I believe they are too thick to function in the cylinder and cause issues with closing. More of an FYI because TK moon clips are top notch.

Are you sending them a spare cylinder or modifying the existing one? My recommendation when modifying something from stock is to make the modifications to a spare part so the product can always be returned to the original configuration so it can be sent back to the factory for warranty work. For a revolver, making modifications to a spare cylinder would also mean that cylinder would need to checked for timing and possibly cylinder gap.

The gun in question is a 386 Night Guard. I'm guessing I could spend the next year or so trying to find a spare cylinder for that model but I'd rather spend the time shooting the gun with Moonclips.

I bought the gun used. Not sure the warranty would apply to me. In any event, I've heard and read (here on the forum) enough stories about S&W not doing that good a job in repairs that I would take the gun to a competent gun smith before sending it to Springfield.

I just received a model 10 cylinder back from them this week. It was, I think, a week turnaround time. I'm very pleased.
