Some info on 686 Revolver
I'm looking at purchasing the 686 in the attached pictures. I own a few 3rd gen semi autos but this will be my first wheel gun and I'm just wondering what are some things I should look for on this particular 686? I have not seen the gun myself yet and the owner states there is no M stamp near the model number. I've looked through quite a few threads but am unsure of how to tell all the different variations apart. Secondly would $725 be a decent price for this piece?

Looks like a very nice early 686.
The price depends a lot on the local market. Around here $600-$650 might be closer to what I see around here.
Box and papers adds to value but I have a concern that that 686 does not have the original grips.
Goncalo Alves target stocks were most likely what the gun shipped with.
That would complete the package for me.
Oh, and welcome to the Forum.

From just the pic and apparent condition, in my area, that gun would bring $725, especially if it has the correct box.

Thank you for the replies. The fact it doesn't have factory grips is the exact type of info I was looking for. In the local area here in York, PA I rarely find any prelock 686s that are in decent shape.

With the box, that 686 would sell for more than that in my neck of the woods.

Another point to make is that it's been polished to a higher finish than original. For me that and the Pachmayr grips makes the price the absolute top dollar.
My 4" is an AAB serial prefix my dad bought new in September 1981. It's still going strong all these years later though he did send it in for the M update.

This tends to be a critical factor these days........
At my end of the state it's priced $26- 75 too high. A couple of dealers I know would let me have it at $650 out the door ...... as it would be a $500 gun, tops, on trade. But things are always higher at your end of the state!!!!
I'd make a counter offer of $650....... but if you want it; don't lose it over $50.......see your quote above....... and spread that $50 over the next decade or two; and,......... it's less than a cup of coffee a year.

The price may be a little high, but more importantly, look under under those rubber stocks for rust or pitting. Good luck.

Totally agree to look under the grips. Check the lockup (see youtube for videos on how to check revolvers). Also, give the inside of the barrel a good lock for scratches. Lastly, bring some snap caps and fire in DA and SA to get a feel for the trigger should be very good.
Looks in good shape. The price here in upstate NY would be $800 for such a gun.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I'm meeting the current owner on 4/15 to do the transfer as long as everything meets specs. (No pitting under grips, no gouges on the bore, and all paperwork included)

I would try to get the price down as mentioned. Keep in mind that a nice set of stocks for it (if desired) would be around another $100. I have a 4" 586 no dash, and a 5", & 6" 686. You will like a L Frame! Bob
