24-3 Round butt four inch?
A friend of mine called today and asked about a 24-3 round butt with 4" barrel. I've never seen one...Serial #ALA3000 range puts it late 1985. No work done to the butt. Has anyone else seen one? This guy has been involved in Smiths for 23 years and wanted to know if there were others. He sent pics...Is it a rebarrel or legit?I know only a letter will answer for sure, just putting it up for opinions..

First step is to go to the SCSW and check for variances but I have never seen a 4" round butt so would be skeptical it began life as a 3"

I should have made a note that the SCSW does not mention a 4 inch round butt. Thats why I brought it the forum.
Stay safe Engine49.
Thanks

Most likely a re-barrel.
I recall replacement barrels (3", 4" and 6-1/2") being available occasionally in the aftermarket.
I have not seen or heard of this particular configuration being offered by the factory previously. I would be very surprised if this is a factory gun, except that they may have done the barrel swap for an owner/customer. A letter, of course, would answer any doubts about its originality.

In the absence of proof that it was originally made that way I assume it is a rebarreled 3". I would not pay some wild eyed collector price for it based on the unsupported claim that it is original. However, it does combine those photogenic Combats with a more practical and better looking barrel so it would still be worth a tidy sum to me.

Leu Horton ordered a lot of -3s in round butt. Not sure on the 4 inch. I have owned a 2 1/2 inch.

Close ups of the frame without the grips would help establish if it's a lew horton with a four inch barrel in it, or a four inch 24-3 with a converted frame. It's one of the two. Im pretty sure they didnt make a round butt 4".
