50th 500 DELIVERS - now with Pics!
For my 50th, my bride presented me with a brand new S&W500 Mag, p/n 163500.
I spent the next 3 evenings watching Netflix, and massaging the new addition with a little lovin' from Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish, and a microfiber cloth.
Then, I added a Weig-A-Tinny Mini rail and an Aimpoint H-2 micro.
Today, I took it out to a range to dial in the Aimpoint, and found not a single adjustment needed to be made!
Incredible.
Never before was POA = POI on the first go round.
To say I'm impressed, in love, or in awe would be an understatement.
What surprised me, and everyone that shot the 500, was how mild the recoil was. We were all anticipating that we might need a wrist cast after the first pull... I was shooting 325 grain Fusion's and was pleasantly surprised with the experience. Sure, there's no doubt that you pulled the trigger! Yet, it wasn't unpleasant at all.
I now have no doubts, I should have done this sooner. I first shot a 500 about 6 years ago; that's when the grin began. Now, I'm enjoying a perma-grin because I have my own to enjoy, and share with others.
A real bonus from this gift is that I won the serial number lottery. The serial number includes my initials and a great poker hand as well! I couldn't be happier!
P.S. the added pics include the NIB as received, then along with a new PC case that I bought from another forum member. Those pics are pre-massage ;^) BTW, I must have rubbed the bride the right way somehow to get on this side of her :^D

All that polishing and shooting, and no pics? Doubtful it ever happened. Sounds like a fairy tale.

They're great guns, there is NOTHING they can't do well other than concealed carry. Yeah, yeah, some carry the short barrels but I don't think they're a great CCW option.
OP, good choice, reload and have fun but do wear double ear protection, good for the ears and reduces the perception of recoil as well. Don

No problem ...slips right in your pocket (either one).
(Looks like the OP got a 8-3/8" bbl. 500 coming in at a featherweight 71.4oz. Congrats! )

I never pass up an opportunity to post pictures of my guns! Here's one to look at until Flipside posts his. One word of advise Flipside: if your bride is giving you guns, you might want to a spend a little less time massaging your gun and a little more time massaging her!

As any real gun enthusiast knows, frequent use/utility has nothing to do with it if you have the desire and the finances to get it. Don

Oh man... I've wanted a 500ES since they came out so many years ago. What's the recoil like? Have you shot a 329PD? If so... how would you compare them? My 329PD is the most "unpleasant" gun I've ever fired. At least it was until I put X-frame grips on it.
BTW... that 500ES is just so awesome. Most BAD***** snubbie ever made!!!

I don't usually get nutted up about other people trying to tell me what I need or what is useful to me. Some of the most arrogant posts I've read on gun forums I'm on were when other people try to tell someone what they need or how impractical something someone else owns is.
Carry on with the X-Frame porn! Here is my 460V.

Here is mine, and my brothers ( known on here as S&W Magnum). He has the NRA one, which is 255 out of 1100 made. And I have the basic one. They are both .460s.

Not much that compares to the 500s recoil.
Never shot a 329PD, but I do have a 329NG (27.4oz on my scale) which is only a couple ounces heavier. The 500ES is almost twice the weight (52.5oz), & twice the power with no porting either. Never shot them back-to-back with full loads. Heavy bullets in the 500 are a handful though & I never go heavier than 400gr. . Moderate loads are my normal.
I do dislike S&W's imitations of Hogue's rubber grip that they're putting on the new pistols. The backstrap is too pointed & hard & hurt my hand. My 329NG (pictured below) has them. The old Pachmayr Compac Customs (on my 357NG below) were more rounded & felt better. I just received a set of Pachmayr's Diamond Pro (not pictured) for my 329NG as I liked the ones I tried on my 357NG a lot.
X-frame grips are great though, just too large on the Night Guards.

My brother used to own a standard 500 with 8-3/8 bbl. (only got sold down the river to acquire a pre-64 model 70 otherwise he would still have it) Shooting full house handloaded 300gr XTP Mags it was definitely a thump to the hand. My 460 shooting full house handloaded 240gr XTP Mags is only a little bit sharper recoiling than my full house 44 mags out of my 6.5" 629 Classic. The shock wave that slaps you in the face is what gets your attention. And yes, I have fired it a fair bit with the Altamont rosewood grips on it shown in the pic I posted above. It's definitely no cream puff, but it's far from unmanageable.
I've never fired a 329PD but I own a 4" m29-2 and with 200gr XTPs sitting on a max load of AA#9 it gets your attention. I would expect the 329 to be more punishing to shoot than my 29 or my 460, but I have not yet been presented an opportunity to try one. Recoil has to be pretty fierce on that one.
I too am not a fan of S&W's switch away from Hogue black rubber. They weren't terribly attractive to the eye, but they worked well.
