Default Latest addition to my 3" revolver collection - 629-1 3" Update - Range Report.

Been busy so I have not posted for awhile.

Beginning of March I was browsing the for sale section of the forum (Dangerous for me, I need to stay out of there and away from pawnshops LOL.) and there it was - beautiful 629-1 with my favorite type of grip (Craig Spegel smooth extended boot grip) already on it.

I have a pretty decent collection of 3" Smiths but have been actually looking for a nice 4" 67-1. I only have one other N frame in my collection and was not that interested in them until now.

Looked at the picture in the ad and thought, "Hmmm very nice, already has Spegels. Will fit into the 3" collection awesome." The owner wanted to trade for a good condition 3913 plus cash. Thought "Will make a great 6 shot mostly .44 Special with magnum power occasionally when you need it." So I contacted the owner, the 3913 and the cash was sent, and now its mine.

Took it to the range and shot some 240 grain factory .44 Special LSWC's out of it. A very fun and accurate revolver to shoot! Recently purchased some Speer Gold dot Short Barrel in both .44 Special and Magnum to try out. Will be developing handloads for it as well. Probably a good plated 200 grain at 900 fps to practice for the Speer 200 grainers and a light 240 grain soft point at around 1100 fps for some more punch when necessary.

My brother loves .44's and thinks that I should switch my mountain carry gun from my 3" 65 to this 3" 629-1. Thinking about it. For those that have them, what do you use them for?

I have a 629-2E that I picked up last year from an elderly neighbor.
Haven't shot it much but that will change now since I will start reloading for the .44 Mag. Will be making up some mild plinking loads for it.
It will make a nice carry gun when I go to my country place and it also goes along well with my Ruger Alaskan 45/454 with 2.5 inch barrel.

Congrats OP! Love the looks of that beauty. I have 4" .44s... but I could see getting into 3" models. That just looks right to me. Those grips look great too.

I use mine exactly for what you're thinking of, mountain/hiking/camping carry. You can't beat the 3" barrel on an N frame for when you want 44mag power at hand while hiking for miles.

Congrats on the -1. Mine is a -2E. I really like the "half" lug, fluted cylinder, and front sights of the -1 production run. However, I still think I would rather have the 103650 production run with all the "enhancement" upgrades for longer durability. However, the unfluted cylinder and full lugs adds some extra weight. I guess that's when a good holster comes in play.

I need to get some 44spl cases and start loading them that way I can enjoy shooting mine more often. I rarely take it to the range anymore because frankly it's too powerful just shooting magnums, and it's not really a "range" gun. So I think loading some 44spl will allow me to enjoy it as a range gun from time to time. Will have to keep an eye out for someone giving away or selling some 44spl brass.

When I shot a few .44 Magums with mine I knew right away the factory Pachmyer grip had to go.
Get you the S&W 500 grips as they go right on and make a world of difference when shooting!
Yeah not as good looking as fine finished wood but they absorb the kick. The picture I posted shows those grips.
After you have handled/carried the short stocky Ruger Alaskan, the 629 isn't that bad.

Very nice! The 629-1 3" was my first .44 snub. Be careful. The 3" big bore is habit forming.

I think you are really going to like the .44. I have 2 629s, a 3" Talo and a 6.5". Also a Lew Horton 24-3 3". They are pretty accurate and a pleasure to shoot with .44 special ammo. It's a addiction you will enjoy.

Congratulations! I found one of those about four years ago and I love it. I fired some 1000fps hand loads and some 240gn factory .44mag loads from it my first trip to the range and at 25yds they both shoot to the same POI. If you are going to hand load, I recommend .44mag. cases loaded to about 1000fps. I have not loaded or shot any .44spl rounds in mine. Mine is accurate, soft shooting, and a very good "woods carry" revolver. You loose some of the "umph" you get from a 6"bbl .44mag but nothing hit with a 240gn at 1000fps is going to argue.

I forgot to mention in my other post to give John Culina's RB combat grips a look. I have a couple sets of his. He is forum member "Kurac". An example of his Osage Orange combats are on the 629-1 at the top on pic.

Great find and love the Spegels. I have the dash 1 and I'll bet you take those grips off at the range!! The 3"ers pack a little punch. Enjoy.

iPac, Thanks for the info. PM me, I have lots of .44 Special brass from when I had a Winchester .44 trapper and Model 29 combo years ago. I just shot 50 rounds of the HSM 'Cowboy' load in .44 Special so I know that they are once fired Starline. Ill send them your way.

fortyshooter,

Thanks for the heads up on the S&W 500 grip.

Ill pick one up for the hotter loads. The revolver came with two extra sets of Goodyears - but the 500 grip looks like it will handle recoil better than the patchy's. No way that Spegel gip is going to the mountains if I decide to carry the gun. too nice to get beat up like the Uncle Mike combat grip on my workin' Model 65.

Great - as if being addicted to both prelock revolvers and Third Gens was not enough!

I'm going to have to mortgage my house to pay for em all.

Nice collection you have! What are they?

I actually don't mind the factory Pachs it came with. At least that's they way I remember it. I will have to pull it out and take it shooting here soon. If the Pachs aren't what I remember, I might look into those 500 grips.

I know the wood combats sting my hands pretty good with magnums. I really wanted factory combats for it, and now I'm glad I didn't pay the money for them just to have them sting too. Still, I need to have wood on my guns. Rubber is only for the range.

From top to bottom:
629-1 Lew Horton wearing Culina combats. This gun is an outstanding shooter and got me into reloading, which made an enormous positive impact on this hobby for me.
629-1 Lew Horton NIB I found sitting at an lgs.
29-10 "Bounty Hunter"...it unfortunately has those words on the right side of the barrel. The action on that particularly gun is magnificent, so the idea is to shoot is so much it needs a refinish
29-10 Lew Horton tapered barrel

If you are considering reloading that 3" 629 you just got may push you over the edge. Just imagine shooting light loads all day at about $0.18/rd

Nice! duplicate 629-1's. I had never seen one in the wild and bought the one discussed in this thread on impulse. Ill never criticize people for having duplicates - I found 2 different 3" Model 65's in two different pawn shops here in Colorado. One is my workin' gun and one is a backup. Eventually they will go to kids or grandkids.

Bounty Hunter or not, the 29-10 is really cool!

You know Ill be reloading. I have not owned a .44 for quite awhile but have the dies from before. I reload for every caliber I own except the rimfires. The two Dillon presses stay busy. I have some Xtreme 200 grain plated flat points and 240 grain LSWC's on the way. Need to order some 240 grain JSP's or JHP's as well.

Both 629-1's were impulse buys for me due to "Buy now!" price tags that were further reduced by cash offers. Had to do it...both times

Im a huge fan of Xtreme plated slugs. If you buy during free shipping and and 10 or 15% off sales, they are cheaper than lead. Can't beat that. The 629-1 up top in the pic has put almost 3000 of their 200gr plated bullets down range. 5-5.5gr of Clays under the 200gr rnfp is a wonderful gallery load in that gun. You going to enjoy that piece a lot!

SLT223,

Thanks for the load info! Do you know if Clay's meters well out of a Dillon powder measure?

Anyone have a suggestion using Bullseye, 231, or Power Pistol? I have a lot of those powders on hand. Speer shows 231 and Bullseye in their #14 short barrel load data that I have. I can pick up some Clay's if necessary. I think that this gun will be as fun to shoot as my 625 with 200 grain target auto rim's.

The Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel loads in both .44 Special and Magnum, as well as all the Xtreme bullets for reloading showed up today and yesterday. The magnum Gold Dot loads sure look like they mean business!

Clays works fine through a Dillon measure. No need to hunt down Clays if you have 231 and BE, unless you just want to experiment. I've also used 5gr of bullseye and 8gr 231 under Xtreme 200gr plated in .44 Mag brass. I have power pistol but haven't loaded with it yet.

Looks good, but it dont really shoot lead any more since most of my shooting is indoors these days. I stopped buying hazmat from Cabelas who wack me with shipping, hazmat, and sales tax. I used to not care when I put tons of work travel on my Cabelas card basically getting me free points, but unfortunately that's not the case anymore.

I normally use special-length cases for weaker loads, too. But it's not necessary. If you've got'em, you can always download the longer magnum cases at your preferred "special" power level. I keep meaning to try this so I don't have to worry about magnum loads sticking in the cylinder after shooting specials.

Default 3" ers

Here are my 3" N frame SS guns. I like the Adhrends combats for shooting these hand cannons. My 629 is a -2E gun that came knocking at my door one day!

Congratulations on getting a great gun. I collect big bore snubbies and bought a new 629 Talo in December. Put black Badger grips on it and brought her to the range. I was amazed at how accurate this 3" was. The DA pull is great. This is my favorite in my collection because if the accuracy and trigger. I EDC it in either a Craft Holsters iwb or a Simply Rugged in cool weather. I will only use .44 sp ammo with this for EDC. Currently carrying Speer Gold Dot 200 gr. I agree with your brother on switching guns.

Default Range report #2.

Sorry I have been away from this thread for awhile, I started a new job and got sick at the same time.

Took the 629 to the range with some 240 grain LSWC loads that I worked up for it and it loves 7.5 grains of 231.

I also shot the Speer 200 grain Gold Dot Short Barrel factory loads in .44 Special and Magnum as well as Factory Federal 240 grain JSP's. The revolver was a pleasure to fire with all of them and did not get really sporty until I fired the full power Federal JSP's.

Here are the results at 15 yards, some rapid double action. I used to test at 25 yards. But the older eyes are not up to that anymore. The revolver probably shots better than this, but its what I can do.

Nice! Another load you might try is 5.5gr 231 under X-Treme 240 plated bullets. I use this load in magnum cases and it is a delight to shoot.

Thanks for the tip 9mm!

Ill give that load a try. I already have some of their 200 grain plated. Ill get some of their 240's as well.

I wish they made a full plated SWC in .44 like their 158 plated SWC for .38/.357. My J and K Frames in .38/.357 love em!

Another good load is the same powder and charge weight with powder coated 240swc's. A friend of mine in Mississippi lives a couple miles from a guy who does powder coating and he sent 500 of the 44's to try and they are excellent with no leading but they do smell funny when fired.

I have been eyeing powdercoated bullets. Interesting new tech for our sport. Just have not been able to bring myself to buy any yet.

I want to find a red powdercoated .38 LRN so I can make a dummy bullet like the one on the .38 Special album cover LOL.
