Talk me out of this one.
I picked up a 24-3 with a 6.5" barrel and patridge front sight a few years ago. It is a good tight revolver but it looks like it rode in a soft case under some stump jumper's pickup seat. A lot of scratches all over it. Not a collector piece at all.
I'm considering sending it off and having it cut down to a 5" length and possibly putting a ramp sight on board. Opinions? No 'smiths around here so a recommendation would be appreciated as well.

Why not a 3" snub, if you are gonna cut the barrel?
And keep the Patridge sight.

I have in excess of 1 dozen S&W revolvers. Only one has the Patridge sight, a model 14 with the barrel cut to 4" by the Los Angeles Police Department and it is my, all time, favorite. Please shoot the patridge sight under varying light conditions before you scrap it.

That's what I would do if I didn't already have a M27 converted to a 5" .44 Special. Mine also has a ramp front sight.
Look at post # 10 in this thread:
model 28-2 in 44 special

Or you could look for a factory 4" 24 barrel and do a barrel swap

Just so you know what it looks like here is my 24-3 5" barrel (with the Baughman ramp site). Sorry, I bought it this way locally so I can't recommend a Smith smith.

You asked to be talked out of it: don't do it. Refinish it, but keep the original configuration.

Hmmm...6.5 inch with patridge vs. 5 inch with ramp. Both really cool configurations. I wonder how I'd feel if I saw them side by side for sale. I do exclusively target / range shooting so the patridge and the longer barrel appeal to me. And it IS the original. That carries some weight with me.

I took it out and shot it last night after I posted. That Patridge sight is pretty easy on my aging eyes. Already have a Lew Horton 24-3 so no need for a belly gun configuration. Might just leave it as is. Not very pretty but it does shoot well.

I can understand your wanting something a little shortable. A while back I purchased a 2nd model 44 HE. Fully intending to swap out it's 5in barrel with a 4in 24-3 I had. That's when the trouble started. I took it out and shot it. The long tube balanced REALLY well and the longer sights made hits a little easier. It's what I call a perfect relaxing gun. Give your 6.5 a try, you might REALLY like it.

For me, that would be a tough call.
I have a 6.5" 24-3. Its a great shooter and I wouldn't even consider cutting it. But then, its in excellent condition.
OTOH, the 5" is my favorite barrel length in a N-frame and I would really love to have a 24-3 in that length.
If I had one that needed refinishing anyway, I'd be sorely tempted to cut it. But, I'd also insist that it be done right. I'm thinking Hamilton Bowen here. It wouldn't be cheap and heaven only knows what the wait time would be as he's a very busy man.
I dunno man. Glad I'm not the one who has to make the decision.

First what's your intended purpose for it. If I was gonna conceal it I'd go with 3 inch. If not. I'd have it refinished and shoot it. If it's a woods/truck gun maybe just leave it as is. It all depends on what you want it to do. in the end it's your choice. I don't sell any of my guns so resale doesn't matter much to me. But once it's cut. You can't put it back to original. Maybe buy a different barrel. Hmm. Hard choice ain't it.

I would have it shortened to 5" and keep the partridge sight. Refinish and some Culina "Cokes" in the wood of your choice.

The finish is scratched up now. It's no longer "original." Refinish it and it won't be "original", either. That boat has left the dock.
These are mass-produced tools, not sacred religious icons. Do what you think will make you happy.
I have an extra 6-1/2 inch Model 624 I bought with the intentions of having it cut to 5 inches. It's a great idea. I just never get around to finding people to do my projects. I just checked, and I bought the extra 624 in 2003. Good thing my house isn't on fire...
In passing, Hamilton Bowen no longer does any work on Smith & Wessons.

Sounds like you like it pretty well as is except the finish - Have a professional refinish on it.
