Default Gentlemen, show me your 586's with custom wood grips....

I have a very nice 586 4" with some funky rubber grips (from Italy no less )which have been altered and I want to put some nice quality wood grips on this piece. The rest of the gun is in VERY nice shape so would like to improve upon it. Something along the Roper style or similar is the direction i'm looking for, but a good variety would also be helpful. I know you guys have some fine 586's so i'd like to see them for ideas. Thanks for your time!!
Jim

Jim,
Is your 586 a no dash square butt?
Also you probably know the L frames use the same grips as the K frames.

IMO Herrets makes a very nice smooth presenatation grip with medallions for the money,
They make them for both K/L frames and N frame models ,
I have bought several pair like these on Models 629 MG, 686 MG, 19 Nickel,
They are excellent and wont break the bank either at $38 NIB from CDNN.

The two below are pre 24 and pre 27 N frames,

Ok, here is a M586, with cocobolo wood from Kurac. They are "coke" style stocks that fit my hand very well.

Here's another 586 wearing Kurac's grips. They feel as good as they look.

My 586-4 came with hideous rubber Hogue grips. I installed a set of S&W Combat stocks which originally came on my 617 no dash. Gun shoots as good as it looks.

i was just thinking today about a set of custom grips for my 586, no dash, that i recently inherited from dad. as of right now it is the box with maybe 25 rounds through it. for the grips, i was thinking of curly(tiger) maple. there is a long story behind why curly maple. i am also thinking about doing a curly maple stock on my(another one of dad's guns) remington xp 100. dad is no longer with us, but i think he would be on board with these changes. does any one know of anybody who would make a set of grips and a stock for these personal treasures?

also, how would i go about finding the "birthday" of my 586?

thanks...
tim

Palmetto Sharpshooter,
Are those Hogues on the engraved gun? They look nice and slim and I like the checkering. Thanks,

These are the original stocks that came on my 586 project magnum. It was a 6" no dash with a bubba trigger job and a lot of finish wear. Every sharp edge on the stocks had been rounded over and the speedloader cut out had been buggered up. I fixed the terrible push off with a new trigger and then I sent the gun off to the factory for the recall work. I had them do some custom work while it was there, putting on a 4" tube and bead blasting with fresh blue. While it was away I took the round over job on the stocks to the extreme. I was going for a J frame target look. I also re-cut the lines on the speedloader cut out and gave them a tung oil finish.

Yes sir. They're Hogues. Zia at Hogue is making a knockout set for that revolver right now. I should have them in the fall.

Smith357,
I have saved that picture of the reshaped grips as I think they are PERFECTLY redone and shaped! All the contours very well done and pleasing to the eye. I'll bet she feels great in the hand also!!

Palmetto Sharpshooter,
Thanks for the information. Send me a picture to my private message option or post a picture of the ones Zia is building for you. That would be appreciated!!
Thanks all,
Jim

Yes the grips fill the hand and spread the recoil for the stoutest magnum loads, and the rounded butt does not print like stock Targets.

I've seen this picture before and wondered about those grips. I had no idea you reworked them. Wonderful job!

Here is mine along with its understudy in .22 caliber with some smooth rosewood stocks from a Thai ebay seller. I used some Birchwood Casey Brass Black on the screws and escutcheons after the photo was taken.

Although not a 586, I have a 686-6 Plus that I have Nill Rosewood grips on. These grips have a large/wide palm swell which helps me with accuracy. These grips cover the back strap and lengthen out the distance to the trigger. I would only recommend them for people with medium to large hands if you are accustomed to shooting DA.

Also, they are not cheap!

Could you post a link to where you got them? I can't find them on Hogue’s site.

Unfortunately I don't believe that Ebony wood is available any longer. It's a shame too, they make a fine looking set of grips.

Ahrends Retro combat or Retro Target in the exotic wood (not laminated plywood ) of your choice. Ebony is no longer available for S&W grips ( can get 1911's) many other woods to choose from.
Order a set and have him make just what you want , nothing like a custom made set of grips.
I don't have a 586 but the model 58 in my avatar has Ahrends Retro Combats in dark red cocobolo. I specified that color and he nailed it ! The man knows how to shape them so they fit your hand .....they are SWEET!

Wow! Great 586s!

I have a problem...my hands wear Large-XL gloves, but standard S & W K and L frame grips are too large for my hands. I got a beautiful pair of Cocobolo (supposedly Herrett's) from eBay, and I had to sand them down to be comfortable in my hands.

Hogue black rubber grips are very comfortable, fit great, and I shoot better with them, but...they are...ug...Uhmm...utilitarian-looking!

I'd like to try some wood Hogues, and I guess I could always reduce them in size, should they be too large. Or, Maybe Altamont grips.

Default Smooth Grips vs Checkered

Back in the early 80's, when I was a young officer, we still
carried revolvers. My weapon of choice was a S&W Model 19, with a 4" barrel.

I had replaced the checkered factory grips with a set of smooth S&W grips in what was advertised as "Goncalo Alves". They were beautiful, and looked very nice in the "Bianchi Judge" holster I wore at the time.

One early morning, my Sergeant and I responded to a burglary in progress. I had the model 19 in my hand as we made entry to the building, and we could hear the two burglars talking to each other as we entered.

My hands were sweating so profusely that I couldn't hold on to the gun. We wound up arresting the two burglars, and after my shift that night I went to the local gun store and purchased a set of Pachmayr rubber grips and never looked back.

While smooth grips may look better, in an OMG situation, I'll take something with checkering every time!

Hey, no fair! Those aren't 586's. (But they they sure are sporting some fine looking grips).

Here are a couple of round butt 586's. I really like the round to square butt Ahrend's red stained maple grips on the 6" barrel gun so much I think I will get another set for the 4" gun.

The two below are pre 24 and pre 27 N frames,
I love your grips and immediately went to the CDNN website. All they have for Smith revolvers is one set of repro walnut target stocks. Am I missing something? Thanks for the great pictures

Default Looking for a nickle 357 586 model

If anyone knows someone or some place I could purchase a 357 magnum 586 model nickle polish with wood grips please let me know. I use to own one and it was stolen years ago back in 1995. I really miss that gun. I liked everything about it and would love to purchase another one at a reasonable price. I appreciate if someone can give me some info on someone who may be selling one . Thanks

It's been a while, but I have bought 5 or six of those Herret's grips from CDNN and have been very happy them. I think their availability at CDNN may come and go.

I resisted the 586 for years. I finally gave in to the Siren's call not long ago with a 586-8.

The grips I suppose are Altamont.

I still haven't shot it.
