Default Nice 44spl 696 no Dash

On Monday I took a 2.5 drive north to the Dallas TX area to look at 3 x 3" S&W 44 caliber revolvers but only one returned home in my possession.

The 2 that didn't were stated to be Lew Horton 624 and Lew Horton 29-3.A quick message to ERMinotatlewhortondotcom revealed that both were not from LH.They were identical to the LH but they were end of run guns that S&W shipped to other distributors when LH didn't accept the remainder.Prices were a bit too high with no box/papers/tools.

A Model 696 no dash, product code 103132 shipped on the 318th day of 1996 was the one that returned home with me.I swapped out he rubber grips for a pair of factory K/L RB Combats

Today it went to the range and was all I hoped it would be.

I love these interesting stories about acquiring, some of the S&W gems out there. Very interesting about identifying the original "Lew Horton" guns. The site is a great source of information, and I enjoy the history behind these revolvers.

Enjoy that 41 mag!

Great choice choosing the Special. I have a dash 1 and is a fine shooter. Also, just because the other two were supposed to be Lew Hortons doesn't warrant a higher price tag.

Easy to pick out a seasoned, knowledgeable handgunner. He comes home with a gun like the 696. Beautiful gun in what looks like 1st class condition. Unlike many Forum members, though, I love rubber grips. Even have them on my toaster...

A+ on the grip swap, A++ on the acquisition. I've become a very big fan of round butt combats. Thanks for sharing pics

At the indoor range yesterday I had the chance to try a few different grips and shoot 50 rounds of 240gr hard cast SWC over 4.4gr of Trail Boss in Starline cases using Federal LP primers.

The shot groupings were a to the right at 7_10 yards that will get adjusted next range trip

K/L frame factory RB checkered target grips
K/L frame RB Safariland grips
K/L frame mid 1950s NOS RB magnas
K/L frame Hogue rubber.

When I asked Lew Horton about a 3" 29-3 serial # ALB61xx and a 3" 624 #ALU10xx both with LH style wood combat grips the reply was:

Hello Bob!

ALB61xx and ALU10xx did not come through Lew Horton’s …

Those models were our exclusives for some time. Towards the end of the runs, S&W sold some to other distributors. Your guns are apparently some of those.

That's a 696 in the meme.

Great score!

I drove to Bakersfield from S.F. to get mine. 5 hour drive and I had to make it twice. Once to buy it and do paperwork, once more to pick it up after 10 day wait.

Though I have 2 "LH" 624's, there's nothing special about them over a non LH imo, and I certainly would not and did not pay a premium for either.

I am not too crazy about those 5 shot .44 Specials unless they are very light and small, as in Charter Arms. I have the M-624 with a 4" barrel and think the 5 shot S&W's kind silly

Great score on the 696 StakeOut! Its one of my grail guns.

I just purchased a 629-1 that was advertised as a Lew Horton because of the serial prefix. A call to Earl at LH and I was told that it was not one of their guns. Annnnnnd I don't care. Love it anyway.

How about very light, not so small, and butt ugly? However, you can wear it all day and hardly know it is there. But plenty of snake shot when needed not to mention the effectiveness of the 44 Special standard loads. And you can shoot it a few times without it falling apart, unlike certain other small 44 Specials. If five rounds won't get it done, another one likely won't finish it either. Good luck.

There's another 3" 29-3 on gunbroker right now and listed as a Lew Horton which it is not after an inquiry to LH about the serial number supplied by the seller.I informed the seller it is not an LH but he declined to change the auction listing.
