shot my new 638 today
Got my new 638-3 about a week ago & finally got to the range. Shot some light loads, 2.8 grain bullseye with 158 grain RNlead. It shot to point of aim at 7 yards & I could group it pretty well single action. Double action was all on the target but not as good grouping which I'm sure was me with new gun. Recoil was a little snappy but manageable. Only thing I don't like is my little finger hangs below the grips & can't get all three fingers on the grips Anybody know of good grips still concealable for someone with bigger hands?

Try Eagle secret service grips. I wear XL gloves and they give me good grip.
Love the look of the smooth ebony the 642 or nickel 38.

Shooting with a dangling pinkie is easy to learn and with practice, it will serve you well. The middle two fingers of your strong hand are all that is needed to control most handguns. If you are using a two hand hold, the majority of hand pressure should come from your support hand.

With the boot-type grip already on the 638, the pinky is folded beneath the butt of the grip to provide support, as though the grip is "standing" on the little finger. As to another grip, S&W makes a 3-finger style lightweight rubber grip which is available on their website. Congrats on your 638, one of my favorites.

Congratulations on the 638! As the other guys have said, with a little practice, I have come to prefer boot grips on my j frames!
