A steal unless it has some evidence of a serious issue.

Nice find and a good price...
It would take much, much more than $595 for me to give up this 686-3. I bought it new back in 1989ish and if I recall correctly it was priced in the mid-to-low $300s.

The price is fair to great depending on the condition. Look for signs of deterioration under the rubber grips. Period correct target stocks are easy to find. They are not numbered anyway.

Just bought a S&W 686-4 in a 4" tube six shooter today. Clean and solid for $649. Do buy it and have fun.

Even if they are not your preferred, the missing original Target stocks represent $50 to $100 in missing value.

You can get a replacement wood stock from the S&W website for about $60.. I replaced my original checkered version with a non-checkered. Looks great!

A couple of weeks ago I "picked up" a 640-1 and while on the way home, I got a call that they had just gotten a 686 no dash 6" in (just as I left) and that if I was interested they'd give me a good price (yes it helps for the LGS guys to know that you are ALWAYS looking for, and interested in pre-lock S&W's!)
Now, I'm not the biggest fan of 6" handguns, but I did not have a 6" pre-lock 686 (well, at THAT time anyway), so of course I turned around and went back.
So, for $500 OTD, I got a great 6" no dash 686!
Sorry, I can't find any pictures of it right now.

They are great guns. You should check the frame behind the yoke where the s/n is stamped, see if there is an "M" stamp acknowledging if it has had the recall done. S&W still honors the recall at their cost.

I'm going around 1pm today to check it out. I thought the 686-3 did not need the M recall stamp? I'll check for it either way. Sadly its a estate sale so the price is firm, the estate owner told the gun store handling it he will not budge on any price. I think I'm going to go for it.

Just paid for it, no M stamp by the serial number. Had the original box and paperwork, just missing the grips.

Recall was for no dash, and some -1's. You are good! Congratulations! Bob
