Default Anybody seen one of these 686 sets.

Got a guy posting the below pic locally. Says it's from the S&W Custom Shop (huh!). A 686 with three barrels as a set. Looks like he's trying to implicate that the set has barrels that can be changed out like the well known Dan Wesson three barrel pistol pack set. Sorry for the bad pic but it's all I've got currently. Anybody ever seen one of these so called sets. I'm thinking not but thought I'd throw it out here. Thanks for any information.

It was in a wooden box and looked like it had tools?

I only recently ran into a model 29 version of this at an LGS for a hair over a grand......looked like a Dan wesson with all the barrels.

I could be wrong, but I really doubt it was ever offered that way from S&W. the Dan Wesson sets had a method for headspacing the barrels, s&w doesn't really set there guns up to be "adjusted" or swapped out by the end user. Of course it could be done if each barrel were individually fitted to that frame..... and maybe this guy had them all fitted so they could be swapped in and out. But I'd be willing to go out on a limb here and say that isn't a factory set. There just isn't a practical way for the average person to adjust for wear over the long haul, not without buying some somewhat uncommon tools for the average shooter.

I could see gun nuts, or s&w nuts having a set like this, heck, this seller might even be a member here.... but s&w has to think if the legal implications of an average person with no skills trying to swap barrels at home... ain't gonna happen. No way would they offer this set in my opinion.

Since on a Smith of this era the attachment of the barrel to the frame is a "crush fit", there is a finite number of times you can screw on the barrel..... and expect it to stay on.

I don't think S&W would ever sell such a set. Not unless the attachment method was totally redesign (which would be very expensive and they would never do for a single tiny run).

Yes, He says it's in wooden presentation box. I don't know what the goodies are in the little plastic bag yet but I'm working on finding out. I'm still of the opinion its a hodge podge set of a gun and a couple of found extra barrels put together to look pretty. Been trying to find out his price but the owner has currently gone silent due to the skepticism of authenticity. Thanks for everybody's response so far.

I saw a presentation box with a mod 29. It had a 6" barrel on the gun. Then below it, a 5" and a 4"(?) At a local LGS for $1200. The box I saw looked like it had tools. One of them looked like a little black wrench.

I didn't know what it was. The box looked like it had grooves in it for the barrels. I was under the impression- the Dan wesson's only had interchangeable barrels. And I wasn't in the market for one sooooooo I didn't bite. But I still wondered.

I'm now assuming it's a revolver someone had different barrels for and made up a presentation box for. So, how much would it have been. Maybe $1100 depending on the dash (no lock btw) and 160-170 per barrel? Again just guessing...

Attractive but doubt it is factory. I would value it at the gun (6" 686) plus the barrels and case, perhaps $1000 total.

That was not offered by the factory. As stated above, it is impractical per the enginering of that gun. The barrels are worth about $100 a piece if in good condition, and the case probably about the same. If I were buying that, I would value the gun as a normal 6" 686 of its era, and value the extras 40ish% below what I have mentioned, so I get some money for my time I took to sell them off.

Could get very expensive taking it to a real gunsmith every month or so and having the different barrels installed, head spaced and then having to re-sight in

Never appealed to me when Dan Wesson offered it legitimately...

It's not OEM. Smith & Wesson revolvers do not feature a "barrel swap" feature. Barrel changes are a professional pistolsmith type of modification.

I would like to see someone at a range try and switch out barrels. Probably not going to happen outside of a gunsmith shop. Ask the seller for a model or part number for the kit.
I am guessing seller thought he could sell it to someone that doesn't know about S&W or basically about any guns for that matter. I have heard of fake boxes but this is a first for a fake S&W factory gun kit. But I am no expert so what do I know?
