oh! and the 460 is 45 caliber

Your XP100 is a single shoot shot barrel rifle not a revolver in a strait wall handgun cartridge.

Many rifle calibers chambered in these but they should not be confused with handgun cartridges.

Which cartridge do you have getting that velocity out of 7.5" of barrel?

Slap a 200 grain bullet in that cartridge and get back to us on that velocity.

No I know you're not trying to push me off the .500. It does seem like the .460 is a more logical step up over the .44 mag thanks to the caliber choices. It does have a lot going for it & would be able to take any game you'd want to bag basically. I do know that if it were a .460 first & I loved it I'd want to pick up the .500 next. Lol. Ahh. So many wheel guns that make me want to open up my wallet.
So with all this info, its hard to make to correct choice. I had the same issue. One thing that no one has talked abot is the "Cool Factor". I have both the 460 and 500 in short barrel configurations and when the clan comes over and has a few cocktail's and we open the safe, They always go for BIG and BLING. Just saying they grab it over and over just to hold it....Hell I do it too>>> Get both. There's no shame

Hahah. This thread & the suggestions have made me want to own both moreso than just one of them. Lol. There's a definite cool factor of the big .500 haha.

Yeah, I fat fingered the key and it should have been 45, not 44, but I stand by the rest as the XP and Thompson's are still handguns, at least according to ATF.

Yes by ATF definition it is a handgun - but you are in a revolver forum.

Still you did not tell use which caliber you are make claim to.

As an aside a 460 SW 7.5" can send a 200 grain bullet 2350 fps (factory Corbon ammo) while a 30-06 cannot make 2150 out of a 26" barrel with same weight bullet.

Would love hear which cartridge you are trying to make a comparison with.

We shoot/have several rifle cartridges chambered here out of TCs, CP1, and Lone Eagles in 223, 308 and 30-06 and don't see the velocities you are claiming. Out of rifles length 16" or longer yes, but not 8" and 10" barrels.

Be safe

Default First Time With My 500 Magnum

Took my new S&W 500 Magnum with 6 inch barrel to the range yesterday. Fired 15 Armscor 300 grain XTP rounds through it at 35 yards. Gives a good kick but I did not find it as bad as I thought it would be. If you are still thinking of one, I would say go for it. I really like mine.

If you should happen to be wondering what the 500 would look like with the lock removed, here you go:

I removed it and used a plug sold by another member here.

Welcome to the Forum. I have shot 2 3/4" to 83/8", I have found that the 4" is the most comfortable to shoot ( less Recoil ) than the longer barrels. The 4 & 2 3/4" are the easiest to carry and provide me with good accuracy @ 50 yds and under with open sights. 350 XTP's shoot very nice out of all of the guns. If you start going to 500 gr- 700 gr your best with 6" or longer, the heavies start to tumble out of the 4 & 2 3/4. If you enjoy the 44 mag, I would believe you would enjoy the 500, and as everyone stated, RELOAD!. Be Safe,

I'll look into those Armscor 300 grain XTP's. Yes definitely still thinking of one. I wish I had a chance to handle the 6 inch BBL model.

4" the most comfortable? That's crazy hahah. I was under the assumption that it would actually kick more than the longer barrels. I guess the extra barrel length leading to more time for the powder to burn means more recoil. Reloading is definitely happening end of the year. The ones I'm interested in most would be the 8.3/8" barrel with compensator & 4 inch compensator. Felt the best & were my favorite aesthetically. It's good to know that you get good accuracy out to 50 yards & less with open sights with the shorter BBL's.

After shooting multiple different length barrels, and discussing it with an ammo manufacturer, it does appear that the longer barrel allows more complete burning of powder and greater recoil. I have not tried to figure out free recoil from any of the revolvers. Enjoy Be Safe,

Exactly why John Ross wanted a different barrel twist from the factory's original, go figure ?

When you shoot the 500 be sure to wear both ear plugs and earmuffs , a good pair . And it's nice to warn the other shooters before unleashing the beast.

My friend you forgot one more thing never shoot any gun without washing your hands after.
George28, if you think that's expensive checkout a model 58( one that S&W couldn't give away in the 1980s) or 27?

Oh absolutely. I should probably double up on ear protection with even my .44, that gets quite loud at indoor ranges Yeah I would most likely warn others first, hoping they wouldn't misconstrue that as me trying to show off or something.
