Default My new IPSC adventure: 627 PC

Hi guys,

Just wanted to share.
After a long wait on import and export licenses, I finally got to pick up my new Smith & Wesson 627 Performance Center.
Had to drive to Germany (from the Netherlands) to get it, but it was definitely worth it! (I know... it's about 500 miles in total, there and back again... that's nothing in US terms... hahaha)

I got it Sunday 1,5 weeks ago and shot my first IPSC match in revo division with it last Sunday... so only with dry fire practice! hahahaha! and I managed to end up second place! (out of a total of four revo shooters for this match, that is.. )

I had no issues with the revolver at all. Timing was perfect on all charge holes, cylinder gap was good, trigger was real smooth, no strange marks or unfinished surfices... the only thing was that I had to chamfer the charge holes, but I was expecting that....
Anyways... very happy again, with another beautiful Smith & Wesson revolver.

Wow nice!!!

How did you go about chamfering the charge holes yourself?

Thanks Bob!

Well, as I didn't have the time to bring it over to a smith, I decided to grow a pair and do it myself with a Dremel tool!
I used a very narrow cylindrical grinding stone and took it really really slow.... It turned out to be quite easy actually! I chamfered the complete cylinder hole, approximately twice the width of case thickness. And I chamfered the ejector. After I was finished I took some polishing paste and inserted a polishing wheel in the Dremel tool, and made it all look pretty.
Below is a pic of the result, (without the ejector)

Thanks!

Really happy it worked, because I really dreaded this little job...

But the way the cylinder comes from factory, it is not usable for competition. It took me seconds to wiggle / wrestle in a TK .025 clip, even with .38 short colts with roll crimp!!
The outside of the holes and the center is chamfered, but the 'sides' and below the ejector are really sharp! Which of course is needed if you still want to load single rounds instead of using clips.
But I will be using clips exclusively. (tested with single round and they still work fine by the way).

Now I can throw a clip in the general direction of the cylinder and it will eat it up as if there's a vacuum!! hahahaha!

Beautiful gun a great upgrades. Love those grips. Looking to get some Nills for my Korth Mongoose. Hate the Hogues. BTW nice dremel job! I wouldn't have the "nads" to try that. Good for you.

Awesome grips, and I bet they help tremendously with pointing, aiming, and shooting. After all, Nill grips have been designed exclusively for shooters and competition use.

I have a pair of Nill combat grips on my snubby Python. At first consideration, one will wonder what it is about Nills that make them so expensive. However, once you buy a pair, you will see why they are expensive. Some of the best quality I've seen in wood grips, especially modern ones.

thanks guys!

and yes, once you see these Nill grips in real life... beautiful!
and you select the size which fits your hand... it's such an immense difference with 'normal' grips... the control is so much better! and the support hand now has so much more contact due to the pinky shelf at the bottom.... it makes follow up shots so much easier! It is also much easier to grab the gun in the same spot every time.
My next IPSC match will be Sunday the 13th and can't wait!

Thumbs up

Very nice gun and stocks. Have you thought about a fiber optic front sight? I use red or green front with an LPA rear(which I really like). I shot steel match this week with a Deltapoint Pro(7.5 dot) on my 627 and it worked very well.

Are all ranges in Netherlands under ground? What do you use for hearing protection?

Hi Bob,

Before I got this 627 I was thinking about getting a fiberoptic front sight, but I'm actually quite okay with the golden bead front sight.
I do want to replace the rear sight though... and I'm going to get the hammer bobbed and 'skeletonized' in november. Need to take it one step at a time cause all of this ain't cheap!

And yes, almost all ranges in the Netherlands are indoors. A handful have an 'outdoor' part, but not like with you guys.
Just concrete walls and wooden protetion preventing us from shooting over the walls.

I use regular ear muffs, but most use the active- ear muffs

Just did the slightest bit of d.i.y. tuning to my 627, but I'm so happy with it, I just have to share....

The rear sight notch bothered me from the beginning due to the fact that it's so narrow and shallow... for IPSC i just couldn't get a fast sight picture.. I could have bought a thinner front sight or another wider rear sight, spent quite some money and ofcourse wait a long time...
But I've decided to take a small 'diamond file' and open up the rear sight to 0.2 inch and deepen it as far as possible.
Such a little thing to do, but I'm so happy with it... picking up the front sight is so much faster now...

Congrats and great work on your part. I’ve shot my 627 in USPSA (IPSC in the US) and now am having an additional cylinder fitted chambered for 9x23 to enable shooting 9 Luger, 38 super & 9x23. Can’t wait to get my hands on it
