I am looking for some info for a 57 from some members that know more than I do.
Can you tell me date of manufacture, I think it says "target stock" but would have to know the date to get the correct grips right? And if this is a special run of production or standard model offered.

I looked on the internet but I could not find anything that started in this serial range and, to be honest, I got lost in the web...

A few questions:

What's the dash number?

Is the gun in a blue plastic case, or a one-piece cardboard box?

A 2-letter serial number is very uncommon. 99.99% of modern era Smiths will start with 3-letters (then 4-numbers). There are rare exceptions, but are you sure on that s/n?

I think I figured it out to be 1986
Serial number AJP000(X) and its a -1. One Piece Cardboard box. I guess the "Spec Ord" (6168) is the date? 6= 1986 and the last three numbers I have heard it is either day and month or days into the year..

I'd like to know what the target grips are like for an 86 if that is the year. The grips were replaced for some unknown reason because the gun is in perfect condition. I have heard that the new grips from Smith and Wesson are thinner than previous years and I would like to get a close match if I can.

Yep, the 168th day of 1986.
The stocks would be Goncalo Alves target stocks with speedloader cutout and silver washers. Try a want to buy ad here on the forum some one can probably hook you up with a set.

Can you imagine there is someone who works in the Smith and Wesson plant that knows exactly how many days we are into the year, everyday...

It's called a Julian calendar. It gives you the number of the day for every day in the year

Ha. I just meant as it being something you really don't think about on a regular basis. Who uses a Julian Calendar but Orthodox Russians and Smith and Wesson? I will now look for one to hang in my office, Thank you.
